Sam Okuayinonu Went On Injured Reserve And The Long Snapper Came Up

San Francisco placed Sam Okuayinonu on injured reserve and signed defensive lineman Khalid Kareem to a one-year deal on Friday, and on Saturday, from Melbourne, signed long snapper Jon Weeks off its practice squad and waived tight end Brayden Willis. Two men off the 53, two on, and the count holds. Matt Maiocco reports Okuayinonu is out indefinitely with a foot injury sustained at Wednesday's practice in Santa Clara, and gives Kareem's two seasons under Raheem Morris in Atlanta as most of the reason he is the replacement. The Weeks signing closes a question that has been open since cut day: San Francisco carried no long snapper on its active roster for six days, and a practice-squad player may be elevated to a game-day roster no more than three times in a season. Kickoff at the Melbourne Cricket Ground is Thursday at 5:35 p.m. Pacific, which is Friday morning there.

The Club Ruled Out Sam Okuayinonu Six Days Before Kickoff

San Francisco announced on Friday that Sam Okuayinonu has been ruled out of the September 10 opener against the Rams with a foot injury, a downgrade from the questionable designation it gave him on Wednesday night when it left him behind. David Bonilla at 49ers Webzone has the club's wording. The ruling comes six days before kickoff and before any Week 1 injury report is due, because the ordinary game-week sequence does not apply to a player who is 7,855 miles from his team. Okuayinonu started twelve of the fifteen games he played last season, and the club's own injury-report archive lists him out for Week 13 and Week 15, the two games missing from that fifteen. Nine defensive linemen sat on the active roster on Friday afternoon and eight of them are in Melbourne. Three of those eight did not practise on Wednesday and a fourth, Nick Bosa, did team work that day for the first time since August 3. Hours after the ruling, Greg Auman of FOX Sports reported that San Francisco is signing edge rusher Khalid Kareem off Atlanta's practice squad to the active roster and flying him to Melbourne.
