The AP poll has UCLA ninth and skips Michigan. The ratings cannot tell them apart

UCLA is 6-0 and ninth in the AP poll. Michigan is 4-2 and received no AP votes after beating Penn State. ESPN's Football Power Index has them 31st and 32nd, and SP+ has them 19th and 23rd. The ratings give UCLA a 39.6% chance at the playoff and Michigan 0.6%, and the gap is two losses by a combined 7 points. They meet in Ann Arbor on November 21.

Every call on this site goes on a public ledger and gets graded. The misses stay up.
Michigan linebackers Troy Bowles and Nathaniel Staehling, in Michigan's white road jerseys and navy trousers, tackle a Minnesota ball carrier in maroon at Huntington Bank Stadium in Minneapolis on October 3, 2026, with two more Michigan defenders closing in.

Michigan beat Penn State 21-18 on Saturday and was not in the AP poll on Sunday. Not in the 25, and not among the seven teams listed as receiving votes. The coaches gave it 10 points, which put it 35th among the teams they named.

UCLA is ninth in the same AP poll and 10th in the coaches poll. It is 6-0 and 4-0 in the Big Ten, and it comes to Michigan Stadium on November 21.

Two of the ratings that try to measure how well a team plays, rather than what it has won, cannot tell the two apart. ESPN's Football Power Index, updated Wednesday, has UCLA 31st at 10.98 and Michigan 32nd at 10.91. Bill Connelly's SP+, as published through CollegeFootballData, has UCLA 19th at 14.0 and Michigan 23rd at 13.0. Both numbers are points: what each rating expects a team to win by against an average opponent, adjusted for who it has played.

The polls and the ratings are measuring different things, and both are doing it correctly. A poll ranks a record. Michigan's record has two losses in it, 20-19 to Iowa at home and 20-14 at Minnesota, a combined 7 points. UCLA has none, and its last two wins were 17-15 at Oregon and 17-7 against Wisconsin.

That 7 points is most of what separates the two seasons. FPI gives UCLA a 39.6% chance to make the playoff. It gives Michigan 0.6%.

A top-two defense and a 75th offense#

The SP+ number is built from two very different halves. Michigan's defense is tied with Indiana's for second of 138 FBS teams, behind only Ohio State's. Its offense is 75th. Michigan has scored 22.7 points a game, and 52 of its 136 came against UTEP, which is 1-6.

Against Penn State the two halves were both on show. Michigan held Penn State to 2.2 yards a carry and still needed three second-half takeaways to score at all. Every one of its 21 points came after one.

The defense is the reason the ratings like this team, and the offense is the reason the record looks like it does. Of the 12 FBS teams Michigan has faced or will face this season, the four with the best SP+ defenses are Ohio State, Indiana, Oklahoma and Iowa. Michigan scored 17 against Oklahoma and 19 against Iowa. The other two are still ahead.

The Big Ten, with six weeks left#

Big Ten recordTeams

3-1Indiana, USC
2-1Iowa, Minnesota, Northwestern, Oregon, Wisconsin
2-2Nebraska, Purdue
1-2Illinois, Michigan, Rutgers
1-3Washington
0-4Maryland, Michigan State, Penn State

Ohio State and UCLA do not play each other in the regular season. Michigan plays both, and Indiana as well. Only one other Big Ten team has all three still on its schedule, USC.

That is the case for the Big Ten title path, and it is a thin one. Michigan's best possible finish is 7-2. Winning out would hand Ohio State, UCLA and Indiana a loss apiece, and Michigan would still need Ohio State or UCLA to lose somewhere else, USC to lose again, and none of the five teams at 2-1 to finish 8-1. FPI gives Michigan a 0.0% chance of reaching the title game.

What 10-2 bought the last two years#

The at-large path is the one with a record behind it. In 2024 and 2025, 12 teams from the four power conferences and Notre Dame finished the regular season 10-2 without winning a conference title. Five of them made the field.

Virginia, 202519thno

Alabama, Iowa State and Virginia lost conference championship games after their 10-2 regular seasons. Fourteen teams from the same group finished the regular season 9-3 without a title, and none of them made the field.

So the line for Michigan is 10-2, and 10-2 means winning all six. A 10-2 Michigan would have beaten the teams now third, sixth and ninth in the AP poll, plus Oregon in Eugene and Ohio State in Columbus, and it would carry two losses to Iowa, which is 15th, and Minnesota, which is 4-2 and unranked. The table says that resume is the kind that lands in the top 10. FPI puts the chance of building it at 0.1%.

The poll and SP+ agree on Ohio State and Indiana. They disagree on the other two that matter. Oregon received 79 AP points and is 25th in the coaches poll after losing at Oklahoma State and at home to UCLA, and SP+ rates it 11th, with a top-20 offense and a top-20 defense. UCLA is ninth in the AP poll, and SP+ rates it 19th, 38th on offense and 21st on defense.

Read by SP+, Michigan's hardest three games left are Ohio State, Indiana and Oregon, two of them on the road. FPI ranks Michigan's remaining schedule as the eighth hardest in FBS. The ones it should win, Rutgers and Michigan State, sit between them.

Indiana comes first. Its defense is the one SP+ rates level with Michigan's, and it has allowed 12.9 points a game. DraftKings has Indiana by 7. Saturday at noon Eastern on Fox is the first of the three games that decide whether the at-large conversation exists at all, and a loss ends it.

Health, carried forward#

Rod Moore Jr., the sixth-year safety who started the second-half turn with his interception, was carted off after it. Whittingham said afterward that it was "nothing major" and that Moore's availability for Indiana was "debatable," according to The Detroit News. He gave no diagnosis.

Andrew Sprague has missed four straight games, UTEP, Iowa, Minnesota and Penn State, and still has no diagnosis on the record. Brady Norton, who started at Minnesota, was ruled out against Penn State, and Avery Gach made his first career start at right guard in his place. The Big Ten's first availability report for the Indiana game is due Wednesday, and it is the first document that will say who is back.

The game where the poll and the ratings meet#

UCLA at Michigan on November 21 is the one game on the schedule where the two measures disagree about the same two teams. The AP poll has UCLA ninth and Michigan unranked. The ratings have them a point apart, and the game is in Ann Arbor.

Called shot. Michigan beats UCLA on November 21 at Michigan Stadium. The ratings have the two teams level on a neutral field, Michigan's defense is tied for second in SP+ against a UCLA offense rated 38th, and the game is at home. The other side is real. UCLA is unbeaten, it already won 17-15 at Oregon, a team SP+ rates higher than either of them, and Michigan's offense has scored more than 21 points against one opponent all year.

Tommy Carr's first start is against a team that almost never gives the ball back

Michigan (4-2, 1-2 Big Ten) hosts Indiana (6-1, 3-1), sixth in the AP poll, at Michigan Stadium at noon Eastern on Fox. DraftKings has Indiana by 7.5 with a total of 42.5 at 5:43 a.m. Eastern, which splits to about Indiana 25, Michigan 17.5. Tommy Carr, a true freshman, is expected to make his first start at quarterback; Kyle Whittingham said Monday the staff had decided and would not say who. Michigan scored all 21 of its points against Penn State after takeaways. Indiana has three turnovers in seven games, all fumbles, and Josh Hoover is 108 of 169 for 1,660 yards, 18 touchdowns and no interceptions. Indiana ran 51 times for 138 yards against Nebraska and Ohio State, sacks included. Michigan lists seven players Out and seven Questionable, among them Rod Moore Jr. and two linemen who started against Penn State; Indiana lists no one. Prediction: Indiana 20, Michigan 13.

Michigan completed nothing that travelled more than 11 yards in the air, and won

Michigan beat Penn State 21-18 without completing a pass that travelled more than 11 yards past the line of scrimmage. By the catch spots recorded in Michigan Athletics' official play-by-play, its 10 completions covered 41 yards in the air and 49 after the catch, and the four throws that went 25 yards or more downfield were two Tommy Carr incompletions and both Bryce Underwood interceptions. Across six games, Michigan has completed five passes of 20 or more air yards, all against Western Michigan and Iowa. Penn State's deep passing game was one receiver: the stat crew marked five of Rocco Becht's 44 throws as deep, all five went to Chase Sowell, and three were caught for 76 yards. In the run game, the second half's 14 runs up the middle were Michigan's season habit producing 10.1 yards a carry instead of the 4.0 it had averaged there in the first five games, and the ball moved to Savion Hiter, who carried twice before halftime and nine times after it. PFF's grades, cited as rankings only, had Avery Gach first in run blocking among the five linemen who started at the conventional spots, Manuel Beigel's run-blocking grade highest of any Michigan lineman, Rod Moore Jr. the highest-graded Michigan defender despite leaving in the third quarter, and Jyaire Hill last in coverage among the eight defensive backs who made a tackle. Kyle Whittingham said Monday he will not name the Indiana starter.

Takeaways

All 21 of Michigan's points came after Penn State gave the ball away

Michigan beat Penn State 21-18 at Michigan Stadium in front of 110,731 and is 4-2, 1-2 in the Big Ten. Penn State led 3-0 at halftime, when Michigan had 80 yards on 23 plays and two Bryce Underwood interceptions. Tommy Carr played the second half at quarterback. Rod Moore Jr. intercepted Rocco Becht on Penn State's first snap of the half, Chris Bracy intercepted him on the next possession and later forced a fumble on a sack, and Michigan scored a touchdown after each: Bryson Kuzdzal's 43-yard run, Jordan Marshall's 1-yard run and Carr's 12-yard run. Michigan's other nine possessions ended in six punts, two interceptions and the clock. Michigan ran 23 times for 174 yards after halftime, three of those runs for 20 or more, after one such run in its first five games. It threw 18 passes for 90 yards. Both Penn State touchdowns came the snap after a Michigan defensive penalty wiped out a third-down incompletion. Moore was carted off after his interception; Kyle Whittingham called it nothing major and said his availability for Indiana is debatable. Whittingham will say on Monday who starts at quarterback against Indiana.

Called Shots →
Held upAug 19, 2026

Rod Moore starts at least 3 of Michigan's first 4 games of the 2026 regular season.

This is the article's own argument made scoreable, and it is a call about starts rather than about availability, which is the cheap version. The reason it has teeth: in the three games Moore has played since the start of 2024 he STARTED ONE, at USC on October 11, 2025, after coming off the bench at Nebraska and against Wisconsin. Michigan has published no depth chart and is not obliged to before game week, and Whittingham said on August 10 that Moore is cleared and on a coach-imposed snap limit. So a staff that has already shown it will bring him back in stages might do it again in September. I am calling that it does not. MOVED TOWARD 2026-09-06. Rod Moore started the opener, per Michigan's Player Participation release ("LS -- 1 MOORE JR., 25 Curtis"), and was credited with two tackles. One of the three starts the row needs is banked with three games left in the window.

Three of Michigan's five starting linemen are on the Penn State injury report

Michigan's initial Big Ten availability report for Saturday's game against Penn State, filed Wednesday, October 14, lists 14 players, six of them offensive linemen. Jake Guarnera, who started at center at Minnesota, and Brady Norton, another Minnesota starter, are Questionable; Nathan Efobi, a third starter, is Probable. Evan Link and Blake Frazier are not listed. Andrew Sprague is Out, the first time Michigan has opened a week with him at Out rather than Questionable, and Ace Hamilton is Out. Andrew Babalola, Out on all eight of his earlier designations this season, is Questionable. Manuel Beigel, Out on game day at Minnesota, is off the report, which makes him Available under the conference rule. In Michigan's two earlier conference weeks, ten Wednesday Questionable designations ended with three Outs on game day, all three of them offensive linemen; the six non-linemen all finished Available and the fourth lineman, Houston Ka'aha'aina-Torres, was a Game Time Decision who played. A judge cleared Bauman and Earby to play. Michigan hasn't listed either

Washtenaw County Circuit Judge Julia B. Owdziej granted temporary restraining orders against the NCAA on Tuesday, October 13, that make tight end Alex Bauman, formerly of Tulane and Miami, and cornerback Jeremiah Earby, formerly of California and Boise State, eligible to play in 2026. Both are members of the high school class of 2022, whom the NCAA's five-for-five rule did not cover. Both filed on September 25, according to court records cited by Field Level Media, and a preliminary injunction hearing is set for November 4. Michigan plays Penn State on October 17, Indiana on October 24 and Rutgers on October 31 before that hearing. Neither player was on Michigan's official roster on Wednesday, and a Michigan spokesman declined comment; the Michigan Daily reported he declined because neither player has officially signed. CBS Sports reported that both will play for Michigan this season. Michigan's tight ends have 9 catches for 65 yards through 5 games; Bauman caught 18 passes for 166 yards at Miami in 2025. Earby had 4 interceptions and 13 passes defended at Boise State in 2025.

Iowa has one ranked team left to play, and Michigan has four

Michigan is 3-1 and 0-1 in the Big Ten after losing 20-19 to Iowa, and is out of the AP Top 25 for the second time this season: 54 points, sixth among the teams outside the 25, down from 18th and 432. The coaches have it 24th with 166 points. The three teams Michigan has beaten are a combined 5-7 and none is ranked. Six Big Ten teams are in the AP poll: Ohio State 5th, Indiana 6th, Iowa 14th, Oregon 15th, USC 18th and UCLA 23rd. Michigan still plays four of them, Indiana and UCLA at home and Oregon and Ohio State on the road, worth 3,816 AP points, the most left on any of those seven teams' schedules. Iowa has one ranked opponent left, Ohio State at home on Saturday, and holds the head-to-head tiebreak over Michigan. In the two seasons of an 18-team Big Ten, the four title-game berths went to teams that were 9-0, 8-1, 9-0 and 9-0 in conference play, and two other 8-1 teams stayed home. In the two seasons of a 12-team playoff, none of the 14 at-large bids went to a team with three regular-season losses, and four of the eight 10-2 teams in the committee's final top 16 that were not conference champions and did not play a title game got in. Three of Michigan's four ranked opponents come in its last four games, after the committee's first ranking on November 3. Andrew Babalola is due back at practice next week, Andrew Sprague's status is unresolved after two missed games, and John Henry Daley was hurt on the second-to-last play against Iowa. Michigan plays at Minnesota on Saturday at noon Eastern on Fox.

Michigan's First Official Injury Report Is Due September 23, Three Games Into A Season That Starts Saturday

Michigan Athletics published thirty-six pages of week-one game notes on Monday. Page 36 prints a table headed Michigan Starting Lineups, twenty-two positions across offense and defense, and every 2026 box in it is empty. The table directly beside it, which counts how many games each returning player has started, is filled in completely. Four days later the Big Ten announced it will require four availability reports a week instead of one, and the conference confirmed the reports cover games against conference opponents only. Michigan plays three non-conference games first. Its first report is due at 8 p.m. Eastern on Wednesday, September 23. It will say who cannot play. It has no column for who starts.

Rod Moore Has Played Three Games Since The Start Of 2024. Michigan Has Voted Him A Captain Three Times.

Rod Moore tore his ACL in March 2024, did not appear in a game that season, came back for three games in the autumn of 2025 and has not played since October 11. In that time his teammates have voted him a captain three times, in 2024, in 2025 and again on Monday night. Michigan calls him the first player in school history to be voted a three-time captain, a sentence that turns on the word voted, and the university's own archive shows why.
