Every Trade, Graded Twice

Selling a 31-year-old rental with a 5.13 ERA over 94 2/3 innings (18 starts) was right for a 47-65 club, and clearing the roughly $2.1 million left on his salary is what a seller does. The price sits at the floor of the market: Atlanta arrived with a rotation crisis reported the same day (Lopez to the IL, Strider shut down, Schwellenbach out), and San Francisco sold a day early for a 24-year-old 40-man arm with a 6.89 ERA in 55 major league appearances and a 15.1 percent career strikeout rate, then optioned him to Sacramento on arrival. A low-minors lottery arm would have cost no roster spot; Molina costs one.

The right trade at the right time at a price above what the week's market had paid for a rental bat: Philadelphia took every remaining dollar (about $2.97 million on Arraez, $252,700 on Kilian) and sent back the best prospect in any of the five deals. Marquez, 20, had a 1.68 ERA and 93 strikeouts among 222 batters (41.9 percent) over 59 innings at Single-A and High-A, was Philadelphia's No. 4 prospect by MLB Pipeline, and McDaniel graded him 50 FV, seventh of the 86 prospects who moved, a potential No. 3 or No. 4 starter just outside his top 100. Gair (35 FV, 69th) is a 23-year-old reliever with a 44.6 percent strikeout rate and a 14.9 percent walk rate in 36 low-minors innings. The step short of an A is distance: 30 High-A innings is three or four years from an answer.

The shape a 47-65 club should look for on every call: it sold a 28-year-old reliever at the top of his market (2.76 ERA over 32 2/3 innings, 45 strikeouts but 22 walks among 142 batters, first arbitration year this winter) and a prospect described as a fourth-outfielder profile (Gutierrez, 40 FV, 31st of 86, .271/.385/.441 in 357 High-A plate appearances), and bought five and a half seasons of control over a 23-year-old former fourth overall pick at a price set by his injury and by 364 major league plate appearances of .223/.278/.346. The risk was known and specific: a wrist surgery in 2025, a bone stress reaction in the left ulna on June 26, 2026 with no reported timeline, an average exit velocity of 86 mph. The step short of an A is the wait, whose length was not in any document on August 3.

The one trade the club did not have to make. Ramos, 26, was controllable through 2029 and due his first arbitration hearing, with an on-base percentage of .322, .328 and .304 across three seasons, a 26.8 percent strikeout rate (82 of 306 plate appearances) and a 5.2 percent walk rate through August 3, and minus-17 across the three public defensive measures over roughly 3,100 outfield innings. Selling a corner outfielder whose cost rises every winter into the most acute outfield need in the league (Judge and Bellinger both on the injured list) was the right time. Lalane (45 FV, 15th of 86, 2.77 ERA and 98 strikeouts among 310 batters over 78 innings, New York's No. 5 by Pipeline and Baseball America) and Kent (40 FV, 24th, .302/.359/.433 in 354 High-A plate appearances) are a fair price and not a strong one: the arm carried a 2024-25 shoulder history and the infielder was on the seven-day injured list on the day of the trade, unplayed since July 5.

Right trade, right week: a 34-year-old rental left-hander with a 3.08 ERA over 122 2/3 innings but 57 walks among 512 batters (11.1 percent) and an ERA about a run and two-thirds below his expected fielding-independent mark is sold on the ERA before the ERA catches up, and San Diego paid for the 3.08. The return (Hernandez, 17, 45 FV, 13th of 86, .316/.439/.519 in 197 DSL plate appearances after a $1.4 million January signing; Mendez, 24, 40 FV, 26th, San Diego's No. 4 by Pipeline and FanGraphs) beat the pre-deadline expectation of one upper-minors starter outside a buyer's top ten. The minus: the Giants paid about $4.33 million to move him, the better piece is five years away, and Mendez was on the injured list with a shoulder problem and two rehab innings on the day the trade was filed.
