The 49ers worked out four linebackers the day after Greenlaw lost his appeal
Dre Greenlaw sits Monday against Washington. Four healthy linebackers are left on the 53, and rookie Jaden Dugger is in line to start.

Dre Greenlaw's one-game suspension stands. Hearing officer James Thrash, appointed jointly by the NFL and the players' union, denied the appeal Tuesday evening, as David Bonilla of 49ers Webzone and Nick Wagoner of ESPN reported. Greenlaw misses Monday night's game against Washington at Levi's Stadium and can return to the active roster the next day, per Wagoner.
Second year, same result. It is Greenlaw's second one-game suspension for unsportsmanlike conduct in as many seasons, and the second appeal he has lost. The first came with Denver in 2025, after he went at referee Brad Allen.
Four linebackers in for workouts. On Wednesday the 49ers worked out four free-agent linebackers, Bonilla reported Wednesday afternoon, citing the league's transaction report: Eugene Asante, Jamon Johnson, Kobe King and Anfernee Orji. No signing had followed by Wednesday evening, on the league's wire or the club's site. A workout is a list, not a signing.
Who is left. Four healthy linebackers are on the 53: Fred Warner, Jaden Dugger, Luke Gifford and Tatum Bethune. Garret Wallow is out at least a couple of weeks with a hamstring, Kyle Shanahan said Monday. Jalen Graham is on the practice squad. Nick Martin, on injured reserve with a hamstring since Aug. 31, was "getting close" on Monday, per Shanahan. There was no designation for his return on the wire Wednesday.
Dugger is the likely starter. Wagoner wrote Tuesday night that the rookie "is likely to start in Greenlaw's place." Dugger played 47 of the 63 defensive snaps at Seattle after Greenlaw's ejection, with a sack, per the game book. Gifford played 19.
Samuel, two weeks. Ian Rapoport of NFL Network said Tuesday on the Pat McAfee Show that Deebo Samuel is "out two weeks, likely," and that he does not believe Samuel is headed to injured reserve. The 49ers' bye is Week 8, so Rapoport expects a re-evaluation after it. Shanahan said Monday only that Samuel will "miss some time." The club's roster page still carries Samuel on the active 53 as of Wednesday afternoon.
A receiver name, one report. Rapoport also said the 49ers "make sense" as a trade destination for Minnesota's Jauan Jennings, who played his first NFL seasons in San Francisco. That is one reporter's read and no more. Jennings has two catches for nine yards in four games with the Vikings, per Bonilla.
The week. Wednesday was a players' day off, according to the practice and media schedule Webzone published that morning. The first practice is Thursday at 1:30 p.m., after Shanahan speaks at 12:35. Raheem Morris, Klay Kubiak and Brock Purdy talk after Friday's practice, and Shanahan again after Saturday's. The first injury report of Washington week is due after Thursday's session. That is where Nick Bosa, Kyle Juszczyk and James Thompson Jr., whom Shanahan said Monday "all got a chance" to play, get their first marks.
