After Pineiro's field goal, Washington ran 40 plays and the 49ers ran nine

The 49ers are 6-0 after leading 20-3 at halftime. Mike Evans left in the second quarter with the Achilles that kept him out of practice all week, and four of Washington's 19 first downs came by San Francisco penalty, all after halftime.

Every call on this site goes on a public ledger and gets graded. The misses stay up.
Malik Mustapha, in the 49ers' red home jersey with number 6 and gold trousers, crouched in a two-point stance at Levi's Stadium before a snap against Denver on Oct. 4, 2026, with full stands behind him and a teammate in red in the background.

San Francisco beat Washington 23-17 at Levi's Stadium on Monday night and is 6-0, its first 6-0 start since 2019 and its fifth in franchise history, per the club's game notes. It led 20-3 at halftime and 23-3 with 5:56 left in the third quarter. Washington scored on its next two possessions, reached the San Francisco 17 on the one after that, and had the ball at the 28 with 22 seconds left on the last one. Keion White and Romello Height sacked Jayden Daniels on the final play.

1. The lead was built on three drives, and the missed extra point is why it was six at the end#

The 49ers scored touchdowns on their first two possessions, 9 plays for 64 yards and 8 for 72, and added a 14-play, 69-yard drive that took 6:13 off the clock at the end of the half. George Kittle caught the first score from 11 yards. Christian McCaffrey ran in the other two from the 1, the first after Mike Evans's 54-yard catch put the ball at the Washington 18.

Eddy Pineiro's extra point after the first McCaffrey touchdown went wide right, so the lead was 13-3 instead of 14-3 and the final margin was six rather than seven. "You've got to make your extra points," Kyle Shanahan said afterward. McCaffrey's fumble at the Washington 21 with 9:11 left in the half was the game's only turnover, and Washington went three-and-out from it.

2. After the field goal, the offense had three possessions and no first downs#

Pineiro's 33-yard field goal ended an 11-play, 65-yard drive, and the offense did not make another first down. Its last three possessions went three plays for minus 1 yard, three for no gain and three for 3 net yards after a delay-of-game penalty on the punt team: nine plays, two sacks of Purdy, three punts. Washington ran 40 plays over the same stretch, per the game book's drive chart, and held the ball for 11:27 of the fourth quarter to San Francisco's 3:33.

The 49ers gained 303 yards in the first half, per the book, and 72 after it. Shanahan said "some of the stuff was frustrating," and Purdy said he was "a little upset with how I finish the game."

3. Four of Washington's first downs came by penalty, and two of them erased stops#

Washington's 19 first downs were 13 by passing, 2 by rushing and 4 by penalty, and all four came after halftime, on the three drives that produced its 14 points and its trip to the 17. Gracen Halton's low block moved the ball from the 7 to the 3 on the Stefon Diggs touchdown drive. Renardo Green's illegal contact wiped a third-and-4 incompletion on the Rachaad White touchdown drive, and Osa Odighizuwa's roughing-the-passer penalty on third-and-8 turned a 23-yard completion to the 18 into first-and-goal at the 9; White scored on the next snap.

The fourth came with 3:01 left and took a sack off the book. On fourth-and-8 from the San Francisco 29, Height and Jaden Dugger sacked Daniels for 11 yards, Ashtyn Davis was flagged for illegal contact, and Washington had first-and-10 at the 24. San Francisco was penalized 11 times for 88 yards; Washington 7 for 66.

4. Mustapha got the defense off the field at the 17, and the last two plays were a grounding call and a sack#

From the 24, Washington reached third-and-3 at the 17 with 2:19 left, and Malik Mustapha stopped Jeremy McNichols for no gain. On fourth-and-3, Daniels threw deep right for Treylon Burks and Mustapha broke it up. Washington was 1 for 3 on fourth down.

The 49ers then went three-and-out, and Siran Neal's fair-catch interference on the punt gave Washington the ball at its own 46 with 52 seconds left rather than at its 31. Daniels hit Antonio Williams for 17 to the 28, was called for intentional grounding with a 10-second runoff, and was sacked for 18 yards on the final snap. Mustapha played all 67 defensive snaps.

5. Evans left with 1:10 in the half, and the passing game went with him#

Evans caught three passes for 94 yards on five targets and was hurt on a 16-yard catch to the Washington 12 with 1:10 left in the half. He walked to the locker room with the medical staff and was ruled out at the start of the third quarter, after 25 of 62 offensive snaps.

With Evans on the field, Purdy was 16 of 20 for 210 yards, counted off the play-by-play. After he left, Purdy was 5 of 9 for 54 and was sacked twice. The other receivers were targeted four times all night: Jordan Watkins once, a 22-yard catch, on 47 snaps; Brandin Cooks twice, one catch for 13, on 32; Jacob Cowing none on 15; Malik Turner none on 3.

Shanahan said the soreness was "the same thing that was bothering him all week" and that he did not believe Evans needed imaging. "I hope he recovers throughout the week, but you don't think it's a long-term thing," he said. Christian Kirk is "a possibility" for next week, per Shanahan.

6. Purdy passed 1,500 career attempts on the first drive, and the club lists him first in career passer rating#

Purdy came into the game with 1,495 career regular-season attempts, per ESPN's career totals, so his fifth throw of the night, a 6-yard completion to McCaffrey, took him past the 1,500-attempt minimum for the career passer-rating list. The club's game notes put his 105.6 career rating first in NFL history at that minimum, with Lamar Jackson second at 102.7.

7. Dugger had 11 tackles on 64 snaps, and the sacks came from the line without Bosa#

Dugger led the 49ers with 11 tackles, 8 of them solo, and played 64 of 67 defensive snaps with Dre Greenlaw suspended and Garret Wallow inactive. Luke Gifford started beside him in the base defense, played four snaps and left with a groin injury.

The four sacks went to Odighizuwa, on third-and-9 in the first quarter; Halton, on first-and-19 after a holding penalty; Mykel Williams, for 12 yards on third-and-8, his first of the season in his second game back from the knee; and White and Height on the last play. Height was credited with four quarterback hits in the book, the most on either side. Nick Bosa was inactive for the fourth straight game. Upton Stout, shoulder, also left and did not return, per Shanahan; the book credits him with 28 of 67 snaps.

San Francisco plays at Atlanta on Sunday at 10 a.m. Pacific.

Correction, 2026-10-21

The receivers other than Mike Evans were targeted three times, not four. The list in the same paragraph (Watkins once, Cooks twice, Cowing and Turner none) adds to three, as do the play-by-play and ESPN's box score.

Six 49ers are out at Atlanta, and Shanahan may dress fewer than 48

The 49ers ruled out Nick Bosa, Mike Evans, Deebo Samuel, Luke Gifford, Marques Sigle and Garret Wallow for Sunday at Atlanta. Christian Kirk, Siran Neal and Upton Stout are questionable; Kyle Shanahan called Kirk's tag procedural. The club released defensive lineman Ogbo Okoronkwo on Friday, opening a spot on the 53. Shanahan said the team may go into the game with fewer than the maximum 48 active, with quarterback Kurtis Rourke and possibly lineman Enrique Cruz Jr. the last two available, something he could not recall happening in his career.

Nick Bosa missed Thursday too, and Lynch put him in the Evans bucket

Nick Bosa did not practice Thursday, per the 49ers' official report, a day after Kyle Shanahan said he hoped Bosa would. Mike Evans missed a second day, listed with ribs and Achilles tendinitis. John Lynch told KNBR that Evans's status is 'still TBD' and that Bosa is 'in that same Mike Evans bucket,' with an answer from Shanahan due Friday. Mykel Williams returned as a limited participant and Trent Williams was full after Wednesday's rest day. Eight players missed both days.

Half of Washington's second-half catches ended at Dugger or Warner

San Francisco beat Washington 23-17 to go 6-0, gaining 303 yards in the first half and 72 after it while Washington went from 90 to 224. Jayden Daniels completed 22 of 30 passes for 212 yards after halftime, almost all of them short, and Jaden Dugger and Fred Warner made the tackle on 11 of the 22, with Dre Greenlaw suspended, Garret Wallow inactive and Luke Gifford out after four snaps. Two of Washington's four first downs by penalty were illegal-contact calls on Renardo Green and Ashtyn Davis, the second wiping out a fourth-down sack; PFF graded Davis lowest of the 20 49ers defenders who played. Purdy threw 21 of his 29 passes to backs and tight ends, and after Evans left with his sore Achilles he threw nine more and one went to a wide receiver. Romello Height had four quarterback hits after missing Friday's practice. Greenlaw's suspension was lifted Tuesday; Christian Kirk is a possibility for Atlanta.

How much of Brock Purdy's 105.6 passer rating belongs to Brock Purdy?

Brock Purdy finished Monday's win over Washington with 1,524 career regular-season attempts and a 105.6 passer rating, first among quarterbacks with at least 1,500 attempts, ahead of Lamar Jackson's 102.7. Against the league average over the same seasons, 90.7, he is 14.9 points better. Of 81 quarterbacks who entered the NFL in 1999 or later and reached 1,500 attempts, only Patrick Mahomes reached it further above the league. Other quarterbacks in Kyle Shanahan's offense since 2017 have rated 1.3 points above the league; Jimmy Garoppolo rated 8.9 above. The ten quarterbacks who qualified furthest above the league kept about four-fifths of that margin over their next 1,000 attempts.

Without Bosa, the defense Shanahan hoped would survive is third in points allowed

Kyle Shanahan said the injuries on his defensive line had him hoping to survive until the second half of the season. Through five games the 49ers have allowed 93 points, 18.6 a game, and only Minnesota and Kansas City have allowed fewer per game. Bosa is out Monday against Washington, Halton and Mykel Williams are questionable, Malik Mustapha starts again for Marques Sigle, and Brock Purdy is five attempts from qualifying for the career passer-rating list.

OpenJul 31, 2026

Between the 49ers' first regular-season game and 2026-11-01, Deebo Samuel runs more pass routes from the slot than from out wide. Method, fixed in advance: alignment splits as published for Samuel over that span, slot routes against wide routes, backfield routes excluded from both sides. Ties resolve as FALSE. The comparison is his own two figures, so no league-wide source is needed to score it.

The call is on the ROLE the money implies, not on production. His 2025 usage in Washington was 260 slot routes against 141 out wide and 15 from the backfield, out of 416, at 5.3 average air yards per target across 99 targets, with 67 of those 99 inside ten yards. Niners Nation projects him to the slot with Stribling at Z and Mike Evans at X. A one-year agreement whose value the player's own agent describes as a ceiling is a continuity buy, and a continuity buy uses the player it just watched rather than the one from 2021. If he instead lines up mostly wide, the read in the piece is wrong and the team bought something closer to the older version.

Kirk is activated, and the 49ers will dress exactly 48 at Atlanta

The 49ers activated wide receiver Christian Kirk off injured reserve Saturday, re-signed defensive lineman Ogbo Okoronkwo to the practice squad a day after releasing him, released Kevin Givens from the practice squad and elevated Okoronkwo and linebacker Jalen Graham for Sunday at Atlanta. The club's active list now carries 54 names, six of them ruled out, which leaves exactly the 48 a team may dress if questionable corners Siran Neal and Upton Stout play. The NFL also fined Fred Warner $65,673 for two fourth-quarter hits against Washington.

Mykel Williams and Siran Neal are the new names on Wednesday's list

Kyle Shanahan named nine 49ers who would not practice on Wednesday, the first day of Atlanta week, per the club's transcript. Seven were already hurt or inactive on Monday. The two new names are defensive end Mykel Williams (knee) and defensive back Siran Neal (knee), who both played against Washington. Nick Bosa (calf) did not practice, and Shanahan said he hopes Bosa is out there Thursday. On Mike Evans's Achilles tendinitis, Shanahan said the club managed it last week and is managing it this week. Dre Greenlaw and Christian Kirk were set to practice, per Shanahan, and Greenlaw is still on a roster exemption, not the 53. The club signed Naquan Jones back to the practice squad a day after releasing him, and released linebacker Eugene Asante to make room.

Greenlaw's suspension is over, and Kirk still needs a roster spot

The league lifted Dre Greenlaw's one-game suspension on Tuesday and put him on a roster exemption, and the 49ers released defensive tackle Naquan Jones the same afternoon. Fred Warner and Jaden Dugger played 67 and 64 of 67 defensive snaps on Monday with Greenlaw out. Jones's spot is the one Greenlaw needs, which leaves the 53 full again and means Christian Kirk, whose practice window closes Nov. 5, needs a second move. Kyle Shanahan said after Monday's win that Mike Evans's Achilles tendinitis is not a long-term thing; Ian Rapoport said on ESPN, per 49ers Webzone, that Evans will have to manage it for the better part of the season. Shanahan said he would be surprised to get Deebo Samuel or Demarcus Robinson back for Atlanta. James Thompson Jr. played 21 snaps on Monday in his return from an ankle injury. Luke Gifford (groin) and Upton Stout (shoulder) have no update since Monday; the first report of the short week follows Wednesday's practice.

Ten 49ers To Watch Against Tennessee, Starting With The Left Guard On The Depth Chart

The 49ers open the preseason against the Titans on Thursday night at Levi's Stadium, 6 p.m. PT, on KPIX CBS 5 locally. Kyle Shanahan said after Tuesday's joint practice that there will not be many starters playing, and Christian McCaffrey and Nick Bosa have each missed multiple sessions. That makes the game an audition: Robert Jones is listed as the starting left guard on the club's first unofficial depth chart, rookie Carver Willis is behind him, and second-round receiver De'Zhaun Stribling is coming off the loudest practice any 49ers rookie has had this camp. Ten men to watch, plus the injuries that shape who is available.
