DeForest Buckner says San Francisco was the only place he wanted to go

He spoke Monday for the first time since the trade that brought him back. Houston, meanwhile, signed Naquan Jones, the second defensive tackle to leave the 49ers' practice squad in three days.

Every call on this site goes on a public ledger and gets graded. The misses stay up.
DeForest Buckner, in the 49ers' white road jersey and gold pants, chases Washington running back Adrian Peterson across a wet field at FedExField, other 49ers defenders closing from both sides.

DeForest Buckner spoke to Bay Area reporters Monday, his first availability since the Oct. 28 trade, according to Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area and 49ers Webzone. The Colts asked for his input before the deal, Webzone reported.

"I stated I wanted to come here," Buckner said, per Maiocco. "I didn't want to go anywhere else."

Asked about his contract future, he said, per Webzone: "I'm really just focused on the new opportunity I have here and just taking it one week at a time."

West's number. C.J. West, on injured reserve, gave Buckner the jersey number Buckner wore in his first stint and did not ask for anything back, Maiocco reported. West's new nameplate went up over his locker. "Oh, I'm going to take care of him," Buckner said.

Another tackle gone. Houston signed Naquan Jones to its 53-man roster on Monday, taking him off the 49ers' practice squad. The league's transaction wire lists it as a free-agent signing dated Nov. 2; reports of the deal surfaced Sunday, per 49ers Webzone. On Friday, Indianapolis did the same with Kevin Givens.

San Francisco signed Jones off Minnesota's practice squad to the 53 on Sept. 23, released him on Oct. 20 and signed him back to the practice squad the next day, per the club's releases. He played three games for the 49ers and made two tackles, according to 49ers Webzone. It is his second stint in Houston.

The replacement is a receiver. The club announced Monday that it signed KhaDarel Hodge to the practice squad. He played three games for San Francisco this season, with one catch for 18 yards, before his release on Oct. 1, the day Brandin Cooks was promoted. The club called it a release; 49ers Webzone reported it as an injury settlement.

The count. The club's roster page, read Monday afternoon and counted by name, lists 16 on the practice squad, Isaac Alarcon's international exemption among them, so one regular spot stays open. Three defensive linemen remain there: Viliami Fehoko Jr., McKinnley Jackson and Ogbo Okoronkwo. After Givens signed back on Oct. 27, there were five. Receivers on the squad are now four: Wesley Grimes, Hodge, Will Pauling and Xavier Smith. Dante Pettis is still on practice-squad injured reserve. The active roster is 53 of 53, with 10 defensive linemen, Buckner included.

Stribling. Matt Barrows of The Athletic posted Monday that De'Zhaun Stribling was walking around the open locker room without crutches or any brace on his lower leg, as relayed by 49ers Webzone. Shanahan said on Oct. 26 he hoped for "sometime in December." Stribling had ankle surgery Sept. 16 and remains on injured reserve.

The week. The club's media schedule, as published by 49ers Webzone, had practice Monday at 10:40 a.m., players off Tuesday, then practice Wednesday through Friday, with Shanahan at the podium Wednesday at 12:35 p.m. The first injury report of the week comes Wednesday. Las Vegas visits Levi's Stadium on Sunday at 1:25 p.m.

Still waiting. Demarcus Robinson and West were the two injured-reserve names on Shanahan's Oct. 26 list of players with a chance to return after the bye. The league wire shows no 49ers reserve-list move in November through Monday. Each return needs a spot on a full 53, and the open practice-squad spot is not one either can use.

The trade deadline is Nov. 10 at 1 p.m. Pacific.

Dante Pettis is back because the 49ers have three healthy receivers

Kyle Shanahan said before Wednesday's practice that eight players would not work: Mike Evans (ribs), KhaDarel Hodge (knee), Trent Williams (neck stinger), Dre Greenlaw (quad), Nick Bosa (calf), James Thompson Jr. (ankle), Keion White (hamstring) and Christian McCaffrey (rest). Mykel Williams, back from a torn ACL, and Romello Height, back from hand surgery, were limited. The club signed receiver Dante Pettis to its practice squad.

Deebo Samuel played 76 percent of the snaps and was not targeted once

San Francisco has five wide receivers on its 53-man roster for Sunday against Denver: Mike Evans, Deebo Samuel Sr., KhaDarel Hodge, Jacob Cowing and Jordan Watkins. Evans left the Arizona game with a rib injury that Shanahan called not long-term. Samuel played 41 of 54 offensive snaps on Sunday, Hodge played 30 and has no official target, and Cowing has 46 snaps and no catch this season. Brandin Cooks is on the practice squad and was not elevated for Arizona. Christian Kirk cannot play before Week 5.

KhaDarel Hodge is on the San Francisco 49ers' initial 53-man roster as announced by the club on 2026-08-30, and Ogbo Okoronkwo is not. Both halves must hold. If either name lands the other way, the take is scored wrong.

Filed the day both men signed. Hodge took 72 percent of Atlanta's special teams snaps in 2025 against 10 percent of the offensive snaps, made the Pro Bowl in 2024 as a coverage player, and has 1,698 career special teams snaps against 1,624 on offense; the 49ers' coverage and return units are unsettled enough that the club wrote a return incentive into Deebo Samuel's contract. Okoronkwo is the fifth defensive lineman signed here in ten days, is 31, and played one game in 2025 with no tackles and no sacks, at the position where Alfred Collins has just come off PUP and Mykel Williams is still on it. Snap figures from Pro Football Reference, transactions from the club's own releases.

The 49ers had a deal for Jauan Jennings, and he would not take the call

The 49ers and Vikings had a trade in place for receiver Jauan Jennings, contingent on a call with Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch, Jay Glazer of Fox Sports reported Sunday; Jennings declined and told Minnesota he wanted to stay, ESPN reported. San Francisco has three receivers on injured reserve, a full 53-man roster and nine days to the Nov. 10 deadline.

Greenlaw has drawn league discipline in three of his six games

The NFL fined Dre Greenlaw $12,537 for unnecessary roughness, striking an opponent, after his attempt to punch the ball loose from Drake London landed on London's helmet in the 49ers' loss at Atlanta on Oct. 25. Running back Jordan James was fined $6,194 for unnecessary roughness, use of the helmet, in the same game. Neither play was penalized. It is Greenlaw's second fine of the season after a taunting fine against Denver, and between them he was ejected at Seattle and suspended for the Washington game.

The books have Brock Purdy's MVP place right and his price wrong

DraftKings and Caesars have Brock Purdy at plus 350 to win the MVP, second behind Josh Allen. Kalshi has Purdy at 15 cents bid, 16 asked, third behind Joe Burrow, after one Sunday moved the two quarterbacks about ten cents in opposite directions. Against the exchange's midpoint, a $100 Purdy ticket at plus 350 gives up $30.25, the Allen ticket at DraftKings gives up $17.65 and the Burrow ticket gives up $3.75. The 49ers' Super Bowl price carries no such markup. Purdy has the better case than Burrow and a worse price than either.

Seven Of San Francisco's Nine Rookies Are Listed Second At A Position For The Opener

San Francisco opens the 2026 season against Los Angeles at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Thursday at 5:35 p.m. Pacific, 10:35 a.m. Friday in Melbourne, on Netflix, with radio on KSFO 810 AM and KSAN 107.7 FM. The club's roster page, counted in a browser on Thursday morning, carries 53 active players and exactly nine rookies. Seven of those nine are listed second at a position on the club's own website depth chart, stamped September 8 and labelled unofficial; the other two are listed third. None is listed first. The club's final injury report, published at 12:23 a.m. Pacific Thursday, issued two game designations: DL Alfred Collins out with a knee, which Kyle Shanahan said is a torn patellar tendon that ends his season, and rookie DL James Thompson Jr. questionable with a hamstring. Nick Bosa, knee, and George Kittle, achilles, were limited at all three Melbourne practices and carry no designation. Shanahan on the two of them: 'We've got to be smart with that. They both look great but we've definitely got to be smart with that.' Bosa said he is '100 percent ready to go for the first game.' Luke Gifford, Renardo Green, Dre Greenlaw, Gracen Halton and Romello Height all progressed to full participation at the last practice. Kyle Juszczyk stayed limited with a finger. Los Angeles ruled out Aaron Donald, filed under rest. Inactives land 90 minutes before kickoff. Ten players to watch, and the club's own chart still lists two men who cannot play.

The roster goes to 53 on August 30, ten days after Thursday's game at the Chargers, and one preseason game follows this one. Twelve players are named here with the jersey numbers to find them by, read off the club's official roster page Thursday morning: the left guard rotation, the vacant tenth offensive line spot, a rookie back Shanahan said will most likely play, and a defensive line that was missing three men on Tuesday.

One Of The Ninety Is Listed Two Different Ways

San Francisco signed defensive lineman Xavier Thomas to a one-year deal on August 12. The club's own roster page carried him on its active table on Thursday afternoon with no jersey number published, and Spotrac carried him on injured reserve at the same hour, with no transaction anywhere to explain the difference. The 49ers go into Thursday's preseason opener against Tennessee at exactly 90 chargeable players: 88 on the active table, three on Active/PUP, and one international-pathway exemption that does not count until the cut to 53. K.J. Henry, waived with an injury designation on Wednesday, appears on none of the club's four roster tables. Three of the 88 have no jersey number published, and all three signed on Wednesday. The 53-man projection still totals 52.
