Kyle Juszczyk will miss a few weeks and the 49ers have no other fullback

Brayden Willis, Luke Farrell and George Kittle split his work. Marques Sigle has a high ankle sprain, Upton Stout is day to day with a sprained shoulder joint, and Mykel Williams could be activated for Seattle.

Every call on this site goes on a public ledger and gets graded. The misses stay up.
Brayden Willis, in a red practice jersey with a white 9, carries the ball upfield as Tatum Bethune, in a white 48, closes from the left at a 49ers training camp practice.

Kyle Juszczyk has a hyperextended knee and a bone bruise and will miss "a few weeks," Kyle Shanahan said on his Monday conference call. Marques Sigle has a high ankle sprain and will miss time as well. Upton Stout has a sprained AC joint in his shoulder and is day to day.

All three started Sunday's 24-14 win over Denver. None of them finished it.

Juszczyk, a few weeks. Adam Schefter of ESPN reported earlier Monday that an MRI showed a knee sprain and a bone bruise, and he put the absence at two to three weeks. Shanahan did not put a number on it. Juszczyk was hit on the knee at the end of a 16-yard catch with 14:03 left and was ruled out. He had played 27 of San Francisco's 66 offensive snaps. The 49ers play at Seattle on Sunday, host Washington on Monday, Oct. 19, play at Atlanta on Oct. 25, and then have their bye.

His snaps go to the tight ends. Asked who steps in, and whether Brayden Willis takes over the role, Shanahan answered with three names: "Yeah, Luke and Brayden and Kittle." He called Luke Farrell, Willis and George Kittle "pretty interchangeable," said the injury will "definitely get Brayden some more ops," and added, "Brayden's been ready for this role." Jake Tonges did that work the last couple of years, Shanahan said, and the club lost him in Week 1. Tonges is on injured reserve.

Against Denver, Kittle played 60 offensive snaps, Farrell 29 and Willis 11. Willis also played 22 snaps on special teams. The club's roster page lists one fullback across the 53 and the practice squad, and he is the one with the bone bruise.

Sigle, a high ankle sprain. Shanahan said he will miss time and attached no range. On Sept. 21, when Demarcus Robinson and James Thompson Jr. both had high ankle sprains, he said three weeks at best and up to six. Robinson went on injured reserve five days later. Thompson stayed on the 53 and has not played since.

Sigle was hurt twice on Sunday. He left early in the third quarter with a stinger and came back, per Nick Wagoner of ESPN, then hurt the ankle covering the kickoff with 2:15 left. He played 45 of 66 defensive snaps and made six tackles. Malik Mustapha played 21 snaps, and Wagoner reports that Mustapha takes the starting job beside Ji'Ayir Brown until Sigle is back.

"He did a lot of good stuff last year, but I think he has taken it to another level," Shanahan said of Sigle.

Stout, day to day. "We'll have to manage him through the week to see if we can get him to Sunday," Shanahan said. Stout hurt the shoulder in the third quarter, returned with 2:07 left and went out again. He played 36 of 66 snaps. Shanahan gave two names if Stout cannot play. Ephesians Prysock, inactive against Denver, is a candidate to be activated: "Yeah, definitely." Nate Hobbs, on injured reserve since Aug. 31 with a groin injury, "can be an option too," Shanahan said. "Got to see exactly where his rehab's at. I know he's getting close." Wagoner expects a third arrangement, Deommodore Lenoir in the slot in nickel packages with Jack Jones outside. Jones played 14 defensive snaps against Denver.

Mykel Williams could be up. His practice window from the physically unable to perform list opened last week, and Seattle is the first game he is eligible to play. Shanahan said "hopefully we can get him activated at the end of the week," and then, "it depends how the week goes." Williams did some team drills last week and will again this week, Shanahan said. The 53 is full, so activating him costs somebody a spot. Neither the club's transaction log nor its roster page showed a move on Monday afternoon.

Bosa and Thompson, probably not this week. Shanahan said he is "probably not expecting" Nick Bosa or Thompson back for Seattle. Bosa has not played since Sept. 20 against Miami, the game in which Thompson sprained his ankle. Christian Kirk will not be back at practice this week. "Hopefully next week," Shanahan said.

Evans, no setback. Mike Evans played 39 snaps on Sunday with a rib injury and caught five passes for 76 yards. Shanahan said he had been told of "no setbacks."

The first Week 5 practice report is due Wednesday.

George Kittle Started And Played 30 Snaps. Luke Farrell Did Not Start And Played 46.

The NFL's official game book for Week 1 puts George Kittle at 30 of San Francisco's 65 offensive snaps and 46 percent, Luke Farrell at 46 snaps and 71 percent, and Jake Tonges at eight snaps and 12 percent before he was hurt. Farrell also played 18 of the 49ers' 20 special-teams snaps, the highest special-teams snap share of any San Francisco player in the game. Kittle started; Farrell did not. Shanahan's postgame words on Tonges were an MCL with no timetable, and as of 2:50 p.m. Pacific Monday the club's transaction log still ends on September 10, Tonges is still on the active roster page, and the Week 2 injury report page carries no San Francisco table. The only other tight ends the club employs, Khalil Dinkins and Brayden Willis, are on the practice squad.

The Right Denominator For De'Zhaun Stribling's First Game Is Twenty-Six, Not Sixty-Five

De'Zhaun Stribling, the wide receiver San Francisco took with the 33rd pick in April, was hurt in his first professional game and the 49ers have published nothing about him since. The official participation report has him at 21 offensive snaps of 65, which is 32 percent. Counted against the 26 plays from scrimmage San Francisco ran before the snap he was injured on, it is 21 of 26, or 81 percent. The count reconciles to 65 at the end of the game once the second-quarter roughing-the-passer penalty is included, which is the check on it. He was not targeted on any of the 21. Six 49ers receivers took an offensive snap in Melbourne: Mike Evans 49, Demarcus Robinson 41, Deebo Samuel 27, Stribling 21, Jacob Cowing 5 and KhaDarel Hodge 1. Tight end Luke Farrell played 46, more than every receiver but Evans, and fullback Kyle Juszczyk played 33, more than Samuel. Four of the five other receivers who played are 30 or older. Kyle Shanahan said after the game that the Achilles was checked and intact and that the club was not sure of the magnitude of the ankle injury; further testing waited on the flight home, which David Bonilla of 49ers Webzone clocked at 13 hours 46 minutes, landing at SFO at 3:06 p.m. Friday. San Francisco's next game is Miami at Levi's Stadium on Sunday, September 20, at 1:25 p.m. Pacific, and the 49ers traded down twice in April, first with Miami, to reach the pick they spent on Stribling. No take filed.

Kaelon Black is on the San Francisco 49ers' initial 53-man roster as announced at the August 30, 2026 mandatory cut. Scored off the initial 53 only: the practice squad is a miss, a later signing or elevation after the initial roster is a miss, and being placed on injured reserve from the initial 53 counts as a hit.

Black is a rookie running back whose Wednesday workload increased because Jordan James fractured a rib, which is the most fragile possible reason to be getting reps. If James is back before cut day the reps go with him. Against the call: the 49ers carried McCaffrey plus a thin room behind him, and a back who has taken first-team-adjacent work in camp is usually kept over a body they would have to teach. This resolves in 32 days and it is genuinely close.

Week 4 takeaways: three points in seven drives, then Siran Neal forced a fumble

San Francisco is 4-0 after a 24-14 win over Denver. It was 3-3 at halftime and the 49ers had punted four times, been stopped on fourth down and had a field goal blocked before Siran Neal forced and recovered a fumble on a punt return at the Denver 28. Touchdowns followed on three straight possessions, the last a 56-yard George Kittle catch and run with 2:15 left. Purdy was 19 of 30 for 218 yards and two touchdowns and was not sacked for the fourth straight game. Mike Evans played 39 of 66 snaps with a rib injury and led the team with 76 receiving yards. Kyle Juszczyk (knee), Upton Stout (shoulder) and Marques Sigle (ankle) were hurt, and none has a diagnosis.

Dante Pettis is back because the 49ers have three healthy receivers

Kyle Shanahan said before Wednesday's practice that eight players would not work: Mike Evans (ribs), KhaDarel Hodge (knee), Trent Williams (neck stinger), Dre Greenlaw (quad), Nick Bosa (calf), James Thompson Jr. (ankle), Keion White (hamstring) and Christian McCaffrey (rest). Mykel Williams, back from a torn ACL, and Romello Height, back from hand surgery, were limited. The club signed receiver Dante Pettis to its practice squad.

One Of The Ninety Is Listed Two Different Ways

San Francisco signed defensive lineman Xavier Thomas to a one-year deal on August 12. The club's own roster page carried him on its active table on Thursday afternoon with no jersey number published, and Spotrac carried him on injured reserve at the same hour, with no transaction anywhere to explain the difference. The 49ers go into Thursday's preseason opener against Tennessee at exactly 90 chargeable players: 88 on the active table, three on Active/PUP, and one international-pathway exemption that does not count until the cut to 53. K.J. Henry, waived with an injury designation on Wednesday, appears on none of the club's four roster tables. Three of the 88 have no jersey number published, and all three signed on Wednesday. The 53-man projection still totals 52.

The Injury List Picked Wednesday's Left Guard

The 49ers practiced Wednesday with 18 of their active 90 unavailable and the top five receivers they entered camp with all among them. Robert Jones took the first-team left guard reps, per David Lombardi, and Chris Foerster explained it as a plan to move Connor Colby around that the injuries to Carver Willis and Brett Toth cut short. Brock Purdy went 13 of 14. Two more players left during practice. Nobody who filed on the session reported a kick return by anybody, which is inconvenient for a call this site made Wednesday morning.

Six Grade Changes, Eight Transactions, And Not One Name Has Crossed The Line

The first weekly column off the 53-man tracker. Six days of camp produced six grade changes, four players in and four out, and not one of them changed which 53 men this site projects onto the initial roster. What the confidence grade measures, why Vederian Lowe lost a point without his job being in question, and the count that explains the churn: 87 active players plus four on the physically-unable-to-perform list is 91 bodies, which under either reading of the league limit leaves zero open spots.
