Stribling is out ten weeks, and the club says it doesn't need another receiver
De'Zhaun Stribling had ankle surgery and Kyle Shanahan put the recovery at close to ten weeks, which is nine games. Jake Tonges is out for the season and went on injured reserve Wednesday. San Francisco has added two tight ends in two days and nobody at receiver, and Shanahan says it does not need to.

De'Zhaun Stribling had ankle surgery. Kyle Shanahan put the rookie receiver's recovery at close to ten weeks.
Shanahan spoke to reporters before Wednesday's practice. David Bonilla at 49ers Webzone, publishing Wednesday afternoon, carried him this way: "Not exactly sure, but it's going to be some time. Close to 10 weeks ... We feel good he'll get back this season. It'll take some time." Kyle Posey at Niners Nation, updating at 1:11 p.m. Pacific, has the same number and the same hedge, and adds an excerpt from Ian Rapoport saying the club and the player "opted to repair his deltoid rupture" on new information early this week, with a return in "late November or Early December."
Ten weeks from Wednesday is November 25. Nine 49ers games fall on or before it: Miami, Arizona, Denver, at Seattle, Washington and at Atlanta, the Week 8 bye, then Las Vegas, at Dallas and Minnesota. The first game on the other side is Seattle at Levi's Stadium on November 29. What decides his return is the ten weeks, not the four-game minimum that comes with an injured reserve designation.
The move itself has not been filed. Shanahan said the club will place Stribling on injured reserve later this week. He was still on the Active table of the club's roster page at 4:53 p.m. Pacific Wednesday, and the club's transaction log carried nothing on him. The 09/16 entry on that log reads: Hodge promoted, Stoll signed, Tonges to injured reserve.
Jake Tonges is out for the season. He had surgery on the knee he hurt in the second quarter in Melbourne, and he went on injured reserve Wednesday. Rapoport gave the injury as an MCL, which is what Shanahan had guessed after the game six days earlier. Tonges caught 34 passes for 293 yards and five touchdowns last season and signed a two-year, eight-million-dollar contract with San Francisco in the offseason. He played eight offensive snaps in the opener before he came off.
KhaDarel Hodge is on the 53. The promotion is the roster half of Tonges going on injured reserve, and it moves a receiver into a spot a tight end vacated. Hodge played one offensive snap against the Rams and 12 of San Francisco's 20 special-teams snaps, 60 percent, off the Playtime Percentage pages of the official game book. The club's release credits him with 119 games across five clubs, 67 receptions, 1,026 yards and two touchdowns.
Shanahan said San Francisco does not need to add a receiver. He believes the club has as much depth at the position as any team in the league and can carry on as it is. The room he is describing is Mike Evans, Deebo Samuel Sr., Demarcus Robinson, Jacob Cowing, Jordan Watkins and Hodge. Watkins was on the Not Active list in Melbourne. Cowing played five offensive snaps.
And there is a condition on taking those snaps. Seven of Evans' 49 snaps came in the slot, and Matt Barrows of The Athletic has him starting the game there, with his first three catches, all third-down conversions, from that alignment. Shanahan, asked about it Wednesday: "If you don't play in the slot, it's kind of hard to play in our offense. We're inside the numbers a majority of the time, so even if you're the outside guy, you're still in the slot most of the time."
What is actually open is snaps, not production. Stribling played 21 of 65 offensive plays in the opener and was not targeted once. All 34 of San Francisco's targets went to eight other men: eight to Christian McCaffrey, seven each to Evans and Samuel, five to Kittle, three to Robinson, two to Farrell, and one each to Kaelon Black and Jake Brendel.
The tight end room has taken two men in two days. Brayden Willis was promoted to the active roster Tuesday. Stoll signed to the practice squad Wednesday, one day after the NFL's transaction report showed him working out for the club alongside tight ends Lawrence Cager and Tanner Conner. Stoll has played 76 games with 32 starts and 28 receptions in five seasons, and Cleveland waived him on August 28. Khalil Dinkins is the other tight end on the practice squad.
The depth chart moved for the first time since September 8, and the offense on it is a day behind. The page stamps itself September 16 and lists Tonges second at tight end and Stribling second at receiver. Hodge does not appear on it. Luke Farrell, who played 46 offensive snaps in Melbourne against George Kittle's 30, is tied for third.
Wednesday's practice, as Shanahan gave it before the session. Not practising: Eddy Piñeiro, sick; Stribling, ankle; Nick Bosa, Dre Greenlaw and Christian McCaffrey, all rest. Limited: Kyle Juszczyk, finger; Kittle, Achilles; Khalid Kareem, shoulder. The club's injury report page returned no Week 2 table at 2:54 p.m. Pacific, so the participation report the league requires after a practice day is still owed.
Shanahan also said he did not modify the practice week for the trip home, because the off days and a Monday session the coaches did not attend had already absorbed it. He said he was sick himself all weekend and was fine by Monday, and that the players recovered at different rates.
The roster, counted by name off the club's four tables at 4:53 p.m. Pacific: 55 names on the Active table, 15 on the practice squad, 13 on Reserve/Injured and two on Reserve/PUP. Those are the names the page prints, not the roster the league recognises: the active table runs two longer than the 53-man limit and the practice squad two short of 17. One of the two is McKinnley Jackson, who is on the Active table with no jersey number a day after the club announced it had signed him to the practice squad. The second is not identified here, and the club has posted no transaction that would explain it.
