Christian Kirk returned to practice the day Mike Evans sat out

The 49ers opened Kirk's 21-day window off injured reserve, 81 days after his calf went on the first day of camp. Evans has Achilles soreness on top of the ribs, and Gracen Halton joined the list with a quad.

Every call on this site goes on a public ledger and gets graded. The misses stay up.

Christian Kirk is back on the practice field. The 49ers opened his 21-day window off injured reserve on Thursday, per the club's release, and Kyle Shanahan said before practice that Kirk would be limited in his first day back. Kirk strained a calf on July 26, the first day of training camp, and had not practiced since, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reported. That is 81 days.

Earlier than the coach expected. "He has had some setbacks since hurting it the first day of training camp, so that's why he's taken a while," Shanahan said, as transcribed by David Bonilla of 49ers Webzone. "I told you guys I wasn't expecting this week on Monday, but it's just because I didn't ask." He said Kirk had "a really good week, had an awesome weekend." The club now has 21 days to put him on the 53 or leave him on reserve for the season.

Evans has a second injury. Mike Evans, who has played the last two games with a rib injury, did not practice Thursday because of ribs and Achilles soreness, Shanahan said. Maiocco and Bonilla both reported it. Without Samuel, the 53 carries four receivers: Evans, Brandin Cooks, Jacob Cowing and Jordan Watkins. Cowing was a full participant Thursday with an ankle on the report.

Samuel and injured reserve. Asked whether Deebo Samuel could go on injured reserve with the hamstring, Shanahan said: "It is a possibility. If we didn't have that bye week, I think it'd be around that area, but gaining that week where we don't play is why we're still trying to wait out right now and hope we don't have to do it." The bye is Week 8. Reserve would cost Samuel at least four games.

The rest of the receivers on reserve. Demarcus Robinson has "probably an outside chance for the bye week," Shanahan said, and he hopes to have him back after it. De'Zhaun Stribling is "still ways away" but "on track."

Bosa, not today. "Hoping he can go, but not able to practice today," Shanahan said of Nick Bosa and the calf. Asked whether the injury will need managing all season: "No, usually calves heal, and they're usually good." The call, he said, rests on whether Bosa is fully recovered "and what are the percentages of him re-injuring that."

Thursday's report. Not practicing: Bosa (knee, calf), Evans (ribs, Achilles), Gracen Halton (quadriceps), Samuel (hamstring), Marques Sigle (ankle), James Thompson Jr. (ankle) and Garret Wallow (hamstring), with Christian McCaffrey and Trent Williams given rest days. Limited: Kyle Juszczyk (knee), Kirk (calf), Colton McKivitz (illness), Siran Neal (neck), Upton Stout (shoulder), Mykel Williams (knee) and Carver Willis (toe). Full: Cowing (ankle) and Romello Height (hand). Halton is the new name; he was not on Shanahan's pre-practice list.

Okoronkwo is back on the 53. The club promoted Ogbo Okoronkwo from the practice squad six days after it released him and five after it signed him back. He took the roster spot Dre Greenlaw's one-game suspension opened, Maiocco reported. The league's wire lists Greenlaw on Reserve/Suspended since Oct. 12; he can return the day after Monday's game.

Asante, one of Wednesday's four. Eugene Asante, one of the four linebackers the club worked out Wednesday, signed to the practice squad into Okoronkwo's spot. He went undrafted out of Auburn in 2025 and has been on the practice squads of Miami, Cleveland, Atlanta and Arizona, per the club. Arizona released him on Oct. 13. He has not played a regular-season game. The 49ers now carry two linebackers on the practice squad, Asante and Jalen Graham, behind four healthy ones on the 53: Fred Warner, Jaden Dugger, Luke Gifford and Tatum Bethune.

The week. Practice again Friday, with Raheem Morris, Klay Kubiak and Brock Purdy afterward, and Saturday. Washington plays at Levi's Stadium on Monday night.

Bosa is out Monday, which Shanahan says is what the 49ers expected

Kyle Shanahan ruled out Nick Bosa (knee, calf), Deebo Samuel (hamstring), Garret Wallow (hamstring) and Marques Sigle (ankle) for Monday night against Washington. Mike Evans, Christian Kirk, Gracen Halton, Mykel Williams, Upton Stout and Siran Neal are questionable. Kyle Juszczyk is expected to play, eight days after missing Seattle. Asked whether Kirk will be activated off injured reserve, Shanahan said \"Possibly\"; the 53 is full, so that takes a corresponding move.

Juszczyk practiced in full, and Lynch says there is a chance he plays Monday

Kyle Juszczyk was a full participant in Friday's practice, 12 days after a hyperextended knee and bone bruise, and John Lynch told KNBR there is a chance he plays Washington on Monday. Christian Kirk was limited; activating him would cost someone a spot on a full 53. Nick Bosa, now listed with knee and calf, did not practice, nor did Mike Evans, Gracen Halton or Romello Height. Lynch said trade calls have picked up and that George Kittle asked him about Khalil Mack. Kittle said he asks all the time.

The 49ers worked out four linebackers the day after Greenlaw lost his appeal

Dre Greenlaw's appeal of his one-game suspension was denied Tuesday by hearing officer James Thrash, so he misses Monday night's game against Washington and can return the next day. On Wednesday, a players' day off, the 49ers worked out four free-agent linebackers, per the league's transaction report as cited by 49ers Webzone: Eugene Asante, Jamon Johnson, Kobe King and Anfernee Orji. Four healthy linebackers remain on the 53, and ESPN's Nick Wagoner expects rookie Jaden Dugger to start. Ian Rapoport said Tuesday that Deebo Samuel is likely out two weeks and is not headed to injured reserve. Practice resumes Thursday.

Deebo Samuel will miss some time, leaving the 49ers four available receivers

Kyle Shanahan said on a conference call Monday that Deebo Samuel's hamstring \"got him pretty good\" and he will miss some time, so the 49ers will most likely activate a practice-squad receiver for Washington next Monday night. The NFL suspended Dre Greenlaw one game without pay for head-butting Seattle's Ernest Jones IV; his appeal is heard Tuesday, and his 2025 appeal of a one-game suspension was denied. Garret Wallow strained a hamstring and is out at least a couple of weeks, which leaves four linebackers. Nick Bosa, Kyle Juszczyk and James Thompson Jr. have a chance for Week 6, and Nick Martin is getting close.

OpenJul 31, 2026

Between the 49ers' first regular-season game and 2026-11-01, Deebo Samuel runs more pass routes from the slot than from out wide. Method, fixed in advance: alignment splits as published for Samuel over that span, slot routes against wide routes, backfield routes excluded from both sides. Ties resolve as FALSE. The comparison is his own two figures, so no league-wide source is needed to score it.

The call is on the ROLE the money implies, not on production. His 2025 usage in Washington was 260 slot routes against 141 out wide and 15 from the backfield, out of 416, at 5.3 average air yards per target across 99 targets, with 67 of those 99 inside ten yards. Niners Nation projects him to the slot with Stribling at Z and Mike Evans at X. A one-year agreement whose value the player's own agent describes as a ceiling is a continuity buy, and a continuity buy uses the player it just watched rather than the one from 2021. If he instead lines up mostly wide, the read in the piece is wrong and the team bought something closer to the older version.

Without Bosa, the defense Shanahan hoped would survive is third in points allowed

Kyle Shanahan said the injuries on his defensive line had him hoping to survive until the second half of the season. Through five games the 49ers have allowed 93 points, 18.6 a game, and only Minnesota and Kansas City have allowed fewer per game. Bosa is out Monday against Washington, Halton and Mykel Williams are questionable, Malik Mustapha starts again for Marques Sigle, and Brock Purdy is five attempts from qualifying for the career passer-rating list.

Leading the NFL in efficiency at 5-0 has been worth less than half a win

From 1999 through 2025, 51 NFL teams won their first five games, and they won 63 percent of their remaining games. The ten that also led the league in net expected points added per play after five games won 66 percent of the rest; the other 41 won 63 percent. Over the 49ers' 12 remaining games that gap is about four-tenths of a win. San Francisco is 5-0, has outscored opponents by 61 points and ranks first in net expected points per play. The base rate projects about 12.6 to 12.9 wins.

The 49ers gave Seattle 17 points off turnovers and took 21 back

Sunday's 32-29 win at Seattle was the first game this season in which the 49ers had to win a turnover exchange rather than avoid one. They gave the ball away three times, more than in their first four games combined, and Seattle scored 17 points off them, including both of its touchdowns. The 49ers scored 21 off four takeaways, and all three of their first-half touchdowns came on Seattle possessions that started inside the Seattle 12 after a Corliss Waitman punt. Seattle's five field-goal drives died between the San Francisco 22 and 32, three of them after sacks. The 49ers' own offense scored 11 points on nine possessions that did not start with a takeaway, both scores after Deebo Samuel left. Opponents have now scored eight touchdowns and kicked 12 field goals in five games.

Two days after the 35-13 win over Miami, the official game books show where opponents are running against San Francisco: 42 of 54 designed runs across two games went up the middle or over a guard, for 4.0 yards a carry. Miami sent 17 of its 19 first-half designed runs inside for 74 yards. Fox analyst Daryl Johnston said on the broadcast that Kyle Shanahan had flagged the between-the-tackles run defense as a concern. James Thompson Jr., who took 42 defensive snaps across the two games, has a high-ankle sprain, and Gracen Halton, who made his first career start Sunday, has out-snapped C.J. West 63 to 49.

San Francisco Has Never Been Over The Roster Limit. The 91st Man Has A Name And An Exemption.

Isaac Alarcon does not count against the 49ers' 90-man offseason roster. The NFL granted San Francisco an exemption for him in April, which means the club has been sitting exactly on the limit rather than one body above it, and that every signing since has cost somebody a job by rule rather than by choice. Sunday produced four transactions, two of them replacements for men who broke on Saturday, and three edge-rusher workouts that say the club is not finished.
