The 49ers never hit Penix, and they gave Atlanta the ball four times

Christian McCaffrey gained 69 yards on the opening drive and 26 after he came back from a thigh injury. Dre Greenlaw played 62 of 68 snaps in his return, and Jaden Dugger went from 64 snaps against Washington to 31.

Every call on this site goes on a public ledger and gets graded. The misses stay up.
Kaelon Black, in the 49ers' white road jersey with red number 26 and gold trousers, runs upfield with the ball held low in his left hand during the 2026 preseason finale at Las Vegas, a Raiders defender in black and a 49ers lineman engaged at left and fans in the front rows behind him.

Atlanta beat San Francisco 29-20 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Sunday. The 49ers are 6-1 and go into the bye with their first loss. They led 14-3 on the first play of the second quarter, Kaelon Black's 30-yard touchdown run, and Atlanta scored the next 23 points: two Nick Folk field goals and Michael Penix Jr. touchdown passes to Nick Muse, Kyle Pitts and Drake London. Kyle Juszczyk's 1-yard catch made it 26-20 with 5:05 left, Eddy Pineiro's extra point went wide left, and Folk's third field goal closed it.

1. San Francisco punted once, and five of its nine possessions ended in a turnover or on downs#

Three drives scored, one punted, two ended in lost fumbles, two in interceptions and one on downs, per the game book's drive chart. Atlanta turned it over zero times and scored 13 points off the four giveaways: Folk's 33-yarder at the horn after Black's fumble at the Atlanta 28, the 90-yard touchdown drive after Jessie Bates intercepted Brock Purdy at the Atlanta 10, and Folk's 31-yarder after Kendal Daniels, the Falcons' rookie linebacker, tipped a third-and-9 pass to himself and returned it to the San Francisco 19 with 2:34 left. George Kittle's fumble at the Atlanta 19 with 57 seconds left ended the last drive, and Daniels recovered that one too. Brock Purdy finished 27 of 40 for 288 yards, one touchdown and the two interceptions, and was sacked twice.

"Anytime you have four turnovers like that, and you get zero, it's real tough to win," Kyle Shanahan said, per 49ers Webzone.

2. The book credits the defense with no sack, no quarterback hit and no pass defensed#

Penix was 25 of 34 for 213 yards and three touchdowns and was not sacked. Every San Francisco defender shows zero in the book's sack, quarterback-hit and pass-defensed columns, and so does the totals row. Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area wrote that the 49ers had not hit Penix through three quarters. The book extends that to four.

Nine linemen played, of 68 defensive snaps: Osa Odighizuwa 49, Romello Height 41, Sebastian Valdez 38, Keion White 37, Gracen Halton 34, Mykel Williams 33, James Thompson Jr. 28, Khalid Kareem 16 and Ogbo Okoronkwo, elevated on Saturday, 10. Nick Bosa has not played since Week 2. The trade deadline is Tuesday, Nov. 10.

3. Four Atlanta first downs came by penalty, three of them on the 90-yard drive#

The 49ers took seven penalties for 55 yards, Atlanta five for 39. On the touchdown drive after the Bates interception, Penix threw incomplete on second-and-20 and Renardo Green was called for illegal contact. He threw incomplete deep on third-and-8 and Jack Jones was called for pass interference, 20 yards, to the San Francisco 34. On third-and-2 at the 26, Thompson was offside, and London's touchdown came on the next snap. Before the half, Atlanta faced fourth-and-4 at the San Francisco 44 with 29 seconds left and Odighizuwa was flagged for encroachment; Folk's field goal came three plays later.

"The timing of some penalties, just keeping them on the field, giving them some big plays, especially when we have them behind the chains," Shanahan said. "But too sloppy to win."

4. McCaffrey gained 69 yards on the first drive and 26 after he came back#

The opening drive netted 64 yards in 10 plays, and McCaffrey accounted for 69 of the gross: 29 on four carries and 40 on two catches, less a false start on Trent Williams. Black was stopped at the 1 three straight times, and on fourth-and-goal McCaffrey went over the top. The club's game notes, via Webzone, call it his sixth straight game with a rushing touchdown, tying Raheem Mostert in 2019 and Derek Loville in 1995 for the longest such streak by a 49ers back since at least 1970.

The book logged his return as questionable early in the second quarter. He was back for the first snap of the third and from there had three carries for 10 yards and three catches for 16, on 34 of 66 offensive snaps. "My leg just died on me," McCaffrey said, per Webzone. "I'll be fine. I'm not worried about it." Shanahan, asked whether McCaffrey looked like himself: "I'll wait until I see on tape. He seemed all right."

5. Black ran for 60 yards before halftime and 3 after it#

Black had 11 carries for 60 yards in the first half, per the book's first-half summary, and one for 3 in the second, on 31 of 66 snaps. Maiocco credited Jordan Watkins's block on A.J. Terrell at the 19 for the touchdown, which the club's notes call the longest run by a 49ers rookie since Elijah Mitchell's 38-yarder at Detroit in 2021. The fumble came on second-and-1 at the Atlanta 28, one play after Jordan James fumbled and Luke Farrell recovered.

6. Kirk played 20 snaps and was not thrown to#

Christian Kirk's debut was 20 of 66 offensive snaps with no target: the receiving table lists 39 targets to nine players, and he is not among them. Brandin Cooks and Watkins started, per the lineup card. Cooks played 45 snaps and caught one of three targets for 13 yards. Watkins played 50 and caught three of six for 56, including the 35-yarder that opened the fourth-quarter drive. Jacob Cowing played 26 and caught three of five for 38. The four wideouts together: 14 of 39 targets, seven catches, 107 yards.

7. Greenlaw played 62 of 68 in his return, and Dugger's share was cut in half#

Dre Greenlaw, back from his one-game suspension, played 62 of 68 defensive snaps and had 12 tackles, four solo. Fred Warner played all 68 and had 13, two for loss. Jaden Dugger played 31 of 68, down from 64 of 67 against Washington, and had the other tackle for loss.

Upton Stout was active and did not play; Shanahan said he was available for emergencies only, per Webzone. Enrique Cruz Jr. and Mac Jones were the other active 49ers who did not play.

8. Pineiro's miss was his seventh in 34 kicks, and the question goes to the plane#

Pineiro's extra point after Juszczyk's touchdown went wide left, so Folk's last field goal made it nine rather than eight. Across the seven box scores this season Pineiro is 6 of 9 on field goals and 21 of 25 on extra points, seven misses in 34 kicks. Asked whether the club would work out kickers during the bye, Shanahan said, per Webzone: "I don't know. I haven't talked to anybody about that. We'll probably discuss on the plane."

San Francisco will sign a kicker on Saturday, and it has not worked one out

San Francisco filed its final Week 2 injury report after Friday's practice with three game designations on it: De'Zhaun Stribling out, Eddy Piñeiro and Kaelon Black questionable. Piñeiro has not practised since the Melbourne game week ended, and the club's roster page carried no second kicker anywhere on Friday afternoon. Kyle Shanahan said San Francisco will add one on Saturday, that two men are under consideration, and that he does not know which. Nine of the twelve names on the report practised in full.

The 49ers rested four veterans Wednesday, and three were full a day later

San Francisco filed its first official Week 2 injury report this week, and eleven 49ers were on it. Six did not practise Wednesday and four of those six were rest days: Nick Bosa, Dre Greenlaw, Christian McCaffrey and Trent Williams. By Thursday, Greenlaw, McCaffrey and Williams were full participants and Bosa was limited. The two men who have not practised either day are Eddy Piñeiro, who is ill, and De'Zhaun Stribling, whose ankle needed surgery. Kaelon Black joined the report Thursday with a groin. Every man on Thursday's report played against the Rams in Melbourne.

San Francisco Stopped The Rams On Fourth And One At Its Own 1, Then Drove 99 Yards

The 49ers opened 1-0 with a 27-7 win over the Rams at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, Thursday evening in the Bay Area and Friday morning in Australia. Los Angeles reached the San Francisco 1 in the third quarter and turned the ball over on downs; San Francisco answered with an 11-play, 99-yard touchdown drive. Connor Colby started at left guard and the whole line played every snap, George Kittle played 30 of 65 in his return, Kaelon Black carried more often than Christian McCaffrey, and De'Zhaun Stribling started at receiver without being thrown to. Nine takeaways off the official game book.

Greenlaw's suspension is over, and Kirk still needs a roster spot

The league lifted Dre Greenlaw's one-game suspension on Tuesday and put him on a roster exemption, and the 49ers released defensive tackle Naquan Jones the same afternoon. Fred Warner and Jaden Dugger played 67 and 64 of 67 defensive snaps on Monday with Greenlaw out. Jones's spot is the one Greenlaw needs, which leaves the 53 full again and means Christian Kirk, whose practice window closes Nov. 5, needs a second move. Kyle Shanahan said after Monday's win that Mike Evans's Achilles tendinitis is not a long-term thing; Ian Rapoport said on ESPN, per 49ers Webzone, that Evans will have to manage it for the better part of the season. Shanahan said he would be surprised to get Deebo Samuel or Demarcus Robinson back for Atlanta. James Thompson Jr. played 21 snaps on Monday in his return from an ankle injury. Luke Gifford (groin) and Upton Stout (shoulder) have no update since Monday; the first report of the short week follows Wednesday's practice.

Christian Kirk returned to practice the day Mike Evans sat out

The 49ers opened Christian Kirk's 21-day practice window on Thursday, 81 days after he strained a calf on the first day of training camp, and Kyle Shanahan said he was ready to go after a strong weekend. Mike Evans did not practice with ribs and Achilles soreness, which leaves the receiver room thinner than Monday's count. Shanahan called injured reserve for Deebo Samuel 'a possibility.' Nick Bosa, James Thompson Jr. and Gracen Halton sat out Thursday; Kyle Juszczyk was limited. The club promoted Ogbo Okoronkwo to the 53 into the spot Greenlaw's suspension opened and signed linebacker Eugene Asante to the practice squad. Washington is at Levi's Stadium on Monday night.

The 49ers worked out four linebackers the day after Greenlaw lost his appeal

Dre Greenlaw's appeal of his one-game suspension was denied Tuesday by hearing officer James Thrash, so he misses Monday night's game against Washington and can return the next day. On Wednesday, a players' day off, the 49ers worked out four free-agent linebackers, per the league's transaction report as cited by 49ers Webzone: Eugene Asante, Jamon Johnson, Kobe King and Anfernee Orji. Four healthy linebackers remain on the 53, and ESPN's Nick Wagoner expects rookie Jaden Dugger to start. Ian Rapoport said Tuesday that Deebo Samuel is likely out two weeks and is not headed to injured reserve. Practice resumes Thursday.

Held upJul 29, 2026

Kaelon Black is on the San Francisco 49ers' initial 53-man roster as announced at the August 30, 2026 mandatory cut. Scored off the initial 53 only: the practice squad is a miss, a later signing or elevation after the initial roster is a miss, and being placed on injured reserve from the initial 53 counts as a hit.

Black is a rookie running back whose Wednesday workload increased because Jordan James fractured a rib, which is the most fragile possible reason to be getting reps. If James is back before cut day the reps go with him. Against the call: the 49ers carried McCaffrey plus a thin room behind him, and a back who has taken first-team-adjacent work in camp is usually kept over a body they would have to teach. This resolves in 32 days and it is genuinely close.

Kirk is activated, and the 49ers will dress exactly 48 at Atlanta

The 49ers activated wide receiver Christian Kirk off injured reserve Saturday, re-signed defensive lineman Ogbo Okoronkwo to the practice squad a day after releasing him, released Kevin Givens from the practice squad and elevated Okoronkwo and linebacker Jalen Graham for Sunday at Atlanta. The club's active list now carries 54 names, six of them ruled out, which leaves exactly the 48 a team may dress if questionable corners Siran Neal and Upton Stout play. The NFL also fined Fred Warner $65,673 for two fourth-quarter hits against Washington.

Six 49ers are out at Atlanta, and Shanahan may dress fewer than 48

The 49ers ruled out Nick Bosa, Mike Evans, Deebo Samuel, Luke Gifford, Marques Sigle and Garret Wallow for Sunday at Atlanta. Christian Kirk, Siran Neal and Upton Stout are questionable; Kyle Shanahan called Kirk's tag procedural. The club released defensive lineman Ogbo Okoronkwo on Friday, opening a spot on the 53. Shanahan said the team may go into the game with fewer than the maximum 48 active, with quarterback Kurtis Rourke and possibly lineman Enrique Cruz Jr. the last two available, something he could not recall happening in his career.

Stribling is out ten weeks, and the club says it doesn't need another receiver

Kyle Shanahan spoke before Wednesday's practice, his first availability since the flight home from Melbourne, and answered the two questions the opener left open. De'Zhaun Stribling had ankle surgery and will miss close to ten weeks, a window that covers nine games. Jake Tonges had knee surgery, is out for the season and went on injured reserve Wednesday. KhaDarel Hodge was promoted to the 53-man roster in the same transaction and Jack Stoll signed to the practice squad, one day after the club worked him out. Shanahan said San Francisco does not need to add a receiver. Stribling was still on the club's Active table at 4:53 p.m. Pacific.

The 49ers' First Depth Chart Lists Demarcus Robinson As A Starting Receiver

San Francisco released its first unofficial depth chart of 2026 on Tuesday morning, with Demarcus Robinson at a starting receiver spot, and then held a joint practice with the Tennessee Titans. The chart is a health document: Ricky Pearsall has been on season-ending injured reserve since August 1, Christian Kirk has not practised a session of camp, and Mike Evans suited up Tuesday and did not compete. Two published readings of the chart disagree about where De'Zhaun Stribling sits, and two counts of the practice disagree about how many passes he caught. Nick Bosa missed a fifth straight practice, and Kyle Shanahan said the knee has tendinitis related to the ACL recovery. Two Titans tackles were ejected from a session that had scuffles on three of the first four plays.

The Injury List Picked Wednesday's Left Guard

The 49ers practiced Wednesday with 18 of their active 90 unavailable and the top five receivers they entered camp with all among them. Robert Jones took the first-team left guard reps, per David Lombardi, and Chris Foerster explained it as a plan to move Connor Colby around that the injuries to Carver Willis and Brett Toth cut short. Brock Purdy went 13 of 14. Two more players left during practice. Nobody who filed on the session reported a kick return by anybody, which is inconvenient for a call this site made Wednesday morning.
