San Francisco will sign a kicker on Saturday, and it has not worked one out

Eddy Piñeiro missed a third straight practice on Friday with an illness and is questionable for the home opener. He is the only kicker on the roster. Kyle Shanahan said two candidates are under consideration and would not name either one.

Every call on this site goes on a public ledger and gets graded. The misses stay up.
Eddy Piñeiro photographed from the chest up against a plain white background, smiling into the camera, short dark hair, wearing a red 49ers jersey with white and red striped sleeve trim and the NFL shield at the collar. A posed league headshot, not football action.

Eddy Piñeiro did not practise on Friday. He did not practise on Wednesday or Thursday either, and the 49ers listed him questionable for Sunday's home opener against Miami.

San Francisco has nobody else who kicks. The club's own roster page at 2:49pm on Friday carried one kicker on the active roster and no kicker anywhere else: not on the practice squad, not on either reserve list.

Kyle Shanahan, speaking to reporters after Friday's practice, said the club will bring one in. Asked whether he knew who it would be, he said: "I don't. There's two guys we're deciding on. I'm not sure which one." The words are off the transcript the club's own communications staff put out after the session.

David Bonilla of 49ers Webzone reported the same afternoon that the signing goes to the practice squad on Saturday. A practice-squad kicker reaches Sunday's field by standard elevation, which is the route San Francisco used for KhaDarel Hodge and Ogbo Okoronkwo before the Melbourne game on September 10.

The club has not worked out a kicker.

Maiocco reported Friday that through that day the 49ers had not brought a kicker in to try out. The five men San Francisco did work out this week were tight ends Lawrence Cager, Tanner Conner and Jack Stoll, and defensive tackles Daniel Ekuale and Larry Ogunjobi, off the NFL transaction report by way of Bonilla on September 15. The club signed Stoll to the practice squad the following day.

Shanahan, on when the illness started: "He's missed Wednesday, Thursday, and today. I don't know if it came on Tuesday or Wednesday morning, but he's missed the whole week because of it."

What the club would be replacing, off the official game book.

Piñeiro went 2 for 3 on field goals in Melbourne. He made 20 and he made 56. His 52-yard attempt in the fourth quarter hit the right upright. He was 3 for 3 on extra points and he kicked off six times, and his nine points are a third of a 27-7 win.

He also played 12 of San Francisco's 20 special-teams snaps, which is more than Jon Weeks or Corliss Waitman, who played eight apiece. Weeks snapped and Waitman held on all three field-goal attempts. Neither one is on the injury report.

Kaelon Black is the other questionable.

Black was limited on Thursday with a groin, and limited again on Friday. Maiocco had him on the field for the start of Friday's session. Shanahan said on Thursday that the club was being careful: "I think we're just being smart with him. He was a little tight today." Asked on Friday how optimistic he was that the rookie plays, Shanahan said, "A questionable amount of optimism," and the room laughed.

Black played 28 of 65 offensive snaps in Melbourne, second among running backs behind Christian McCaffrey's 36. Separately, the club listed him with an adductor injury in August and had him out from Day 6 of training camp until Day 14 on August 18, per its own camp report. Two problems in the same region six weeks apart. Somebody put exactly that to Shanahan on Friday, and he did not join them up: asked whether it was the same groin injury Black had dealt with earlier in the season, he said, "I didn't ask him."

If Black cannot play, the active roster holds one other healthy running back. Jordan James was on the Not Active list in Melbourne, per page one of the league's game book, and took no snaps. Sincere McCormick is on the practice squad.

Stribling is the only 49er ruled out, and he is still on the active roster.

De'Zhaun Stribling had ankle surgery on Wednesday, Maiocco reported, and Shanahan put the recovery at about ten weeks. He has not practised this week.

He is also still on the club's own Active table, read at 2:49pm on Friday, a third straight day, and the newest entry on the club's transaction log is still September 16. Kyle Posey of Niners Nation wrote Friday that until the injured-reserve move is filed the club has to declare him out, and that the move is expected Saturday.

Nine men practised in full.

Twelve names are on the report and only three carry a designation. Nick Bosa is the one who moved across the week: he did not participate Wednesday under a rested-player note that also lists a knee, was limited Thursday, and was full on Friday with no game status. Dre Greenlaw, McCaffrey and Trent Williams, rested alongside him Wednesday, have been full both days since.

Kyle Juszczyk with a finger, George Kittle with an Achilles and Keion White with a back were limited on Wednesday and limited again on Thursday. All three were full on Friday. Khalid Kareem and Upton Stout were full as well.

Miami filed three.

The Dolphins ruled out linebackers Ronnie Harrison, hamstring, and Chop Robinson, concussion. Robinson was limited on Wednesday and did not practise on Thursday or Friday. Long snapper Tucker Addington is questionable with a shoulder.

San Francisco has told everybody what Saturday holds. It has named nobody in it.

The 49ers rested four veterans Wednesday, and three were full a day later

San Francisco filed its first official Week 2 injury report this week, and eleven 49ers were on it. Six did not practise Wednesday and four of those six were rest days: Nick Bosa, Dre Greenlaw, Christian McCaffrey and Trent Williams. By Thursday, Greenlaw, McCaffrey and Williams were full participants and Bosa was limited. The two men who have not practised either day are Eddy Piñeiro, who is ill, and De'Zhaun Stribling, whose ankle needed surgery. Kaelon Black joined the report Thursday with a groin. Every man on Thursday's report played against the Rams in Melbourne.

Week 1 Takeaways

San Francisco Stopped The Rams On Fourth And One At Its Own 1, Then Drove 99 Yards

The 49ers opened 1-0 with a 27-7 win over the Rams at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, Thursday evening in the Bay Area and Friday morning in Australia. Los Angeles reached the San Francisco 1 in the third quarter and turned the ball over on downs; San Francisco answered with an 11-play, 99-yard touchdown drive. Connor Colby started at left guard and the whole line played every snap, George Kittle played 30 of 65 in his return, Kaelon Black carried more often than Christian McCaffrey, and De'Zhaun Stribling started at receiver without being thrown to. Nine takeaways off the official game book.

Connor Colby And Kaelon Black Fill The Two Jobs Shanahan Called Fluid

San Francisco's public depth chart carried an empty box at left guard from August 27 until this week. Read at 2:52 p.m. Pacific on Sunday, it is stamped 09/4/26 and lists Connor Colby first at left guard and Carver Willis second. It also lists Kaelon Black second at running back ahead of Jordan James, which is the other job Kyle Shanahan called fluid on August 31, and George Kittle and Nick Bosa as starters. Colby was the incumbent in July, was passed by Robert Jones and then by Willis in August, and is first again on the club's own page. Jarrett Patterson, traded for to compete at guard, is listed second at center. The chart predates three roster moves and has one empty box left, at long snapper. The first Melbourne practice is Sunday at 7:50 p.m. Pacific.

Stribling is out ten weeks, and the club says it doesn't need another receiver

Kyle Shanahan spoke before Wednesday's practice, his first availability since the flight home from Melbourne, and answered the two questions the opener left open. De'Zhaun Stribling had ankle surgery and will miss close to ten weeks, a window that covers nine games. Jake Tonges had knee surgery, is out for the season and went on injured reserve Wednesday. KhaDarel Hodge was promoted to the 53-man roster in the same transaction and Jack Stoll signed to the practice squad, one day after the club worked him out. Shanahan said San Francisco does not need to add a receiver. Stribling was still on the club's Active table at 4:53 p.m. Pacific.

De'Zhaun Stribling Is Out At Least A Month, And Injured Reserve Would Cost At Most One Game More

De'Zhaun Stribling has a deltoid sprain in his ankle and is out at least a month, Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reported Sunday morning; the rookie is still seeking opinions and may need surgery, though none is planned. San Francisco has filed nothing: read at 4:50 p.m. Pacific Sunday, the club's transaction log still ends on September 10 and Stribling is still on the Active table. The reported month rules him out of Miami on September 20, Arizona on September 27 and Denver on October 4 whether he goes on injured reserve or not. The four-game minimum that comes with the designation adds at most one more, October 11 at Lumen Field, and Christian Kirk becomes eligible to return from injured reserve for that same game. The first club document that has to say anything is Wednesday's injury report; Nick Avila of NBC Sports Bay Area reported that the players do not practise until then. Behind Stribling the active roster carries Mike Evans, Demarcus Robinson, Deebo Samuel, Jacob Cowing and Jordan Watkins, and Watkins was inactive in Melbourne. One take filed, priced at -120.

The Right Denominator For De'Zhaun Stribling's First Game Is Twenty-Six, Not Sixty-Five

De'Zhaun Stribling, the wide receiver San Francisco took with the 33rd pick in April, was hurt in his first professional game and the 49ers have published nothing about him since. The official participation report has him at 21 offensive snaps of 65, which is 32 percent. Counted against the 26 plays from scrimmage San Francisco ran before the snap he was injured on, it is 21 of 26, or 81 percent. The count reconciles to 65 at the end of the game once the second-quarter roughing-the-passer penalty is included, which is the check on it. He was not targeted on any of the 21. Six 49ers receivers took an offensive snap in Melbourne: Mike Evans 49, Demarcus Robinson 41, Deebo Samuel 27, Stribling 21, Jacob Cowing 5 and KhaDarel Hodge 1. Tight end Luke Farrell played 46, more than every receiver but Evans, and fullback Kyle Juszczyk played 33, more than Samuel. Four of the five other receivers who played are 30 or older. Kyle Shanahan said after the game that the Achilles was checked and intact and that the club was not sure of the magnitude of the ankle injury; further testing waited on the flight home, which David Bonilla of 49ers Webzone clocked at 13 hours 46 minutes, landing at SFO at 3:06 p.m. Friday. San Francisco's next game is Miami at Levi's Stadium on Sunday, September 20, at 1:25 p.m. Pacific, and the 49ers traded down twice in April, first with Miami, to reach the pick they spent on Stribling. No take filed.

Kaelon Black is on the San Francisco 49ers' initial 53-man roster as announced at the August 30, 2026 mandatory cut. Scored off the initial 53 only: the practice squad is a miss, a later signing or elevation after the initial roster is a miss, and being placed on injured reserve from the initial 53 counts as a hit.

Black is a rookie running back whose Wednesday workload increased because Jordan James fractured a rib, which is the most fragile possible reason to be getting reps. If James is back before cut day the reps go with him. Against the call: the 49ers carried McCaffrey plus a thin room behind him, and a back who has taken first-team-adjacent work in camp is usually kept over a body they would have to teach. This resolves in 32 days and it is genuinely close.

San Francisco Promoted A Fourth Tight End And Worked Out Three More

San Francisco promoted tight end Brayden Willis from the practice squad to the active roster on Tuesday morning and signed defensive lineman McKinnley Jackson to the practice squad. The promotion fills the roster spot Alfred Collins vacated on September 10 and puts the active roster back at 53. Hours later the NFL's transaction report showed the club had worked out five players, three of them tight ends. Jake Tonges, who played eight snaps in Melbourne before he was hurt, remains on the active roster with no injury designation and no published imaging result, and the club's Week 2 injury report does not exist yet. Willis has played 23 regular-season games, all with the 49ers, and has no career receptions.

George Kittle Started And Played 30 Snaps. Luke Farrell Did Not Start And Played 46.

The NFL's official game book for Week 1 puts George Kittle at 30 of San Francisco's 65 offensive snaps and 46 percent, Luke Farrell at 46 snaps and 71 percent, and Jake Tonges at eight snaps and 12 percent before he was hurt. Farrell also played 18 of the 49ers' 20 special-teams snaps, the highest special-teams snap share of any San Francisco player in the game. Kittle started; Farrell did not. Shanahan's postgame words on Tonges were an MCL with no timetable, and as of 2:50 p.m. Pacific Monday the club's transaction log still ends on September 10, Tonges is still on the active roster page, and the Week 2 injury report page carries no San Francisco table. The only other tight ends the club employs, Khalil Dinkins and Brayden Willis, are on the practice squad.

The 49ers Announced Every Kyle Shanahan Contract Until This One

The 49ers have a standard sentence for a contract, and they have used it on Nick Bosa, Brandon Aiyuk and Brock Purdy, each time naming the number of years. They have used it on their head coach three times in nine years and never once named the years. This offseason they signed him again and used it not at all. What a club announces is the part of itself it writes on purpose, and this one writes the players.

Dominick Puni Is In Concussion Protocol And The Left Guard Job Is Still Three Deep

Dominick Puni, No. 77, entered the NFL's return-to-play protocol after sustaining a concussion on Saturday, and did not practise Sunday. The left guard competition on the other side of the centre is still three men, and offensive coordinator Klay Kubiak said Sunday that the reps are being divided three ways. No account of Sunday's first-team alignment had published as of a 3:07 p.m. PT check of four sources individually, and the club's own recap, which has landed between 3:40 and 4:09 p.m. all camp, had not appeared. Saturday's documented alignment had Connor Colby and rookie Carver Willis rotating with the first team and Robert Jones limited at second-team right guard. Nick Bosa did side work for the first time since August 3. One grade moved on this site's 53-man projection and nobody crossed the cut line.

A Third-Round Rookie Has The First-Team Edge Reps Opposite Keion White

Romello Height has been working with the first-string defense opposite Keion White while Mykel Williams sits on PUP and Nick Bosa is held back. Height was drafted in the third round to replace a pass rusher who retired in March. White arrived from New England nine months ago for a reported sixth-round pick. Between them they have taken every first-team edge rep of this camp, and neither was supposed to.
