Every call on this site goes on a public ledger and gets graded. The misses stay up.

Cole McKinney moves past Mattias Havelid into No. 14 on the prospect board, the week's only change in order. McKinney has six goals and three assists in nine games at Michigan; Havelid, now No. 15, has no goals and one assist in nine games for the Barracuda. The case for the move is McKinney's season. His weekend at Ohio State produced one goal in two games, scored with Michigan's goalie pulled for an extra attacker.

Filip Bystedt's NHL career has begun, and Luca Cagnoni is back with the Barracuda. Bystedt went without a point in his first three NHL games; Cagnoni followed his October 27 Sharks appearance with a Barracuda game the next night and an even-strength goal against Bakersfield on November 1. The board ranks Calder-eligible prospects and does not react to where they play, leaving Bystedt eighth and Cagnoni fifth.

Joey Muldowney is the prospect of the week with two goals and three assists in two games at Merrimack. He stays No. 23; the order from No. 21 through No. 30 does not move. Ivar Stenberg holds No. 1 after going without a point in four games, leaving his season at nine points in sixteen NHL games.

Cagnoni went from four-fifths of the power play to half of it

Luca Cagnoni's share of San Jose's power play has fallen to about half, and the tracking shows the same skater it showed in his three NHL games last April.

McKinney had the points, but Stenberg's minutes carry more weight

Cole McKinney had five points in two Michigan games. Ivar Stenberg's climb to fourth of twelve San Jose forwards in ice time is the thing to hold onto, and the board's one move put Luca Cagnoni fifth.

Eric Comrie costs San Jose $1.15 million in either league. It exposed him first.

San Jose placed goaltender Eric Comrie and forward Jimmy Huntington on waivers on Friday, September 25, for assignment to the Barracuda, and reassigned Filip Bystedt. Comrie signed a two-year, one-way deal on July 1 at $1,150,000 a season, with the same $1,150,000 as his minor-league salary, per PuckPedia. Ilya Samsonov, signed September 8 at $850,000 in the NHL and $225,000 in the minors, stays in camp; he has not dressed in any of San Jose's three exhibitions. Claims on Friday's 61 waived players were due 24 hours later; two were claimed, and neither was a Shark. Opening-night rosters are due Monday at 5 p.m. Eastern.

San Jose Drew Its Rookie Line At One Hundred Games And Then Crossed It Once

San Jose released its 2026 Rookie Faceoff roster on September 1: 14 forwards, nine defensemen, three goaltenders. Curtis Pashelka of the Mercury News reports the club's participation guideline is 100 or fewer combined NHL and AHL regular-season games, and that Luca Cagnoni is over it at 140. Sorted by that number, 14 of the 26 named have never played a professional regular-season game, and only Filip Bystedt at 123 is above the line. Sam Dickinson is under it at 72 and is not going either. Five of the nine defensemen invited shoot right, on a club whose established blue line carries two right shots.

Filip Bystedt Fixed His Faceoffs For A Job Two Sharks Already Hold

Filip Bystedt led the San Jose Barracuda with 60 points in 65 games last season, got his faceoff percentage above 50 for the first time, and played zero NHL games. The two Sharks centers who also win more than half their draws are the two already signed to play the fourth line. He is the first center San Jose calls when the season bites, and the honest worst case is not that he plays badly. It is that nobody finds out.

On the record

Called Shots →
OpenJul 28, 2026

Luca Cagnoni plays fewer than 42 regular-season games for the San Jose Sharks in 2026-27. Scored off his official NHL regular-season games-played total for San Jose only: 41 or fewer is a hit, 42 or more is a miss, including if he reaches 42 after being recalled from the Barracuda, and including if he is traded (games for another club do not count).

This is the runway argument reduced to one player's usage, which is the only part of it a stranger can score. Cagnoni is 21, has three career NHL games, put up 43 points in 67 AHL games, and is in the final season of his entry-level contract with restricted free agency arriving in July 2027. It is genuinely at risk in both directions rather than a formality: PuckPedia's own depth chart lists him second among San Jose's left-shot defensemen, ahead of Sam Dickinson, so the projection sitting in public is that he plays a lot. Against that, six defensemen are under contract, four of them hold 93.8 percent of the blue line's $30,373,750, and Cagnoni is waivers exempt while all four veterans are not, which makes him the cheapest body to move in an October crunch. An injury to Nurse, Trouba, Orlov or Kesselring is the most likely way this call loses, and that is the correct way for it to lose.
