Three of Michigan's five starting linemen are on the Penn State injury report

Jake Guarnera and Brady Norton are Questionable for Penn State, and Andrew Babalola is listed as anything other than Out for the first time this season. In two conference weeks, Michigan's Wednesday Questionable has meant Out by Saturday for three of four offensive linemen and for none of six players at other positions.

Every call on this site goes on a public ledger and gets graded. The misses stay up.
Michigan center Jake Guarnera, No. 53, in a three-point stance in the road white uniform and winged helmet at Northwestern in 2025, with a second Michigan lineman at left and Northwestern rushers on both edges.

Kyle Whittingham said on Monday that some linemen hurt at Minnesota would be questionable, and that the paperwork would arrive Wednesday. It arrived. Michigan filed its first Big Ten availability report for Penn State on Wednesday night, and it reads like a depth chart somebody has been crossing out.

Fourteen Michigan names. Six of them are offensive linemen.

Michigan started five linemen at Minnesota on October 3, by its own box score: Jake Guarnera, Nathan Efobi, Brady Norton, Evan Link and Blake Frazier. Three of the five are on Wednesday's report. Guarnera, the center, is Questionable. Norton is Questionable. Efobi is Probable. Link and Frazier are not listed, and under the conference's rule a player who is not listed is Available.

Behind them, Andrew Sprague and Ace Hamilton are Out. Andrew Babalola is Questionable.

The Babalola line#

That last one is new. Michigan has filed eight availability designations for Babalola this season, four columns in the Iowa week and four in the Minnesota week, and all eight say Out. Wednesday's says Questionable.

The tackle tore an ACL in August 2025, per the Detroit Free Press, was cleared, and had two setbacks. Whittingham said Monday that Babalola would practice that day for the first time in about a month. "We'll gradually ramp him up throughout the week and see if he's ready to contribute this Saturday," he said. He has not played in a game since the fall of 2024. Questionable is the word for "see if he's ready." It is not yet the word for ready.

The Sprague line#

Sprague went the other way, and in a way that tells you something about the form. Michigan listed its starting right tackle as Questionable on the Wednesday of the Iowa week, and he was Out on game day. It listed him Questionable on the Wednesday of the Minnesota week, and he was Out by Friday's update. This Wednesday it listed him Out. Whittingham called his return "way out there" on Monday. The form has stopped being optimistic on his behalf, which is roughly when the coach did.

What Questionable has meant at Michigan#

The rule is new. The Big Ten announced four filings a week on August 28, and Michigan has filed under it for two conference games, Iowa and Minnesota. Two games is a small sample, and it is the whole sample.

Across those two Wednesdays, Michigan put a Questionable next to a player ten times. Here is where all ten finished on game day:

So the split is clean, and it is small: three of four offensive-line Questionables ended Out, and none of six at other positions did. One player accounts for two of the three Outs, and Sprague's Questionable never turned out to be much of a question.

Strip Sprague out and the line has two cases: Beigel, Out, and Ka'aha'aina-Torres, who played. That is a coin with two flips, and nobody should bet a house on it. What the record does say is narrower. When Michigan has changed its mind about a lineman this season, it has changed it late. Sprague stayed Questionable through Friday's filing against Iowa and went to Out only on game day. At Minnesota, both he and Beigel held at Questionable through Thursday and dropped to Out on Friday night.

Which means Wednesday's report answers less than it appears to. Thursday's update is due at 8 p.m. Eastern tonight. Friday's is due at the same hour. The one that counts goes up two hours before the 3:30 p.m. Eastern kickoff on Saturday.

Who is still standing#

Two names went the right way. Beigel, Out on game day at Minnesota, is off the report entirely, so he is Available. Ka'aha'aina-Torres, the Game Time Decision who played at Minnesota, is not listed either.

That is the inventory. Two starters with no designation. One starter Probable, two Questionable. A tackle who has not played since 2024, one step closer than he has been all year. And two backups who were on the last report and are not on this one. Michigan would like to line up against Penn State with the same five men who started the last game.

The form will say by Saturday afternoon whether it can. It has been slow to say so before.

The call: Jake Guarnera and Brady Norton both appear on Michigan's official participation list for the October 17 game against Penn State. The case for it: both started the last game, the bye gave them two weeks to heal, and Michigan chose Questionable for them on a form where it used Doubtful for a receiver. The case against: three of the four offensive linemen Michigan has listed Questionable on a Wednesday this season were Out by kickoff, and this one needs two players to come through, not one.

Whittingham changed one starter on Monday, and it was the punt returner

Kyle Whittingham said at his Monday press conference on October 12 that Bryce Underwood remains Michigan's starting quarterback and Jason Beck remains the play-caller for Saturday's game against Penn State. The only personnel change he announced was at punt returner, where Andrew Marsh, who has lost fumbles against Western Michigan and Minnesota, will be replaced for reasons Whittingham said include injury. Right tackle Andrew Sprague, out since the UTEP game, will miss several more weeks; Whittingham said his return is \"way out there.\" Andrew Babalola returned to practice Monday for the first time in about a month, by Whittingham's count. Whittingham said more linemen hurt at Minnesota will be questionable on Wednesday's availability report. Michigan is 3-2 and 0-2 in the Big Ten, its first 0-2 conference start since 2014, with a turnover margin of minus 4; Underwood has thrown 4 interceptions and lost 2 fumbles. Tommy Carr took first-team reps in the bye and could get a series or two. Penn State, 3-3 and 0-3, visits Michigan Stadium at 3:30 p.m. Eastern on October 17.

Last week Michigan's injury report did not change until two hours before kickoff

Michigan's first Big Ten availability report for Saturday's game at Minnesota, filed Wednesday, September 30, lists six players as Questionable: receiver Andrew Marsh, edge rushers Dom Nichols and John Henry Daley, and offensive linemen Andrew Sprague, Houston Ka'aha'aina-Torres and Manuel Beigel. Blake Frazier is Probable. Six players are Out, including defensive end Julius Holly. Daley and Nichols have 5.5 of Michigan's 12 sacks, per the official box scores; Nate Marshall and freshman Tariq Boney have 2 each. Under the Big Ten's 2026 rules, teams file at 8 p.m. Eastern on the three weekdays before a Saturday game and again two hours before kickoff, when the only categories are game-time decision, out and out for the first half, and an unlisted player is available. Before Iowa, Michigan filed an unchanged list on all three weekdays. In the Big Ten archive through September 26, 64 players were Questionable on a Wednesday report; 22 were still Questionable on Friday, and 15 of those were game-time decisions on game day. The other seven, four from Michigan and three from Michigan State, were settled on the game-day report: Nichols, Zeke Berry and Logan Forbes were left off as available, and Sprague was out. Michigan plays at Minnesota on Saturday at noon Eastern on Fox, so the game-day report is due about 7 a.m. Pacific.

The Freaks List Used To Be Where Michigan Kept Its Defensive Line

Gavin Magorien is No. 78 on Feldman's 2026 Freaks list: 6-0, 202, a 550-pound squat and a 6.87 three-cone. Michigan's own roster matches Feldman's description on all five stated fields. What has changed is how many names Michigan puts on the list and where they sit. The Wolverines had four in 2024, two in 2025 and one now, and Manuel Beigel, No. 62 last year as a defensive lineman, is listed at offensive line.

Held upAug 11, 2026

Michigan has not publicly identified all five offensive line starters by name and position on or before August 22, 2026.

Harding's target was internal solidification rather than an announcement, and that gap is the whole basis of the call: programs settle a line in the building weeks before they say so, and Michigan has published no depth chart. There are three spots open, one of them left tackle, where Kyle Whittingham said on Monday that Andrew Babalola, Evan Link and Blake Frazier are splitting the majority of the reps, and Babalola did not play in 2025. Whittingham's own marker is looser than a date: about 10 practices before definitive decisions, and five were in the bank on Monday. It fails if coaches or the program name all five spots on or before August 22, including a released depth chart or a coach confirming the five in an availability. Reporters projecting a five does not resolve it, because the claim is about what Michigan says rather than what anyone predicts. A partial naming, four of five, does not resolve it either.

Takeaways

All 21 of Michigan's points came after Penn State gave the ball away

Michigan beat Penn State 21-18 at Michigan Stadium in front of 110,731 and is 4-2, 1-2 in the Big Ten. Penn State led 3-0 at halftime, when Michigan had 80 yards on 23 plays and two Bryce Underwood interceptions. Tommy Carr played the second half at quarterback. Rod Moore Jr. intercepted Rocco Becht on Penn State's first snap of the half, Chris Bracy intercepted him on the next possession and later forced a fumble on a sack, and Michigan scored a touchdown after each: Bryson Kuzdzal's 43-yard run, Jordan Marshall's 1-yard run and Carr's 12-yard run. Michigan's other nine possessions ended in six punts, two interceptions and the clock. Michigan ran 23 times for 174 yards after halftime, three of those runs for 20 or more, after one such run in its first five games. It threw 18 passes for 90 yards. Both Penn State touchdowns came the snap after a Michigan defensive penalty wiped out a third-down incompletion. Moore was carted off after his interception; Kyle Whittingham called it nothing major and said his availability for Indiana is debatable. Whittingham will say on Monday who starts at quarterback against Indiana.

A judge cleared Bauman and Earby to play. Michigan hasn't listed either

Washtenaw County Circuit Judge Julia B. Owdziej granted temporary restraining orders against the NCAA on Tuesday, October 13, that make tight end Alex Bauman, formerly of Tulane and Miami, and cornerback Jeremiah Earby, formerly of California and Boise State, eligible to play in 2026. Both are members of the high school class of 2022, whom the NCAA's five-for-five rule did not cover. Both filed on September 25, according to court records cited by Field Level Media, and a preliminary injunction hearing is set for November 4. Michigan plays Penn State on October 17, Indiana on October 24 and Rutgers on October 31 before that hearing. Neither player was on Michigan's official roster on Wednesday, and a Michigan spokesman declined comment; the Michigan Daily reported he declined because neither player has officially signed. CBS Sports reported that both will play for Michigan this season. Michigan's tight ends have 9 catches for 65 yards through 5 games; Bauman caught 18 passes for 166 yards at Miami in 2025. Earby had 4 interceptions and 13 passes defended at Boise State in 2025.

Northwestern ran for 413 yards on Penn State. Was that the real Penn State?

Penn State (3-3, 0-3 Big Ten) visits Michigan (3-2, 0-2) on Saturday, October 17, at 3:30 p.m. Eastern on CBS. Against Marshall, Temple and Buffalo, Penn State ran 120 times for 615 yards and allowed 333 on 97 carries. In three Big Ten games it has run 89 times for 235 yards, 2.6 a carry and 17th of 18 conference teams in conference games, and allowed 662 yards on 113 carries, 5.9 a carry and 16th. Northwestern's 413 rushing yards on October 2 account for most of that defensive figure: it is the only 400-yard rushing game against an ACC, Big Ten, Big 12 or SEC defense in 322 such team-games this season, and Northwestern had run 27 times for 32 yards against Indiana the week before. Without it, Wisconsin and USC ran 58 times for 249 yards, 4.3 a carry, which would rank 12th. Penn State's own running game has been poor in all three conference games: everyone other than quarterback Rocco Becht has 62 carries for 182 yards. Michigan has run 68 times for 232 yards in two Big Ten games, 12th in the conference, and its run defense ranks fourth at 2.9 yards a carry.

Michigan Is The Only Team That Left The AP Top 25, And It Won

Michigan opened the season with a one-point win and left the AP Top 25, the only team in the country to drop out of the poll released on Tuesday afternoon. The Associated Press recorded it as the first time since at least 2008 that a team ranked that high was dropped after winning, and recorded Louisville, which lost and held its place at 24th, as the lowest-ranked team since at least 2008 to survive a loss. Virginia took the vacated place at 25th. Every other team from the preseason 25 is still there, including Louisville, the one preseason-ranked team that actually lost. In the coaches' poll Michigan survived at 24th, down from 16th, having shed 555 of its 719 points. The schedule ahead is the thing that decides the season rather than the ballot: six of Michigan's 11 remaining opponents are in the current AP poll, and three of them are in its top six, a distinction only four other teams in the country share. Oklahoma, 11th, is at Michigan Stadium on Saturday at noon Eastern on Fox. No College Football Playoff ranking exists yet and will not until November.

Michigan Spent August On Two Freshmen. The Third Receiver Job Went To A Junior With Six Starts.

The last open job in Michigan's offense went to Channing Goodwin, a junior who started six games at receiver last season and caught 12 passes for 148 yards. The candidates August preferred were Jaime Ffrench, Salesi Moa and Travis Johnson, and Michigan's own game notes say what they have done: Ffrench caught one pass for six yards at Texas, and neither freshman has caught a college pass at all. Michigan also lost about half of its receivers' 2025 receptions, which is why the third spot is worth an argument. The offense's own starting alignment lists two receiver positions and a flex, so the job Whittingham just filled is a rotation job rather than a line in a starting lineup.

Michigan And Utah Swapped Twelve Places In The Poll Without Playing A Game

The Associated Press preseason Top 25, voted by 69 media members and released Monday, puts Michigan 16th with 718 points and Utah 21st with 304. In last season's final AP poll the order was reversed and wider: Utah 14th on an 11-2 record, Michigan 21st on a 9-4 one. Kyle Whittingham left the first program for the second in December after 21 seasons, taking his offensive coordinator and, in John Henry Daley, the only Michigan player on either of AP's preseason All-America teams, an edge rusher who ruptured an Achilles last November and has been on a camp snap count since.
