De'Zhaun Stribling Is Out At Least A Month, And Injured Reserve Would Cost At Most One Game More

De'Zhaun Stribling has a deltoid sprain in his ankle and is out at least a month. The rookie is still seeking opinions, and surgery is possible without being planned. Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reported all of it on Sunday morning; Jeremy Bergman carried it at NFL.com, and Marc Adams carried it at 49ers Webzone, where the ligament is identified as the one on the inside of the ankle.

The 33rd pick in April was San Francisco's first selection of that draft, and he was hurt in the first quarter of his first professional game. He is twenty-three, which makes him the youngest receiver the club dressed in Melbourne.

That is a report and not a transaction. San Francisco has filed nothing on it. The club's transaction log, read at 4:50 p.m. Pacific on Sunday, still ends on September 10 with the Alfred Collins placement and the two elevations for Melbourne. Stribling was on the Active table at the same minute. The club's newsroom, read a minute later, has published nothing since the pregame items for the Rams game.

So the decision is still in front of the 49ers rather than behind them, and it is worth being exact about what it costs, because the answer is smaller than the designation sounds.

Three of the four games are gone either way#

A player placed on injured reserve during the season must miss a minimum of four games and may not practise during them. San Francisco has played one game. The next four are Miami at Levi's Stadium on Sunday, September 20, Arizona at Levi's on Sunday, September 27, Denver at Levi's on Sunday, October 4, and Seattle at Lumen Field on Sunday, October 11. Put Stribling on the list this week and those are the four. The first game he could play would be Washington at Levi's on Monday, October 19, thirty-nine days after the injury.

Now take the report at its own word and skip the designation. A month from September 10 is Saturday, October 10. Miami is ten days after the injury, Arizona seventeen, Denver twenty-four. All three are inside the month, and all three are gone whether the club files anything or not.

That leaves Seattle. October 11 is thirty-one days after the injury, which is the first date on the schedule that the phrase "at least a month" does not already rule out. Injured reserve rules it out. Everything else on the calendar reads the same under both paths.

That answer turns on where the month is measured from, and the other end is worth stating. Rapoport's report is dated Sunday, September 13. A month from the report is October 13, which falls after the Seattle game rather than before it, and on that reading Seattle is gone too and the designation costs nothing. The count above starts at the injury because a recovery window is ordinarily quoted from the day of the injury rather than the day it is reported. Both readings arrive at the same size of answer. Filing costs San Francisco one game or it costs none.

One game at the outside, then, and a roster spot gone for four of them and better than a month in exchange. Collins has been on injured reserve since September 10 and his spot is still open. The club has signed nobody in the three days since.

Kirk is eligible for the same game#

Christian Kirk went on injured reserve on Sunday, August 30, with a designation to return, after straining a calf at practice on July 26. Four games is four games: the earliest he can be activated is that Seattle game on October 11.

The receiver San Francisco signed this offseason becomes available for the one game the Stribling decision turns on. If the club wants a body in the room by the middle of October, it has one arriving on the same weekend by a different door, and it does not have to spend a roster spot to get him.

Ricky Pearsall is a separate case and a closed one. The club placed him on injured reserve on August 1, and John Lynch said that day that he would have season-ending surgery on the PCL in his knee. There is no return date to price.

Wednesday is the first document#

Kyle Shanahan's only on-the-record words about this ankle are still the ones he gave in Melbourne on September 10, when he said the Achilles had been checked and was intact and that the club was not sure of the magnitude. Nothing from the building has been added since.

That changes on Wednesday. Nick Avila of NBC Sports Bay Area reported on September 8 that the players would not practise until then, five days between the Thursday night game and the first practice at home. An injury report is a by-product of a practice. Wednesday, September 16 is the first document San Francisco has to produce that says a word about Stribling's ankle, and it will say it six days after he was hurt.

The room, named#

Behind Stribling, five receivers are signed to the active roster: Mike Evans, Demarcus Robinson, Deebo Samuel, Jacob Cowing and Jordan Watkins. Evans is thirty-three, Robinson thirty-one and Samuel thirty, off the club's own roster table. Cowing is twenty-five and Watkins twenty-four.

Watkins did not dress in Melbourne. The club's own inactive list for the opener carries him alongside Kurtis Rourke, Ephesians Prysock, Jordan James, Tatum Bethune and Enrique Cruz Jr. KhaDarel Hodge played that night on a standard elevation from the practice squad, which is the club's own wording in its September 10 release, and he reverts when the elevation expires.

Below that the practice squad carries two more, both rookies on the club's own experience column, Wesley Grimes out of N.C. State and Will Pauling out of Notre Dame. Neither was elevated for the opener.

So the club's decision this week is about the youngest receiver it dressed in Melbourne. The next youngest did not dress.
