Shanahan names eight injured 49ers who could return after the bye
Christian McCaffrey's injury is a mild hamstring strain, not the thigh, and the club is optimistic. John Lynch said Tuesday there is no kicker tryout.

The 49ers start their bye at 6-1 with the injury list rewritten. Kyle Shanahan held his Monday call with reporters after the 29-20 loss at Atlanta, and the club published his updates that evening. John Lynch followed on KNBR on Tuesday morning. Here is what the two of them put on the record.
McCaffrey's thigh is a hamstring. Christian McCaffrey has a mild hamstring strain, Shanahan said. The club's own account says the injury "was initially believed to involve his thigh" before further evaluation. On McCaffrey's availability after the bye: "We're pretty optimistic about it. So is he." Neither man gave a timeline.
Eight names with a chance for Las Vegas. Shanahan listed Nick Bosa, Mike Evans, Luke Gifford, Deebo Samuel Sr., Marques Sigle, Garret Wallow, Demarcus Robinson and C.J. West as players who could return after the break. He guaranteed none of them. "Big week of rehab for all of them, and we'll see where they're at next week at the beginning of the week," he said. Six of the eight were inactive at Atlanta. The 49ers' next game is Las Vegas on Nov. 8.
The math on the two who are not on the 53. Robinson and West are on injured reserve, and the club's roster page on Tuesday listed exactly 53 on the active roster. Each of them needs a roster spot to come back. If both return for Las Vegas, two players currently on the 53 come off it, by release, waiver or a reserve list.
Three more timelines. Upton Stout should return to full participation after the bye, Shanahan said, after several weeks with a shoulder injury. De'Zhaun Stribling (ankle) remains on track for a possible December return. Sam Okuayinonu (foot) is still working toward January, with no reported setback.
No kicker tryout. "We don't have a kicker tryout," Lynch said on KNBR, as quoted by Kyle Posey of Niners Nation. "We have a lot of belief in Eddy. He has had a tough run early this year." Eddy Pineiro is 6 of 9 on field goals and 21 of 25 on extra points through seven games, per his ESPN season line. All three missed field goals came from 50 yards or longer, where he is 2 of 5. From inside 50 he is 4 of 4. Last season he made 28 of 29 field goals, which is the body of work Lynch cited.
Fourth-and-10 was not about the kicker. After Jordan Watkins' touchdown was overturned at Atlanta, the 49ers went for it on fourth-and-10 rather than try a 41-yard field goal. Shanahan said Monday the kicker played no part. "I didn't think a field goal was going to change much," he said. "I also thought we could get that first down. So no, the kicking situation didn't have anything to do with it. I thought we needed to go for it. I thought we needed two touchdowns."
Kirk, graded by his coach. Christian Kirk did not catch a pass in his season debut. Shanahan liked the film anyway. "I thought he did a good job in separating and running his routes right. I thought he played really well in the run game too," he said.
The two touchdowns. Shanahan said McCaffrey's leap over the goal line was not a called play. "We don't call the jump or anything like that," he said. Kaelon Black's 30-yard run, his first NFL touchdown, came after Watkins got to the corner and blocked "the only guy available," Shanahan said.
The deadline, on the record. The trade deadline is Tuesday, Nov. 10, at 1 p.m. Pacific. Shanahan named receiver and the defensive line as the two positions the injuries hit hardest, and said getting players back at both does not rule out a move. Inside the division, the Seahawks announced a trade on Tuesday with Indianapolis for guard Quenton Nelson, pending a physical.
Transactions. Jalen Graham and Ogbo Okoronkwo, elevated for Atlanta, are back on the practice squad, where the club's roster page listed both Tuesday. The club has announced no move since Oct. 24, and the league's transaction wire shows none for the 49ers through Tuesday afternoon.
