How this is graded
Two grades. The process grade is set once, as of the day the deal was agreed, from what was knowable that day, and never changes. The result grade is regraded on a fixed calendar until the contract ends. The dotted line on every chart is the process grade; the gap is the story. The offseason as a whole gets the same two grades: a process grade at opening day against the needs board filed the week the market opened, then the same calendar.
The rubric, in this order. Need: did the club need this, from the roster that day. Fit: was this the right player for that hole among what the market offered that winter. Price and term: against what the market's own dated lists expected him to get, never a number of ours. Risk: age, injury record, options, opt-outs, deferrals. A signing that fills no need at a fair price grades below one that fills the biggest hole at a slight overpay. The letter is still a signed judgment under a byline, not a formula.
What the result grade weighs. Production against the contract, the pulled line since the deal counted with its n; the role actually filled against the need; and, on a multi-year deal, the obligation still owed. A regrade may move more than one step, and its argument has to say why.
The calendar. The All-Star break and the season's end of every season through the last guaranteed year; final at that season's end, or earlier at a release, a waiver claim or a trade, which links to the Trade Regrade row. A minor-league deal counts from the day the contract is selected. A checkpoint that passes with no regrade shows as overdue rather than waiting quietly.
The source-date rule. A process grade may cite nothing dated later than the day after the deal was agreed. Every contract term and every market prediction on this page carries its source and its date, and no price grade is written on a term the desk has not verified; the page says which terms those are. The 2025-26 Giants class was first graded in September 2026, not at signing. Each process grade is written as of the day the deal was agreed from sources dated then, and the date it was written prints beside it.
Every number is pulled, not typed. Each player's line since the deal is written into the ledger from the league's own feeds, with its n and the date it was pulled, and a regrade cannot publish on a number that is not in the file.
