Activating George Kittle Ended The 49ers' Four-Game Option On Him

The 49ers activated their tight end from the physically unable to perform list at 10:02 on Sunday morning, seven months after the Achilles and seven days before the roster comes to 53. The move is not a promise that he plays in Melbourne. It is a decision that he will not be made to miss the first four games.

Every call on this site goes on a public ledger and gets graded. The misses stay up.

George Kittle is off the physically unable to perform list. San Francisco announced it at 10:02 a.m. Pacific on Sunday, on the club's own account and not to its newsroom index, which is where it still was not four hours later.

The club's roster page carries the same thing in a shorter form. Read on Sunday afternoon, the active physically-unable-to-perform table holds two names, Isaac Guerendo and Mykel Williams. It held four on July 25. Kittle and Alfred Collins are off it.

What the activation does is close a door, and the door is worth more than the practice reps. The league's own training camp rules say a player can be removed from the active PUP list at any point in camp and cannot be put back on it. A player still sitting on that list when rosters come to 53 can be moved to reserve/PUP, and a player moved to reserve/PUP has to miss at least the team's first four games. Kittle is now ineligible for that list for the rest of this season. He was ineligible the moment San Francisco filed the paperwork, before he ran a single route.

So the four games are no longer available to be spent. Those four are the Rams in Melbourne on September 10, then Miami, Arizona and Denver.

None of that is the same as saying he plays in Melbourne. Activation makes a player eligible to practice and nothing else. Matt Maiocco, writing for NBC Sports Bay Area fifteen minutes after the club's announcement, reported that Kittle was likely to take part in individual drills on Sunday and that whether he would be in any of the team's 11-on-11 periods was unknown. Those are two different things and the second one is the one that matters.

The injury is seven months old and the surgery is three days younger than that. Kittle tore his right Achilles tendon against Philadelphia in the first round of the playoffs on January 11 and had it repaired three days later. He is a seven-time Pro Bowl selection and he has not played a competitive snap since the tear.

Asked by NBC Sports Bay Area last week whether he was confident he would not open the season on the list, Kittle said: "Very confident. Sooner than later." On the opener itself he was looser. "I have a chance," he said. "We're running around a lot, hitting top speeds. Hopefully, we're back in pads practicing sooner than later. Just trying to check the boxes and not be a dumbass."

The roster consequence lands on August 30, which is seven days out. A player on reserve/PUP does not count against the 53. Kittle now does. San Francisco has spent a spot it had the option of keeping, and it spent it on a tight end who cannot be ruled in for Week 1 yet, which is the trade the club decided was worth making on a Sunday in August rather than on the Saturday of cut weekend.

It also changes the arithmetic on the two men still on the list. Four players went onto active PUP on July 25. Two of them, Kittle and Collins, are now off it and cannot return to it. Collins started at defensive line in the game book at the Chargers on August 20, so his has been settled for a while. That leaves Guerendo and Williams as the only two men San Francisco can still put on reserve/PUP, and the open Called Shot that at least two of the four would be there on August 30 now needs both of them to land there. It has gone from a four-man proposition to a two-for-two.

The flight is the real deadline and it is earlier than the game. San Francisco is scheduled to fly to Australia on September 2, eight days before kickoff, to get a week of acclimatisation. Kittle has said it makes sense for the club to settle his status before that plane leaves so he can skip the trip if he is not going to play in it. That puts a decision the club would normally make on a Wednesday injury report into the last week of August instead.

Christian McCaffrey returned to practice on Sunday as well, and Maiocco filed on the pair of them together in the hour after the activation. McCaffrey was not on any list. He was just out.

The preseason finale is Thursday at Las Vegas. Between now and the cutdown there are two practices' worth of published reports, one exhibition nobody expects Kittle to be near, and a paperwork deadline the club has already answered one of the harder questions on.

Kyle Juszczyk will miss a few weeks and the 49ers have no other fullback

Kyle Shanahan said Monday that Kyle Juszczyk has a hyperextended knee and a bone bruise and will miss a few weeks, that Marques Sigle has a high ankle sprain, and that Upton Stout is day to day with a sprained AC joint. Brayden Willis, Luke Farrell and George Kittle share the fullback's work. Nick Bosa and James Thompson Jr. are probably out again at Seattle; Mykel Williams could be activated.

Week 4 takeaways: three points in seven drives, then Siran Neal forced a fumble

San Francisco is 4-0 after a 24-14 win over Denver. It was 3-3 at halftime and the 49ers had punted four times, been stopped on fourth down and had a field goal blocked before Siran Neal forced and recovered a fumble on a punt return at the Denver 28. Touchdowns followed on three straight possessions, the last a 56-yard George Kittle catch and run with 2:15 left. Purdy was 19 of 30 for 218 yards and two touchdowns and was not sacked for the fourth straight game. Mike Evans played 39 of 66 snaps with a rib injury and led the team with 76 receiving yards. Kyle Juszczyk (knee), Upton Stout (shoulder) and Marques Sigle (ankle) were hurt, and none has a diagnosis.

Week 3 takeaways: Arizona had the ball for 38 minutes and never led

San Francisco is 3-0 after a 36-30 win over Arizona. The 49ers led from the 8:26 mark of the first quarter to the end while running 50 offensive plays to Arizona's 81, and averaged 8.7 yards a play to Arizona's 4.5. Purdy was 15 of 27 for 297 yards, four touchdowns, no interception and no sack. Kittle caught both fourth-quarter touchdowns, the second two snaps after his own holding penalty wiped out a 45-yard Purdy touchdown run. Jordan Watkins caught two passes for 60 yards in his first game of the season. The defense was on the field for 87 snaps with nine linemen dressed. Evans (rib or oblique) and Trent Williams (stinger) left and did not return; Greenlaw left with a quad.

At least two of the four players placed on active/PUP on July 25, 2026 (George Kittle, Mykel Williams, Alfred Collins, Isaac Guerendo) are on the reserve/PUP list when the 49ers set their 53-man roster on August 30, 2026.

Reserve/PUP carries a four-game minimum absence, so this is the conversion that costs real games rather than practice reps. Scoreable from the team's transactions log on August 30.

Mykel Williams says he is ready to play Seattle after a year away

Mykel Williams, back from a torn ACL, was limited Wednesday and told reporters he is ready to play. The 49ers opened his practice window Sept. 30 and must activate him by Oct. 21; the 53 is full, so activating him takes a move. Nick Bosa, James Thompson Jr., Kyle Juszczyk, Marques Sigle and Upton Stout did not practice. Xavier Smith joined the practice squad and Dante Pettis went on practice squad injured reserve.

Denver built Sunday's zero. The hits that left with Bosa were Odighizuwa's

San Francisco did not sack Bo Nix in Sunday's 24-14 win over Denver and hit him twice, both in the fourth quarter. The zero was mostly Denver's design: Nix threw 36 of 42 passes short, Denver had allowed five sacks in three games, and the 49ers' own priority was keeping Nix in the pocket, which held him to two scrambles. The season numbers say something else. With Nick Bosa the 49ers were credited with 13 quarterback hits on 55 opponent pass plays; without him, 7 on 96. Bosa had one of the 13. Osa Odighizuwa had five, and he has had none since Bosa got hurt. Bosa is not expected back for Seattle.

Nick Bosa, James Thompson Jr. and Mykel Williams are out. Mike Evans, Dre Greenlaw, Keion White and Jaden Dugger are questionable. Matthew Judon and Malik Turner were elevated Saturday and Sebastian Valdez was promoted to the 53. Ten men to watch.

Fred Warner Is The 49ers' Career Tackle Leader, On The Column That Counts Assists

Fred Warner became San Francisco's all-time leading tackler in the second quarter of the season opener in Melbourne, passing Patrick Willis, who held the franchise record at 950. Warner entered the season at 948 and finished the game at 959 in 122 games. The record is kept on combined tackles, solo plus assisted, and on solo tackles alone Willis still leads him 733 to 602. Kyle Shanahan gave an MCL for Jake Tonges and an ankle for De'Zhaun Stribling with no timetable on either, and the club has filed no transaction on either man.

Left Guard Is An Open Competition Everywhere Except In The Reps

The 49ers held their 10th full training camp practice on Monday. Robert Jones worked with the first-team offensive line at left guard, Connor Colby stayed at second-team right guard, and offensive coordinator Klay Kubiak called the job a competition anyway. Christian McCaffrey was given the day off with tightness, leaving Patrick Taylor Jr., Sincere McCormick and Khalil Herbert as the only healthy running backs, and the club worked out two more. Brock Purdy went 10 of 13. Nick Bosa missed a fourth straight practice.

The Patch Says Est. 1946. You Can Still Walk Into The Building It Means.

The 49ers launched an eightieth-anniversary campaign in April, narrated by Jerry Rice, and the patch reads 80 over Est. 1946. An anniversary measures distance from a beginning. This one is measuring from an address in Golden Gate Park, forty miles from where the jersey will be worn, and the question underneath the number is who gets to hold eighty years when only one party to them owns anything.
