The process grade, and why

Six picks entering and no single obvious need after free agency, with receiver and tackle the ones named (NBC Sports Bay Area, 2026-04-23). Fewer than 20 players carried first-round grades and the list ran out before 27, so the club moved 27 and 138 to Miami for 30 and 90, then 30 to the Jets for 33 and 179, and said the players it wanted at 30 were still there at 33 (49ers Webzone, 2026-04-23; CBS San Francisco, 2026-04-24). Three more trades, Dee Winters for 152 among them, turned six picks into eight and a 2027 sixth (Furtado, SF Chronicle, 2026-04-24). The trades were called wise; the selections were contested, Stribling at 33 over Denzel Boston and Kaelon Black at 90 named as reaches, Height and Halton as value (Reuter, NFL.com, 2026-04-25; Prisco, CBS Sports, 2026-04-27). The process grade, and why

The March exodus left the defensive line as the need, with Banks, Ward, Greenlaw and Hufanga gone after a 6-11 season that allowed the second-most rushing touchdowns (Branch and Furtado, SF Chronicle, 2025-04-25). The club tried to move up from 11 for Mykel Williams, was refused, and used all 11 picks it held (Maiocco, NBC Sports Bay Area, 2025-04-24). Direction was praised: five defenders first, the first time since 1981 (Branch, SF Chronicle, 2025-04-27). Value was not. Williams and Collins drew questions on pass-rush production and sat about a round lower on PFF's board, and Martin at 75 and Stout at 100 were called reaches (PFF, 2025-04-26; 49ers Webzone roundup, 2025-04-27; Trapasso, CBS Sports, 2025-04-28). The Chronicle's Day 2 need list had tackle and guard on it, and no offensive lineman came until 249 after Banks left (Cohn, SI, 2025-04-27). The right direction, taken at the wrong prices, with the offensive line left for the seventh round.

The process grade, and why

The needs were receiver depth, cornerback with Ward and Lenoir in their last contract years, and offensive tackle, which the beat called the greater need (Wagoner, ESPN, 2024-04-27). Ricky Pearsall at 31 was a consensus pick inside the building (49ers.com, 2024-04-25) and the weekend's most questioned pick outside it, taken over corners and tackles (Cohn, SI, 2024-04-28; Prisco, CBS Sports, 2024-04-28). Day 2 was handled well: one spot down for a fifth-rounder with Renardo Green still there, then 94 and 132 to Philadelphia for Dominick Puni at 86, a trade-up called a bit of a stretch (49ers Webzone transcript, 2024-04-26; Reuter, NFL.com, 2024-04-27). Green and Puni were the praised picks of the weekend. No tackle came in eight picks, and two of them went to move up for a running back. A defensible first-rounder at the wrong need, and a good Day 2.

The process grade, and why

Nineteen of 22 starters were back, the club's stated need was a kicker with Robbie Gould gone, and there was no fourth-round pick (Maiocco, NBC Sports Bay Area, 2023-04-28). The first belonged to Miami and the second, third and fourth to Carolina. Moving from 102 to 87 for Ji'Ayir Brown, at the cost of 164 and 222, bought a player several graders had in the second round (Martin, NBC Sports Bay Area, 2023-05-01). Jake Moody at 99 is the grade. The need was real and the club argued he would not last to 155, but the precedent for a kicker taken that high was Roberto Aguayo, and the third round was called rich for any kicker (Branch, SF Chronicle, 2023-04-28; PFF, 2023-04-29). Latu at 101 was called a reach (Reuter, NFL.com, 2023-04-29), and no offensive lineman was drafted with Mike McGlinchey gone (Maiocco, NBC Sports Bay Area, 2023-04-29). One good trade, one third-round pick spent where the market said to wait.

The process grade, and why

No first-round pick, owed to Miami, and a playoff roster with three named holes: a rusher opposite Nick Bosa, protection for Trey Lance, and receiver speed, with Deebo Samuel's trade request hanging over the weekend (Maiocco, NBC Sports Bay Area, 2022-04-29). The club stayed put through all nine picks and refused every Samuel offer (49ers Webzone transcript, 2022-04-29). Jackson at 61 met the biggest need at a price PFF called phenomenal value (PFF, 2022-04-30), and Gray at 105 brought the speed. Davis-Price at 93 is the grade: a third-round running back on a roster that had drafted two the year before, named the worst pick of the class and a huge overreach (Prisco, CBS Sports, 2022-05-02; Kiper via NBC Sports Bay Area, 2022-05-02). The process grade, and why

No. 3 was already in hand from the March 26 trade, and two needs were on the record: a successor to Jimmy Garoppolo, who had missed 10 games in 2020, and protection after 39 sacks allowed (Maiocco, NBC Sports Bay Area, 2021-04-29; White, NBC Sports Bay Area, 2021-04-30). Lance over Mac Jones was a bet on ceiling with Garoppolo as the safety net, and the weekend's doubts were 17 FCS starts and accuracy (Wagoner, ESPN, 2021-04-30). Day 2 is what holds the grade down. Banks at 48 was rated the top guard but a doubtful outside-zone athlete, and then two fourth-round picks went to move up for a running back while receiver and secondary needs stayed open (Wagoner, ESPN, 2021-05-01; Reuter, NFL.com, 2021-05-02). Hufanga, the Pac-12 defensive player of the year, at 180 was called the best first impression of the class (Branch, SF Chronicle, 2021-05-03).
