Full accounting adds the 52nd and 53rd contracts, a practice squad of up to 16 at $247,500 to $411,300 a man, and dead money on the released. Those total $9,842,532 to $10,825,332 on the modelling here, putting the number between $57,230,166 and $58,212,966. It goes wrong if the club carries a cheaper practice squad than modelled, if it clears more salary than dead money in the cuts, or if Over The Cap has not switched conventions by that date.

Spotrac and Over The Cap still state Trent Williams' 2026 cap number more than $2,000,000 apart on September 15, 2026. The take is WRONG at $2,000,000 or below.

The take is WRONG if a row naming Victor Dimukeje appears on any tab in that window, whatever its classification string. It is CORRECT if no such row has appeared by then.

Filed the morning the settlement was two-sourced and the wire was silent on a read paged to exhaustion. The 49ers reached an injury settlement with Dimukeje on September 3, per 49ers Webzone's Site Staff citing the NFL transaction report and per Spotrac's own transactions feed, which reads 'SEP 03, 2026, Victor Dimukeje, OLB, Released by San Francisco 49ers'. Spotrac dropped him from its injured-reserve table and Over The Cap has not, so the two books' injured-reserve totals now differ by exactly his $565,000. The case FOR: this beat's taxonomy holds that the wire records waived-injured reverts and not direct injured-reserve placements from the active roster, and Patrick Taylor Jr., an identical case, settled on August 28 and never drew a wire row of any kind in ten days of checking. Dimukeje's own August 27 placement never appeared either. The case AGAINST: two settlements in this same camp did produce wire rows the next day, Bradley King on August 8 and K.J. Henry on August 19, both of whom reached injured reserve as waived-injured reverts. That class distinction has been tested exactly once. Priced at -175, an implied 63.6 percent, which is a lean and not a lock. Today's read was complete rather than bounded: signings five pages and 123 rows with the cursor exhausted, waivers three pages and 69 rows exhausted, reserve-list 18 rows on one page with no cursor, and terminations, trades and other each returning the site's own 'NO TRANSACTIONS AVAILABLE'.

Connor Colby is the 49ers' starting left guard in the Week 1 game against the Los Angeles Rams on 2026-09-10. Scored off the official starting lineup for that game: Colby listed at left guard is a hit, any other player listed at left guard is a miss, including if Colby is unavailable through injury.

Made in the Camp Battles left guard primer. The basis is incumbency plus the calendar: Colby took all of the first-team left guard reps at the opening practice (Wagoner, ESPN, Jul 26), has roughly 450 snaps in this offense from six starts as a rookie, and Robert Jones has none while coming off a 2025 season lost to a neck injury. The call is genuinely at risk, and the falsifier is named in the piece: Jones opening the August 13 preseason game against Tennessee with the starters. Hurley's Niners Nation board already has Jones starting and Colby at backup right guard.

On 2026-09-10, at least three of the wide receivers on San Francisco's active roster are men the 49ers' own roster page lists at age 30 or older. Method, fixed in advance: read 49ers.com/team/players-roster on 2026-09-10, count the players listed at position WR on the active roster, and use the age the club's page states for each. Players on injured reserve, the practice squad or any reserve list do not count.

The room on 2026-08-01 lists five receivers at 30 or older by the club's own page: Mike Evans (32), Demarcus Robinson (31), Deebo Samuel Sr. (30), Trenton Irwin (30) and Malik Turner (30). Evans and Samuel are effectively decided, so this call turns on whether a third veteran holds a spot over Jacob Cowing, Jordan Watkins or De'Zhaun Stribling. It is not a formality in either direction: the 49ers spent the 33rd pick and two roster spots on receivers under 26, and the honest case against my own call is that Robinson, Irwin and Turner are all special-teams and depth arguments rather than offensive ones. This grades the piece's thesis, that a room built to answer a durability history with age keeps having to answer it with more age.

Deebo Samuel Sr. is credited with at least one kickoff return for the 49ers in their Week 1 game against the Los Angeles Rams on 2026-09-10. Method, fixed in advance: the kickoff return column of the NFL's official gamebook for that game. Punt returns do not count. A return credited to any other player does not count.

The case for it is the contract San Francisco just wrote: a $250,000 incentive for a top-ten kick return average, doubling with a playoff berth, on a minimum of twenty returns per Maiocco. A club does not price a job it does not intend to hand out, and Jennifer Lee Chan had Samuel taking a turn returning kicks in his first practice back on August 1. The case against it is real and it is why this is a call rather than a formality. The club's own Day 6 recap names four other men in the return competition, all of them for punts, and names no kick returner at all. Twenty returns is a season-long threshold that says nothing about the opener. And a thirty-year-old receiver signed to take 68 percent of the offensive snaps is an odd choice to expose on kickoffs in the first game, particularly one played in Australia off a long flight.

Connor Colby is listed as San Francisco's starting left guard in the official starting lineup of the 49ers' Week 1 game against the Los Angeles Rams on 2026-09-10. If Robert Jones, Carver Willis, Brett Toth or anybody else starts there, the take is scored wrong.

Filed on the day the reporting went the other way, which is the point of filing it today. David Lombardi had Robert Jones taking the first-team left guard reps at the August 5 practice, the first published rep at the position since July 26. Chris Foerster's own explanation for it was that the staff wanted to keep moving Colby around, including at right guard, and that Carver Willis in concussion protocol and an undisclosed injury to Brett Toth limited that plan. So the alignment was a consequence of two absences rather than a decision about Colby, and the only unforced statement anybody has made about this competition is still Foerster's from the opening Sunday, when Colby took all the first-team reps and nobody had done anything to beat him out. What would make me wrong: Jones holding the first-team reps once Willis and Toth are back.

Corliss Waitman is the San Francisco 49ers' punter in Week 1 of the 2026 regular season. The take is CORRECT if he is on the active roster and is the club's punter for that game. It is WRONG if any other player punts for San Francisco in Week 1, and it is WRONG if Waitman is waived, released, traded, or placed on a reserve list before it.

San Francisco waived Jack Bouwmeester on August 12, twenty-five days after signing him, which left Waitman as the only punter among the 88 names on the club's active roster table, counted in a browser that afternoon. That is the whole case for the call and it is a thin one on purpose: the club did not say it had decided anything, no coach spoke on the day of the move because Wednesday was a walk-through with no media availability, and no punt-by-punt accounting of the competition turned up in the club recaps or beat reports opened here. The case AGAINST it is the same release that produced it. A club willing to build a punter competition on July 18 and end it on August 12 is a club that will sign another punter, and the same release moved players at five different positions in one afternoon. Eighteen days of camp and three preseason games sit between this call and Week 1, and a bad night at Levi's Stadium is the cheapest possible reason to make a phone call.

In San Francisco's Week 1 game against the Rams on September 10, 2026, Jack Jones plays MORE defensive snaps than Nate Hobbs. A player absent from the game book's Playtime Percentage page counts as zero, whether he is inactive, on injured reserve, or no longer on the roster. The take is CORRECT only if Jones's defensive snap count is strictly greater than Hobbs's. It is WRONG if Hobbs's is equal to or greater than Jones's, and that includes the case where both are zero.

The board moved both men today, Jones from 5 to 7 and inside the projected 53 and Hobbs from 6 to 5 and outside it, off the August 20 game book. This call takes the same view forward to a game that counts rather than restating the roster projection. The case: Jones has played 37 preseason snaps across the two games, was credited with two of San Francisco's seven passes defensed at the Chargers with no other 49er credited with more than one, and played 91.5 percent of Miami's defensive snaps across all 17 games in 2025 per Over The Cap's participation table. Hobbs has played none, pulled a groin at the August 11 joint practice with Tennessee, and was given a few weeks by Kyle Shanahan on August 13, which lands between August 27 and September 3 against a roster deadline of August 30. The risk is real and is stated: a few weeks from August 13 clears a September 10 kickoff, so a healthy Hobbs is a corner San Francisco signed to play and Jones is a corner it signed in June. Renardo Green's hamstring, under imaging on August 21, can move this in either direction by changing how many corners dress at all. UPDATED August 22, 2026, by the beat sweep: the anchor agrees, independently and afterwards. Matt Maiocco's 53-man projection 3.0, published August 21, lists a cornerback six of Lenoir, Green, Stout, Jack Jones, Luter and Prysock and does not mention Nate Hobbs anywhere in the piece, writing that Jones 'is slotted to take over as the starter for as long as Green is out.' The desk moved both men at 3:20 p.m. PT on August 21 off the game book and Maiocco published the same day, so this is corroboration and not the source. The two pass breakups are now three-sourced: the game book's defensive column, PFF's charting (team-best coverage grade of 89.9, no catch allowed on two targets), and Kyle Shanahan. The falsifier now has dates: the club published a Raiders-week schedule with practices on August 22 at 1:50 p.m. PT, August 23 at 10:15 a.m. and August 25 at 10:15 a.m., all with media availability, so any Hobbs practice report has three scheduled chances before the August 30 cutdown. Renardo Green's imaging result was promised for Friday August 21 and had still not been published by anybody as of Saturday morning.

George Kittle plays at least one offensive snap in at least one of the 49ers' FIRST FOUR regular-season games of 2026 (the Rams in Melbourne on September 10, then Miami, Arizona and Denver). Zero offensive snaps across all four grades this WRONG.

Method, fixed in advance: the Playtime Percentage page of the official NFL game book for each of the four games; a player absent from it counts as zero. This is deliberately NOT the open Week 1 call, which asks only about Melbourne. These two can split: missing the opener and playing Miami scores the Week 1 call correct and this one correct at the same time. The four games named here are exactly the four a reserve/PUP designation would have cost him, and the 49ers gave that designation up on August 23 rather than keep it. This take says the club was right about its own player.

Jon Weeks is on the San Francisco 49ers' ACTIVE roster, not its practice squad, for the Week 1 game against the Los Angeles Rams on September 10, 2026. The take is WRONG if he appears in that game as a standard practice-squad elevation rather than as an active-roster player, WRONG if a different long snapper is on the active roster in his place, and WRONG if he is not with the organisation at all. This is a claim about which list he is on, not about whether he plays.

As of August 31 the club's own roster page carries no long snapper on the active roster and lists Weeks among thirteen players on the practice squad. A club may elevate two practice-squad players per game and may elevate any one player no more than three times in a season, and a fourth appearance requires an active-roster signing, so an elevation-only arrangement cannot cover a seventeen-game season. San Francisco also announced Monday that it re-signed punter Corliss Waitman to the active roster while leaving Weeks off it, which is the asymmetry this call is about. The club flies to Australia on September 2.

Jarrett Patterson is NOT San Francisco's starting left guard in its Week 1 game against the Los Angeles Rams on September 10, 2026. The take is CORRECT if the official game book's lineup card names anybody other than Patterson at left guard, and WRONG if it names Patterson there.

Deliberately not a restatement of any open row. The existing Patterson row (source: the-49ers-released-robert-jones-and-traded-for-a-lineman-seven-minutes-later, resolve 2026-09-11) asks whether he plays ONE offensive snap; this asks whether he STARTS at one position. The two live Colby rows (four-men-at-left-guard and the-injury-list-picked-wednesdays-left-guard) call Colby the starter and are Dan's to grade, not mine to re-file or reverse. The call: Patterson arrived on a 2027 seventh-round pick, practised with the club for the first time this week, and Shanahan said on August 31 he wants to see where he fits at guard AND centre. He is the most experienced lineman in the competition at 21 career starts against Colby's 6 and Willis's none, which is why this is a call rather than a formality, and the club's own 08/27 depth chart does not list him anywhere.

The club announced shortly before the flight that he would stay behind with a foot injury and DECLINED to rule him out, listing him questionable for Week 1 instead, and Pro Football Talk's Michael David Smith reported that he may fly to Melbourne separately if the foot responds to treatment (September 3). That refusal is the whole reason this is a call and not a formality: the club had the option to rule him out and did not take it, and there are six days plus a scheduled Monday-to-Wednesday practice block between the announcement and kickoff. Against that: a club does not leave a man 7,855 miles behind when it expects him to play, the flight is over fifteen hours each way, and San Francisco is thin enough at the position that it hosted a defensive tackle on a visit the day before it left and signed two defensive linemen to its practice squad the day before that. Priced at -190, an implied 65.5 percent, which is a lean short of the floor rather than a lock. This collides with no open row: the ledger's only other Week 1 defensive-line call is a snap-share call on Nick Bosa, and nothing on it asks anything about Okuayinonu.

Filed off the club's own Week 1 injury report, read live on Thursday morning Pacific at 49ers.com and again at therams.com, which render the same grid. Kittle is listed at tight end, limited on every practice day the grid carries a value for, and his Game Status box is empty, which under the league's rules is the club saying it expects him to play. So this is deliberately NOT an availability call. It is the question the empty box refuses to answer. FOR: he tore an Achilles tendon on January 11, per 49ers.com, and he is 32, per the club's own roster page; he has not taken a competitive snap since the tear; the club limited him at every game-week session rather than clearing him to full; and Kyle Shanahan, asked about Bosa and Kittle together, said 'We've got to be smart with that. They both look great but we've definitely got to be smart with that,' which is a coach describing a snap plan he declines to name. AGAINST, and it is real: an empty designation box is a strong signal, Kittle started all eleven games he played last season per the club's roster page, and San Francisco's tight end room behind him is thin enough that a low share costs the offense something. Priced at -155, an implied 60.8 percent, which is a lean and not a lock. Collision check run against the live ledger: the only open Kittle row is a season-long receiving-yards call (under 700, source every-under-is-a-man-coming-off-a-lost-season) and this asks nothing about receiving production; the only open Week 1 snap-share row is a Nick Bosa call, a different player; and the two open right-defensive-tackle rows ask about Halton, West and Okuayinonu. Nothing on the ledger asks about Kittle's Week 1 usage.

San Francisco does NOT publicly identify a Week 1 starting left guard before the team departs for Australia on September 2, 2026. Public identification means either a 49ers coach naming the starter on the record at a media availability, or the club publishing an official depth chart that lists one man first at left guard. If either happens on or before the end of September 2 Pacific time, this is WRONG. If neither has happened, this is RIGHT.

Kyle Shanahan said after the preseason finale that the coaches would have a good idea by Monday and then declined to commit to saying it out loud: 'I don't know if we'll say it then with our opening game.' The roster is cut on Sunday and only two practices and a half fall between the finale and the flight. Carver Willis started the last two preseason games at left guard and PFF's published grades put him last among the offensive linemen in the second of them, which gives the club a reason to keep weighing rather than announce. This call is about WHETHER they say it, not about WHO it is: two open rows on this ledger already claim Connor Colby starts at left guard in Week 1, and this row does not contradict them.

Jalen Stroman is on the San Francisco 49ers' practice squad as the club first publishes it after the August 30, 2026 cutdown. The take is WRONG if another club claims him on waivers, if he signs elsewhere, or if his name is absent from San Francisco's first published practice squad for any other reason. Being on the initial 53 instead would also grade this WRONG. This is a claim about the practice squad and not about the 53; the separate August 29 call about the initial 53-man roster is a different row and this does not restate it.

Matt Maiocco reported the waiver at 2:18 p.m. PT on August 30 and reported that the plan is a practice-squad return if Stroman clears. A plan is not an outcome: San Francisco claims 27th of 32 in the waiver order, so any of twenty-six clubs can take him first. Stroman played all 66 defensive snaps and a team-high 21 special-teams snaps at Las Vegas on August 27, off the official game book, which is the record another club would be claiming on.

At least two of the four players placed on active/PUP on July 25, 2026 (George Kittle, Mykel Williams, Alfred Collins, Isaac Guerendo) are on the reserve/PUP list when the 49ers set their 53-man roster on August 30, 2026.

Black is a rookie running back whose Wednesday workload increased because Jordan James fractured a rib, which is the most fragile possible reason to be getting reps. If James is back before cut day the reps go with him. Against the call: the 49ers carried McCaffrey plus a thin room behind him, and a back who has taken first-team-adjacent work in camp is usually kept over a body they would have to teach. This resolves in 32 days and it is genuinely close.

Kion Smith is NOT on the San Francisco 49ers' initial 53-man roster as announced by the club on 2026-08-30. If he is on that roster, the take is scored wrong. Being waived and re-signed to the practice squad does not count as being on the initial 53; the scoring document is the club's announced initial 53-man roster and nothing else.

Filed the morning he signed, at 11:38am, roughly two hours after the club announced it. Smith is 27, has two career starts in five seasons, and both came last year. San Francisco signed him off the street in the second week of camp on a day its interior was short three bodies: Carver Willis in concussion protocol, Brett Toth with an undisclosed injury, Nick Zakelj having left Wednesday's practice with an elbow. That reads as a purchase of practice reps. No timeline has been published on any of the three, so the honest way for this to be wrong is those injuries proving worse than anyone has said, rather than Smith beating somebody out. That is a real path and not a token hedge, which is why the call is worth making.

Gracen Halton is on the San Francisco 49ers' initial 53-man roster as announced by the club on 2026-08-30. If he is not on that roster, the take is scored wrong. A practice-squad signing after a waiver does not count.

Filed the day his grade on this site's 53-man projection went 6 to 7. He is a rookie fifth-round-tier interior lineman who missed roughly a week of camp with a knee bone bruise that never got a published timeline, which is the case against him. The case for it is Thursday: a second straight practice back, and Nick Wagoner writing that Halton has been a dominant force in pass rush drills, productive in team drills, and has shown the most juice of any interior pass rusher on the roster other than Osa Odighizuwa, who is graded 10 here. The room is the other half. San Francisco has cut or waived five defensive linemen since July 26 and signed five more, and the veteran it added most recently, Ogbo Okoronkwo, is 31 and played one game in 2025. The honest way to be wrong is another injury or the club adding a veteran edge, both of which are live.

Demarcus Robinson is on the San Francisco 49ers' initial 53-man roster on 2026-08-30. The take is WRONG if he is waived, released, traded, or placed on any reserve list that removes him from the initial 53, and it is WRONG if he reaches the initial 53 only by way of a practice squad agreement. It is CORRECT only if he is on the active 53 the club submits.

The club's first unofficial depth chart, released on the morning of August 11 ahead of the preseason opener, lists Robinson at a starting receiver spot. The caveat is the club's own and it is why this is a call rather than a certainty: the communications staff compiles that chart and the coaching staff does not typically review it before it goes out, per David Bonilla at 49ers Webzone. The supporting evidence is attendance. Ricky Pearsall is on injured reserve for the season, Mike Evans suited up for the Tennessee joint practice and did not compete, Christian Kirk had not practised a single session of camp as of August 5, and De'Zhaun Stribling missed three sessions with a hamstring; Grant Cohn, at the August 11 practice, writes that Robinson has not missed a day and had him making two catches in the end zone. Kyle Posey and Rohan Chakravarthi at Niners Nation, the same morning, wrote that the debate a few weeks ago was whether Robinson would make the roster at all and that injuries have made him a lock. The case AGAINST it: everything above is a health story, San Francisco keeps six receivers on this projection, and three of the men ahead of him get healthy between now and August 30. A veteran whose case is built on other people's injuries is the first name squeezed when those injuries end.

Brett Toth is NOT on San Francisco's initial 53-man roster after the August 30, 2026 cutdown. The take is CORRECT if his name is absent from the club's published initial 53, including the cases where he is waived, released, waived/injured, placed on injured reserve, or reaches an injury settlement. It is WRONG if the club's published initial 53 contains his name, whatever his health designation.

This takes the other side of the two most-read local projections, which is the reason to file it. Matt Maiocco (NBC Sports Bay Area, August 14) keeps ten offensive linemen and has Toth eighth. David Lombardi (The San Francisco Standard, August 16) keeps nine and also has Toth in. This board dropped him from 7 to 6 and outside on August 8, when the club disclosed a concussion, and has left the tenth offensive line spot vacant rather than fill it with him. The case for the call: no published account has placed Toth at a practice since August 5, fourteen days; Cam Inman counted five concussed 49ers on August 18 and wrote all of them remain sidelined except Carver Willis; there is no published clearance, and a protocol has a step the club does not control. The club has added an offensive lineman twice this month (Doug Kramer Jr. on August 10, Nick Zakelj back on August 17) rather than wait on him, and the club lists Zakelj as a tackle. What makes it wrong, in order of likelihood: Toth clears in the next several days and plays at Las Vegas on August 27, which is enough for a staff that liked him before the injury; or the club keeps him on the 53 and moves him to injured reserve afterwards, which requires him on the initial 53 first and would score this WRONG on its own terms; or Vederian Lowe's high ankle sprain forces the club to carry an extra body it would otherwise cut. This call is about the initial 53 only and predicts nothing about his season. UPDATED August 22, 2026, by the beat sweep: Maiocco's projection 3.0, published August 21, cuts his offensive line from ten men to nine and still carries Toth. The room shrank by one and he survived it, which tightens the adverse reading on this call without turning it. This row was filed against Maiocco having Toth in, so the anchor holding that position is not new information about his view; the smaller denominator is. No published account has placed Toth at a practice since August 5, and the club has now scheduled three practices with media availability before the deadline, on August 22, 23 and 25.

Nick Martin is on the San Francisco 49ers' initial 53-man roster announced at the August 30, 2026 cutdown. The take is WRONG if he is waived, released, traded, or placed on injured reserve or reserve/PUP before that roster is submitted, and WRONG if his name is absent from it for any other reason.

Kyle Shanahan put Martin in the injured-reserve conversation on August 25 by way of Matt Maiocco, alongside Christian Kirk and Vederian Lowe, and San Francisco traded for a seventh linebacker the same morning. Both cut against him. The call is that neither is enough: a player moved to injured reserve during the 90-to-53 cut is finished for the season, so the useful version of an IR start requires making the 53 first, and Martin played 33 defensive snaps at the Chargers on August 20, more than any other San Francisco linebacker in that game. He hurt the hamstring late in it and no timeline has been published. This board moved him from a seven to a six on August 26 and kept him inside the projection, and this take is that projection made falsifiable. It is deliberately not a duplicate of the open Deion Jones, Kaelon Black, Brett Toth, Demarcus Robinson or Gracen Halton initial-53 rows: different man, different room, and it can be right while any of those is wrong.

Between 2026-08-11 and 2026-08-29 inclusive, EVERY San Francisco 49ers addition to the 90-man roster is announced together with at least one corresponding subtraction in the same club announcement. The pattern this grades is five for five in August: August 1 (signed Samuel, placed Pearsall on IR), August 2 (signed Herbert and Leo, waived Apple, waived/injured Kamara), August 5 (signed Hodge and Okoronkwo, waived Givens and Sample), August 6 (signed Kion Smith, waived Dowell), August 10 (signed Kramer, released Zakelj). Ten additions against ten subtractions across five entries, read off the club's log Monday afternoon. The club stated the mechanism itself on August 10: 'In order to make room on the roster, the team released OL Nick Zakelj.' The case AGAINST the take, which is the reason it is worth filing rather than a formality: banking room on a separate date is legal, ordinary and specifically likely here. A club that places a man on injured reserve on a Tuesday can sign a replacement on a Thursday with no subtraction attached, and the preseason opener against Tennessee on August 13 is exactly the event that generates the injury to do it with. A single such split across nineteen days breaks this, and nineteen days is a long time to hold a perfect record on a 90-man roster in the back half of camp.

In San Francisco's preseason finale at Las Vegas on August 27, 2026, Nick Zakelj plays MORE offensive snaps than Carver Willis. A player absent from the game book's Playtime Percentage page counts as zero, whether he is inactive, injured, or no longer on the roster. The take is CORRECT only if Zakelj's offensive snap count is strictly greater than Willis's. It is WRONG if Willis's is equal to or greater than Zakelj's, and that includes the case where both are zero.

The case, all of it public. At the Chargers on August 20 Willis started at left guard and played 42 offensive snaps, and PFF made him the lowest-graded of the eleven San Francisco offensive linemen it charted; Zakelj played 38 at the same position and graded second among every lineman in the game, either team, behind only Brandon Parker (Bonilla, 49ers Webzone, and Aponte, Niners Nation, both August 21). Zakelj was released August 10 and re-signed August 17, and the club's own roster page still did not carry him at a browser check on August 22, six days on. Kyle Shanahan's post-game list of the men battling at left guard named Carver Willis, Robert Jones and Connor Colby; Kirk Larrabee added Austen Pleasants; none of the three lists names Zakelj. This call says the reps follow the tape rather than the list. THE CONFOUND, NAMED IN ADVANCE: if the club has already settled on Willis as the Week 1 starter it may rest him in a meaningless finale and play Zakelj all night, which wins this take for a reason opposite to its argument. It is still scored as written, because a take that gets to reinterpret its own result is not a take. THE OTHER FAILURE MODE: Robert Jones (calf) or Dominick Puni (concussion protocol) returning could take snaps from both men and compress the comparison, and Willis starting a half while Zakelj plays a quarter loses this outright.

None of the three defensive backs San Francisco worked out on August 14, 2026, Bryce Hall, Troy Pride Jr. and Corey Mayfield Jr., signs with the 49ers on or before August 20, 2026. The take is CORRECT if the club's transaction log carries no signing of any of the three by the end of August 20. It is WRONG if any one of them is signed in that window, whatever the corresponding move is.

The case for it is Saturday. Two of the three secondary injuries that produced the tryouts, Jack Jones with a hand and Marques Sigle with an oblique, were in uniform at the August 15 practice two days after leaving the opener, and Bonilla writes that Jones appears to have avoided a setback. The roster is at 90 chargeable players against a limit of 90, counted table by table on August 15, so signing any of the three costs a man already in the building his job. A club that has a corner back on the field does not usually pay that price. The case against is Nate Hobbs, the one of the three injured defensive backs with a stated timeline on him, a few weeks per Kyle Shanahan, and the Chargers game on August 20 is a game San Francisco has to field a secondary for. A second injury in the group on August 15 or at Tuesday's joint practice in Los Angeles would very likely make this wrong on its own.

Alfred Collins is listed among San Francisco's defensive starters in the official game book for the August 20, 2026 preseason game at the Los Angeles Chargers. The take is CORRECT if the game book's defensive starting lineup contains his name. It is WRONG if it does not, including the case where San Francisco rests him or he does not appear in the game at all. The no-show risk is mine and it is stated here rather than argued afterwards.

The club's plan, as reported by David Bonilla at 49ers Webzone on August 6, is that Collins lines up alongside Osa Odighizuwa. He was activated off the active/PUP list at the end of July after offseason shoulder surgery and got a bigger workload in team drills on August 5 with Odighizuwa sidelined, per Bonilla the same day. The interior room behind him is thin: Mykel Williams on PUP with an ACL, Mikail Kamara and K.J. Henry on injured reserve, Gracen Halton out Sunday with an ankle and C.J. West shaken up in the same session. A club in that condition that intends to start a man in Week 1 gives him first-unit work in the second preseason game. What would make it wrong, in order of likelihood: San Francisco sits its projected starters a second straight week, having sat most of them against Tennessee, and Klay Kubiak said on August 16 that the staff was still deciding how to approach this game; or the shoulder is managed more conservatively than the practice reports suggest; or the club opens with a different interior pair and brings Collins in on rotation. This call deliberately does not predict how he plays, only whether the club treats him as the starter it has said he is.

Carver Willis is listed as San Francisco's starting LEFT guard in the official game book for the August 20, 2026 preseason game at the Los Angeles Chargers. The take is CORRECT if the game book's starting offensive line has Willis at left guard. It is WRONG if it names Connor Colby, Robert Jones or anybody else there, and WRONG if Willis does not appear in the game at all. The no-show risk is mine and it is stated here rather than argued afterwards.

The case is Tuesday's joint practice at El Segundo, the last session before the game. Cam Inman, at the session for Bay Area News Group, has Willis taking the first-team left guard reps while Robert Jones filled in at right guard for Dominick Puni, who is in the concussion protocol; Kyle Posey reads the same alignment off the practice video and writes that Jones may no longer be locked in at left guard. Kyle Shanahan's own answer is the argument against it and it is quoted rather than hidden: "It's still a competition. No one's really completely made it easy on us yet," and he put the decision about two weeks out, which is after the roster is set on August 30. Connor Colby carries the same grade as Willis on this board and held first-team left guard rotation reps as recently as August 15, so this is a call and not a formality. What makes it worth making now is that Shanahan said a number of starters will play Thursday, unlike last week, so the first-team line is expected on the field and the game book will say who it was.

Robert Jones, not Connor Colby, takes the first offensive snap at left guard for the San Francisco 49ers in their preseason opener against the Tennessee Titans on 2026-08-13. Scored off the official game book's starting offensive lineup, with the first-drive participation reported by the beat as the second source. The take is WRONG if Colby, Carver Willis, Brett Toth or anyone else opens the game at left guard, and it is WRONG if Jones opens the game at any position other than left guard. If San Francisco does not play the game on August 13, the take voids rather than scores.

The evidence for it is reps rather than words. Robert Jones has worked with the first-team offensive line at left guard in every published session since August 5, when David Lombardi reported the switch, and on Monday he did it again while Connor Colby took second-team RIGHT guard, which three separate accounts carry with no disagreement (Bonilla at 49ers Webzone, Posey at Niners Nation, Cohn at Sports Illustrated, all August 10). The case AGAINST it, and it is the reason this is a call and not a formality: offensive coordinator Klay Kubiak said the same afternoon that the job is 'definitely still an open competition,' that both men will compete all camp and play in the preseason 'a lot,' and that putting Colby in first was 'no slight on Connor.' A club that means that has one obvious way to show it, which is to start Colby in the game where nothing counts and let the tape decide. A preseason opener is also the cheapest possible place to give a seventh-round pick the first-team look back.

Xavier Thomas takes at least one snap for the San Francisco 49ers against Tennessee on August 13, 2026. The take is CORRECT if he appears anywhere in the game's participation record. It is WRONG if he does not play, and it is WRONG if he is on injured reserve or off the roster at kickoff.

This is a call against one of the two public books and for the club's own page. San Francisco's roster page carried Thomas on its Active table at 2:58pm PT on game day, at 6-2, defensive line, with the number column empty. Spotrac carried him on injured reserve at 3:00pm PT. The club's transaction log had nothing after the August 12 signing, and no report of an injury for him surfaced in a search that afternoon, which is the whole case for the call. The case AGAINST it is that a database does not usually invent an injured-reserve designation out of nothing, and that a defensive lineman signed twenty-six hours before kickoff with no jersey number issued is a plausible scratch for reasons that have nothing to do with health. Kyle Shanahan said after Tuesday's joint practice that there would not be many starters playing, which is the reason a man in Thomas's position would ordinarily be on the field for most of the night.

San Francisco signs at least one of Doug Kramer, Joe Michalski or Lecitus Smith to its 90-man roster on or before 2026-08-12. Scored off the club's own transaction log at 49ers.com, with ESPN's 49ers transaction log as the second feed. A practice-squad agreement does not count, because there is no practice squad until after the August 30 cutdown; the claim is a signing to the active 90.

The three worked out for the club on Friday, August 7, per David Bonilla at 49ers Webzone off the NFL's daily transaction report, posted about 2:47pm PT. The case for: four times since July 28, San Francisco has worked out a group and signed a man out of it, and none of the four took longer than three days. Edge defenders July 28, Henry and Bell on the 29th; receivers July 29, Irwin on the 31st; running backs July 30, Herbert on August 2; edge rushers August 2, Okoronkwo on the 5th. The interior is short four of its sixteen linemen and all three of the men in the building are centers. The case against, stated because it is real: most NFL tryouts produce nothing, the club already answered this position group by signing Kion Smith on August 6, the roster sits at 90 of 90 so any signing costs a name, and Carver Willis and Brett Toth could both practice Saturday and end the need. If the club signs an interior lineman who is NOT one of these three, this take is wrong, and it is written that way on purpose.

On or before 2026-08-09, San Francisco signs at least one more defensive lineman or edge rusher who is not on its roster as of 2026-08-02. Method, fixed in advance: read the official transaction log at 49ers.com on 2026-08-09 and count signings at position DL or LB of any player absent from the roster page counted on 2026-08-02. Practice-squad signings do not count, because there is no practice squad until after the August 30 cutdown. A player re-signed after being waived counts.

San Francisco has signed four defensive linemen since July 26 (Kevin Givens on the 26th, Quinton Bell and K.J. Henry on the 29th, Titus Leo on August 2), worked out three edge rushers on August 2 alone (Ogbonnia Okoronkwo, Andre Carter, Xavier Thomas, per Marc Adams off the league transaction wire), and goes into this week with Mykel Williams on PUP, Keion White on an adductor, Romello Height on an elbow and Mikail Kamara waived. The honest case against my own call is that Leo IS the answer to Kamara and the workouts were due diligence the club runs every week; three workouts is also a small number to hang a signing on, and clubs sitting exactly on the 90-man limit have to waive somebody healthy to sign anybody, which is a real brake and cost Eli Apple his job on Sunday. I am calling it anyway because the pattern is four signings in eight days at one position group and the group got thinner, not deeper, over the weekend.
