Nobody San Francisco Added Thursday Plays Defensive Tackle

Alfred Collins went on injured reserve three hours and forty-two minutes before kickoff at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. KhaDarel Hodge and Ogbo Okoronkwo came up from the practice squad for the game, and neither of them plays inside. The inactive lists went out ninety minutes before kickoff with six San Francisco names on them and no defensive lineman among the six, so the four men left at the two tackle spots all dress: Osa Odighizuwa, C.J. West, and two rookies at the position the club lost.

Every call on this site goes on a public ledger and gets graded. The misses stay up.
Alfred Collins in a white 49ers jersey with red numerals, 95 on the chest, walking a fenced concrete corridor toward the stadium with his helmet in one hand and a brace on his left knee. Shot on a fisheye lens. An undated club photograph from Santa Clara, not from Melbourne and not from this week.

Alfred Collins is on injured reserve. The two men San Francisco added for its season opener are KhaDarel Hodge, a receiver, and Ogbo Okoronkwo, a pass rusher who lines up on the edge.

All three moves came in one release at 1:53 p.m. Pacific on Thursday, three hours and forty-two minutes before kickoff at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. The club used its own words for both halves. "The following player has been placed on the Injured Reserve List: DL Alfred Collins." Then: "The following players have been activated from the team's practice squad (standard elevations): WR KhaDarel Hodge, DL Ogbo Okoronkwo." Both elevated men go back to the practice squad when the game ends.

Collins tore a patellar tendon at a Melbourne practice this week, and Kyle Shanahan said his season is over. What Thursday afternoon produced was a roster spot. On the club's roster page at 2:53 p.m. Pacific, San Francisco had not spent it on a defensive tackle, or on anybody else.

What is left at right defensive tackle#

The club's depth chart on its website is stamped September 8, labelled unofficial, and puts four players at the two defensive tackle positions. Osa Odighizuwa, 280 pounds, is first on the left and C.J. West, 316 pounds, is second. Collins is still listed first on the right. Gracen Halton, a rookie at 293 pounds, is second there, and James Thompson Jr., an undrafted rookie at 308, is third.

Of those three men on the right, one is on injured reserve, one spent the week Questionable, and one is Gracen Halton.

Thompson is the one who was Questionable, hamstring, and his was the only game designation San Francisco issued this week. He did not practise at all on the first Melbourne day and was limited on the two that followed, which is the movement that showed up on Wednesday's report. A Questionable tag is a probability the club has published rather than a decision it has made, and the club resolves it when the inactives go out.

They went out ninety minutes before kickoff. Read at 4:52 p.m. Pacific, San Francisco's list runs six names, and it is quarterback Kurtis Rourke, cornerback Ephesians Prysock, running back Jordan James, receiver Jordan Watkins, linebacker Tatum Bethune and offensive tackle Enrique Cruz. No defensive lineman is on it. Thompson dresses.

So the club goes into the opener with all four of the men its own chart lists inside, minus the one it lost. Odighizuwa and West on the left. Halton and Thompson on the right, both rookies, one of them undrafted, at the position San Francisco had a starter at on Tuesday.

Halton is the one nobody has flagged. He was limited with an ankle earlier in the week, and the participation report the club distributed at 12:23 a.m. Pacific on Thursday has him at full participation for the last Melbourne session. The table on the club's own injury-report page tells it differently. Read at 2:51 p.m. Pacific, that table still lists Halton as limited on both of the two practice days it carries a value for, and the injury column beside his name is blank. The report the club hands out and the page the club publishes are not the same document, and the report is the one with a body part next to every name.

The practice squad has bigger men on it#

San Francisco keeps three defensive linemen on its practice squad: Vincent Anthony Jr. at 260 pounds, Kevin Givens at 285 and Sebastian Valdez at 301. Okoronkwo, the one who got the call, is listed at 253.

Givens has been through this door before. On August 5 the 49ers signed Hodge and Okoronkwo to one-year deals and waived Givens to make the room, per the club's own transaction log. Givens came back to the practice squad on September 1. Five weeks on, the same two names came up for the opener and his did not.

The elevation door does not stay open forever, either. A standard elevation returns the player to the practice squad after the game and a club may use one on the same player three times in a season. Three games is not a plan for a season; it is a way of not deciding yet.

The count#

Counted name by name in a browser at 2:53 p.m. Pacific, the roster page carries 54 players on Active, 12 on Reserve/Injured, two on Reserve/Physically Unable to Perform and 15 on the practice squad. Two of the 54 are Hodge and Okoronkwo, and they are there for one game. That is 52 players signed to a roster allowed to hold 53, with a spot open and a starting defensive tackle gone for the year.

Eight of the 54 are defensive linemen: Nick Bosa, Gracen Halton, Romello Height, Khalid Kareem, Osa Odighizuwa, James Thompson Jr., C.J. West and Keion White, plus Okoronkwo for the night. Four of the eight play inside.

The club's transaction log, read at 2:54 p.m., still ends on September 5 with the long-snapper promotion. None of Thursday's three moves has reached it.

Collins is listed at 332 pounds, and nobody on San Francisco's roster is heavier. The heaviest defensive lineman left is C.J. West, at 316.

San Francisco Has Told You George Kittle Plays. It Has Not Told You How Much Of Him You Get.

San Francisco's Week 1 injury report, read live at 49ers.com and again at therams.com on Thursday morning Pacific, carries eleven San Francisco names and two designations. Alfred Collins, listed at defensive line with a knee, is Out; the club's own item says he tore a patellar tendon and will miss the 2026 season. James Thompson Jr., hamstring, is Questionable after going from did not participate to limited. The other nine, including Nick Bosa, Kyle Juszczyk, Dre Greenlaw and George Kittle, carry no game designation, and Upton Stout is the only full participant on the page. Kittle is limited on every practice day the report carries a value for, with no designation, on an Achilles tendon he tore on January 11. The grid's Monday column is empty on all eighteen rows across both clubs, while the club's own news item describes three Melbourne practices. The Rams' half has filled since Wednesday: Aaron Donald is Out, listed not injury related and resting, and the other six Los Angeles names carry the dash the legend defines as not listed. Kyle Shanahan on Bosa and Kittle: 'We've got to be smart with that.' Kickoff is 5:35 p.m. Pacific at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. One take filed.

Aaron Donald Did Not Travel And Myles Garrett Did

San Francisco plays Los Angeles at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Thursday, 5:35 p.m. Pacific, on Netflix. Alfred Collins tore his patellar tendon at the second Melbourne practice and is out for the season, the only San Francisco player on the final Week 1 report carrying a game designation apart from James Thompson Jr., who is questionable with a hamstring. Nick Bosa and George Kittle carry no designation at all. On the Rams sheet Aaron Donald is out and did not travel, and Myles Garrett went from not practising to full participation and plays.

Seven Of San Francisco's Nine Rookies Are Listed Second At A Position For The Opener

San Francisco opens the 2026 season against Los Angeles at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Thursday at 5:35 p.m. Pacific, 10:35 a.m. Friday in Melbourne, on Netflix, with radio on KSFO 810 AM and KSAN 107.7 FM. The club's roster page, counted in a browser on Thursday morning, carries 53 active players and exactly nine rookies. Seven of those nine are listed second at a position on the club's own website depth chart, stamped September 8 and labelled unofficial; the other two are listed third. None is listed first. The club's final injury report, published at 12:23 a.m. Pacific Thursday, issued two game designations: DL Alfred Collins out with a knee, which Kyle Shanahan said is a torn patellar tendon that ends his season, and rookie DL James Thompson Jr. questionable with a hamstring. Nick Bosa, knee, and George Kittle, achilles, were limited at all three Melbourne practices and carry no designation. Shanahan on the two of them: 'We've got to be smart with that. They both look great but we've definitely got to be smart with that.' Bosa said he is '100 percent ready to go for the first game.' Luke Gifford, Renardo Green, Dre Greenlaw, Gracen Halton and Romello Height all progressed to full participation at the last practice. Kyle Juszczyk stayed limited with a finger. Los Angeles ruled out Aaron Donald, filed under rest. Inactives land 90 minutes before kickoff. Ten players to watch, and the club's own chart still lists two men who cannot play.

The Two Names That Moved On Wednesday's Injury Report Both Play Right Defensive Tackle

San Francisco's second injury report of Week 1, distributed by the club's communications staff and published by David Bonilla at 49ers Webzone at about 2:57 p.m. Pacific on Wednesday, carries the same eleven San Francisco names as Tuesday's and moves exactly two of them. Alfred Collins goes from limited participation to did not participate, filed under a knee; Kyle Shanahan said this week that Collins tore a patellar tendon and is out for the year. James Thompson Jr. goes from did not participate to limited, and Shanahan had said before the last practice that Thompson's availability would be settled by how that session went, per Patrick Holloway and Kyle Posey at Niners Nation. The two men are first and third at right defensive tackle on the club's own chart. Nick Bosa, limited on both reports, said after the final full practice that he is '100% ready to go' and that he had not yet talked to defensive line coach Kris Kocurek about a snap limit. George Kittle, also limited both days, said his body feels good and that he does not know his workload. Shanahan said the club has to be smart with both, and called Christian McCaffrey 'Awesome. Ready to go.' Bonilla writes that San Francisco held no full practice on Wednesday and had a walk-through scheduled. On the Rams' side everyone but Aaron Donald improved: Myles Garrett went from did not participate to full. Neither the distributed report as published nor the club's own injury report page, read at 3:04 p.m. and again at 4:52 p.m. Pacific, carries a game status for anybody. On the roster page nothing was processed: 53 active, 17 practice squad, 11 on injured reserve, 2 on Active/PUP, Collins still on the Active table.

Alfred Collins Is Out For The Year And His Replacement Is Whoever Is Already In Australia

Alfred Collins tore his patellar tendon at San Francisco's second Melbourne practice and is out for the 2026 season, per head coach Kyle Shanahan, reported by Matt Maiocco at NBC Sports Bay Area, Nick Wagoner at ESPN and David Bonilla at 49ers Webzone. He was the club's projected starting right defensive tackle. The club's own unofficial depth chart, stamped September 8 and read on Wednesday morning, still lists Collins first at that position, and lists Gracen Halton and James Thompson Jr. behind him. The club's roster page gives both men an R in its experience column, and both appear on the Week 1 practice participation report the club distributed Tuesday: Halton limited with an ankle, Thompson the only man who did not practice at all, with a hamstring. Asked who replaces Collins, Shanahan said any defensive lineman is a possibility unless reporters could name someone the club could fly to Australia quickly. Collins was still on the club's active roster when it was read Wednesday morning, and the club's transaction page carried no injured-reserve move for him, its newest entry being September 5, so the move reported as coming had not happened. Sam Okuayinonu, the other defensive lineman lost, went on injured reserve on September 4 with a broken foot. Collins went 43rd overall in 2025 and played 16 games as a rookie with one start; Maiocco and Bonilla both give the rest of that season as 17 tackles, one sack and two forced fumbles. One take filed.

Alfred Collins Is Named Once In The Entire Play-By-Play

The film-and-grades read of San Francisco's 18-12 win at Las Vegas on Thursday, player by player. Alfred Collins played 29 of 66 defensive snaps and appears once in the game book's play-by-play, on an assisted tackle. PFF's four lowest-graded 49ers defenders in the game all played defensive tackle, and both San Francisco sacks came from edge men. Enrique Cruz Jr. played all 61 offensive snaps at left tackle. Carver Willis graded last among the 22 San Francisco offensive players PFF graded, and the split behind it is run blocking rather than pass protection, which is what Willis himself has said the problem is. Khalil Herbert graded highest on offense on 12 snaps. Darrell Luter Jr. started at corner, played 51 snaps and graded second among all San Francisco defenders.

Held upJul 29, 2026

Kaelon Black is on the San Francisco 49ers' initial 53-man roster as announced at the August 30, 2026 mandatory cut. Scored off the initial 53 only: the practice squad is a miss, a later signing or elevation after the initial roster is a miss, and being placed on injured reserve from the initial 53 counts as a hit.

Black is a rookie running back whose Wednesday workload increased because Jordan James fractured a rib, which is the most fragile possible reason to be getting reps. If James is back before cut day the reps go with him. Against the call: the 49ers carried McCaffrey plus a thin room behind him, and a back who has taken first-team-adjacent work in camp is usually kept over a body they would have to teach. This resolves in 32 days and it is genuinely close.
