The Colts sent the 49ers a defensive tackle Wednesday and took one Friday

Indianapolis, which took a 2027 fourth-round pick for DeForest Buckner on Wednesday, put Givens on its 53-man roster Friday. San Francisco's practice squad drops to 16 of 17, and that one spot is the only opening on a roster whose 53 is full.

Indianapolis signed Kevin Givens to its 53-man roster on Friday, taking him off the 49ers' practice squad. The league's transaction wire lists it as a free-agent signing dated Oct. 30, and the Colts announced it on social media, per 49ers Webzone. They are the same club that sent DeForest Buckner to San Francisco on Wednesday for a 2027 fourth-round pick.

The week's business between the two clubs is now one defensive tackle in each direction. Only one side paid a draft pick.

Who Givens was on this roster. He signed with the 49ers as an undrafted free agent on May 3, 2019, according to the club's Oct. 27 release, and played 71 regular-season games for them over seven seasons, with 14 starts, 95 tackles and 8.0 sacks. He added nine postseason games. This season he played once, against Arizona in Week 3 after an elevation on Sept. 26, and made two tackles.

His 2026 ran in short stretches. San Francisco waived him on Aug. 5, signed him to the practice squad on Sept. 1, released him from it on Oct. 24 and signed him back on Oct. 27. Three days later he left for a 53-man spot elsewhere. 49ers Webzone dated his return Oct. 24. The club's release has him let go that day and signed back Oct. 27.

The count. The practice squad limit is 16 players plus one international exemption, which is Isaac Alarcon's spot. With Givens gone the squad holds 16, so one regular spot is open. The active roster is still 53 of 53.

Four defensive linemen remain on the practice squad: Viliami Fehoko Jr., Naquan Jones, Ogbo Okoronkwo and McKinnley Jackson. Three of them, Fehoko, Jones and Okoronkwo, were released or waived from the 53 in October and signed back to the practice squad within three days each time, per the club's releases. The active roster carries 10 defensive linemen, Buckner included.

Bosa, per Lynch. John Lynch told Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area that getting injured players back will shape any move before the Nov. 10 trade deadline, as quoted by 49ers Webzone on Friday.

"We're hopeful that we'll get Nick Bosa back after the bye," Lynch said. "Obviously, that's a game changer for you. That affects our entire team, let alone our defensive line."

Bosa has missed games with knee and calf injuries and was on the list of eight players Kyle Shanahan said on Oct. 26 had a chance to return after the bye. He never left the 53, so his return costs no roster spot.

Lynch did not rule out another trade, and did not promise one. "Do we need to do anything, because we've got a pretty darn good team?" he said, and later: "And next year's draft is real important, too."

Next. The 49ers are off this week and play Las Vegas at Levi's Stadium on Nov. 8. Demarcus Robinson and C.J. West, the two names on Shanahan's list who are on injured reserve, each still need a spot on the 53. The open practice squad spot is not one they can use.

Shanahan names eight injured 49ers who could return after the bye

Kyle Shanahan said Monday that Christian McCaffrey has a mild hamstring strain, first believed to be a thigh injury, and that the club is optimistic about him after the bye. He named eight injured players, Nick Bosa and Mike Evans among them, with a chance to return for Las Vegas on Nov. 8. Two of the eight are on injured reserve, and the active roster is full at 53. John Lynch said Tuesday the 49ers will keep Eddy Pineiro, whose three missed field goals this season all came from 50 yards or longer.

The 49ers outgained Atlanta by 105 yards and never hit its quarterback

San Francisco outgained Atlanta 400 yards to 295 on Sunday, its widest yardage margin of the season, and lost 29-20 for the first time in seven games. Four 49ers drives reached the Atlanta 28 or closer and scored nothing: two fumbles, an interception and a turnover on downs. The defense held Atlanta to 4.7 yards a play and 2.8 a carry, and the official game book credits it with no sack, no quarterback hit, no pass defensed and no takeaway, the first game this season with none of the four. Atlanta's season has turned on exactly that: in Penix's five starts the Falcons won the three in which their passers were hit once or not at all and lost the two in which they were hit six times. Since Nick Bosa last played, in Week 2, the 49ers have had two games of eight or more hits and three of five or fewer. Shanahan named the defensive line as an injury spot the club will look at before the Nov. 10 trade deadline, and said Bosa has a chance to return after the bye.

Kirk is activated, and the 49ers will dress exactly 48 at Atlanta

The 49ers activated wide receiver Christian Kirk off injured reserve Saturday, re-signed defensive lineman Ogbo Okoronkwo to the practice squad a day after releasing him, released Kevin Givens from the practice squad and elevated Okoronkwo and linebacker Jalen Graham for Sunday at Atlanta. The club's active list now carries 54 names, six of them ruled out, which leaves exactly the 48 a team may dress if questionable corners Siran Neal and Upton Stout play. The NFL also fined Fred Warner $65,673 for two fourth-quarter hits against Washington.

The 49ers kept Nick Bosa on the 53-man roster on Saturday and placed receiver Demarcus Robinson on injured reserve. Defensive lineman Viliami Fehoko Jr. was promoted from the practice squad into Robinson's spot, and defensive linemen Kevin Givens and Sebastian Valdez were elevated for Sunday's game against Arizona. Matt Judon was among four free agents who worked out for the club. Brandin Cooks was not elevated, and Jordan Watkins is expected to make his season debut.

Nobody San Francisco Added Thursday Plays Defensive Tackle

San Francisco placed DL Alfred Collins on injured reserve and activated WR KhaDarel Hodge and DL Ogbo Okoronkwo from its practice squad as standard elevations, all three moves in one release published at 1:53 p.m. Pacific on Thursday, three hours and forty-two minutes before the season opener against the Los Angeles Rams at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Hodge and Okoronkwo revert to the practice squad after the game, and a standard elevation is capped at three per player per season. Neither plays defensive tackle. The club's depth chart, stamped September 8 and labelled unofficial, lists four men at the two tackle spots: Osa Odighizuwa at 280 pounds and C.J. West at 316 on the left, Collins and then rookies Gracen Halton at 293 and James Thompson Jr. at 308 on the right. Thompson was Questionable with a hamstring, the only game designation San Francisco issued for the opener. The inactive lists resolved it: six San Francisco names, none of them a defensive lineman, and Thompson dresses. That leaves right defensive tackle to two rookies. The report the club distributed at 12:23 a.m. Pacific has Halton at full participation for the last Melbourne practice; the table on the club's own injury-report page, read at 2:51 p.m., still showed him limited and left his injury column blank. The practice squad holds three defensive linemen heavier than Okoronkwo's 253 pounds, including Kevin Givens, the man the club waived on August 5 to sign Hodge and Okoronkwo. Counted in a browser at 2:53 p.m. Pacific, the roster page carried 54 on Active, 12 on injured reserve, two on Reserve/Physically Unable to Perform and 15 on the practice squad, which puts 52 players on a roster that may hold 53. The Active table held eight defensive linemen. The transaction log still ended on September 5. One take filed.

On the record

Called Shots →
MissedJul 29, 2026

Between July 29, 2026 and the 49ers' Week 1 game on September 10, 2026, San Francisco does not add a defensive end or outside linebacker who has more than 10 career regular-season sacks, by any means: free-agent signing, trade or waiver claim. K.J. Henry and Quinton Bell, reported July 28, do not falsify this and are not counted.

Filed off the tracker's own open row, which has carried a placeholder for a veteran edge addition since the board was built. The 49ers finished last in the NFL in sacks with 20, carry the most cap space in the league, north of $70 million (OverTheCap has published $71.2m and $72.0m on different dates this offseason and this desk's own Jul 26 log carried $70.7m, so the figure is stated as a floor rather than a point), have Nick Bosa on a ramp and Mykel Williams on active PUP, and answered a thin week at the position by working out four defenders and signing two of them with 3.5 career sacks between them. That is the evidence for the call. Against it: Lynch's 'too expensive' on Joey Bosa is a month old and cap space does not expire, and every year the cutdown puts real veteran rushers on the street at the exact moment a team learns what its edge room is. This is not a formality in either direction.

The books have Brock Purdy's MVP place right and his price wrong

DraftKings and Caesars have Brock Purdy at plus 350 to win the MVP, second behind Josh Allen. Kalshi has Purdy at 15 cents bid, 16 asked, third behind Joe Burrow, after one Sunday moved the two quarterbacks about ten cents in opposite directions. Against the exchange's midpoint, a $100 Purdy ticket at plus 350 gives up $30.25, the Allen ticket at DraftKings gives up $17.65 and the Burrow ticket gives up $3.75. The 49ers' Super Bowl price carries no such markup. Purdy has the better case than Burrow and a worse price than either.

Robinson and West could return after the bye to a 49ers 53 with no room

Kyle Shanahan named eight 49ers with a chance to return after the bye. Six are already on the 53-man roster. Two, wide receiver Demarcus Robinson and defensive lineman C.J. West, are on injured reserve, and each needs a roster spot that does not exist yet. The club's roster page on Thursday listed 53 active players, 14 on injured reserve, one on PUP and 17 on the practice squad. Of the six players released or waived from the 53 in October, four were defensive linemen, and three of those men are back on the practice squad.

DeForest Buckner has written two goodbyes, and the second one apologized

DeForest Buckner, born in Waianae, Hawaii, and drafted seventh overall by San Francisco in 2016, started all 63 games he played for the 49ers and was traded to Indianapolis for the 13th pick in March 2020, weeks after Super Bowl LIV. He played 95 games for the Colts, who reached the playoffs once in that time and lost at Buffalo. He came back from neck surgery for the 2026 season, and on October 27 the Colts, 2-5, traded him back to San Francisco for a 2027 fourth-round pick. His farewell to Indianapolis, posted October 28, ends with an apology.

San Francisco Promoted A Fourth Tight End And Worked Out Three More

San Francisco promoted tight end Brayden Willis from the practice squad to the active roster on Tuesday morning and signed defensive lineman McKinnley Jackson to the practice squad. The promotion fills the roster spot Alfred Collins vacated on September 10 and puts the active roster back at 53. Hours later the NFL's transaction report showed the club had worked out five players, three of them tight ends. Jake Tonges, who played eight snaps in Melbourne before he was hurt, remains on the active roster with no injury designation and no published imaging result, and the club's Week 2 injury report does not exist yet. Willis has played 23 regular-season games, all with the 49ers, and has no career receptions.
