The Giants lose their last five and finish 65 and 97

The Giants lost their last five games, all at Oracle Park, by a combined score of 18 to 8, and finished 65 and 97. Twice to Minnesota, three times to the Dodgers. That is the only baseball this organization played this week: every affiliate was already finished, so the board below is a set of final lines and nobody on it moved.

The rookie pitching was better than the record. Anthony Molina went six innings against Minnesota and allowed two runs in a 3 to 2 loss. Yunior Marte went five against the Dodgers and allowed two runs in a 2 to 0 loss, then got optioned to Sacramento the next day as the roster reshuffled for the last two games. Trent Harris ran his streak without an earned run to fifteen appearances before it ended on September 26. On the other side, Blade Tidwell went on the injured list on September 22 with a right UCL sprain and was on the sixty-day list two days later, the third young starter on this page whose season ended on an elbow.

Bo Davidson hit in all five games he played, six for sixteen, all singles, which is about the right amount of information to have about a player's first week and no more. Drew Cavanaugh doubled and tripled in the same game. Marcelo Mayer finished one for fifteen as a Giant. Bryce Eldridge never came off the concussion list, and his rookie year ends where it was: 107 games, seventeen home runs, fifty-nine walks, a .364 on-base percentage at twenty-one.

He never came off the concussion list, so the rookie year is final and it ended on September 16. Read it slowly, because it is better than the batting average makes it sound: 107 games, 386 at bats, seventeen home runs, twenty-three doubles and fifty-nine walks, a .364 on-base percentage, all of it at twenty-one. The strikeouts, 119 of them, are the only part of the line that belongs to a twenty-one-year-old. The rest belongs to a first baseman. The question for 2027 is not whether he plays every day. It is what the concussion does to the winter, and nobody has said.

He played in all five of the last five games and hit in every one of them, six for sixteen, and every hit was a single. That is the honest shape of a six-game major league career: seven hits, no extra bases, one walk, seven strikeouts, and a batting average that twenty at bats cannot support in either direction. The power that produced twenty-nine home runs across two minor league levels did not show up in a week of September at bats against Minnesota and Los Angeles, which is a thing that happens to rookies and says nothing yet. He got the call, he did not look lost, and he enters the winter on the 40-man roster, which in September was the whole point.

Three singles in ten at bats, six strikeouts, no walks. The season closes at seventeen strikeouts in thirty major league plate appearances, which is the one number from his thirteen games worth carrying into the winter, because it is the exact opposite of what he did in the minors: seventy-three walks against ninety-one strikeouts across Double-A and Triple-A. Thirty plate appearances is not a verdict. It is a question with a very specific shape, and the answer arrives in March.

Nine plate appearances in five games, two hits, two walks. He turned twenty-six along the way, according to the Stats API, and finishes the year at .238/.330/.394 with eleven home runs in 134 games. That is a real major league season in a part-time role, 340 at bats across 134 games, and it looks like a fourth outfielder who takes his walks and occasionally runs into one. Fourth outfielders who get on base keep jobs. The version of him that starts needs more than 340 at bats of evidence.

One single in eleven at bats, on the last day of the season, and one for fifteen as a Giant. There is no analysis available in fifteen at bats and the honest thing is to not pretend otherwise. What the Giants actually have is a twenty-three-year-old who hit .220 with three home runs in seventy Boston games, then missed three months with a stress reaction in his left forearm and a foot problem during the rehab, then came back cold in the last week of a lost season. The trade gets evaluated in 2027 on a healthy spring, and it has not started being evaluated yet.

Three for seventeen with a double, and two walks. Those two walks doubled his major league total for the second week running, from two to four, in 112 at bats. That is the line, and the season makes the same argument it has made all year: five home runs and a .420 slugging percentage from a hitter whose on-base percentage is .267 because he almost never lets a pitch go by. A 1B/OF who slugs .420 is a bench bat. A 1B/OF who slugs .420 and walks is a different conversation, and he has not started it.

Two hits in the whole week and both came on September 26, a double and a triple, which is how a catcher with a .292 slugging percentage posts an .875 OPS across nine plate appearances. Ignore it, fondly. The season is fifty-nine major league games at .229 with one home run and eighteen walks, from a twenty-four-year-old who started the year catching in Double-A and ended it as the regular catcher because the two men ahead of him were on the sixty-day list. The fifty-nine games of catching are the development. The bat is next year's problem.

Right oblique strain, ten-day list, season over without another game. The major league line is thirty-two at bats and the Triple-A line is the real one: .293/.377/.414 in 102 games, with fifty-two walks against fifty-five strikeouts. That is a utility infielder's profile that just needs a spring where somebody lets him play.

The season ended with him on the sixty-day list for right elbow neuritis. Twenty-two major league games at .235 with two home runs and eight strikeouts in fifty-one at bats, which is a good strikeout rate for anybody and a very good one for a catcher. The elbow is the offseason story, because it is his throwing arm and because the catching depth chart behind him just played fifty-nine games out of necessity.

Sixty-day list, fractured left patella, last game August 9. Final: fifty-three games at .243/.289/.375. Eight walks in 144 at bats is the number that decides whether he catches a hundred games in 2027 or forty.

The Giants placed him on the fifteen-day list on September 22 with a right UCL sprain and moved him to the sixty-day list two days later. His last start was September 21. Those three letters are the worst ones a pitcher can hear, and the transaction says sprain rather than tear, which is the only part of it that is good news and is not yet enough information to call it good news. The season stops at 56.2 major league innings with a 4.45 ERA, and his last two starts produced ten innings and one walk. Whatever the elbow needs decides his 2027, not the ERA.

The scoreless streak reached fifteen appearances on September 23 and ended on September 26, when he allowed one earned run in an inning against the Dodgers. Counted off the game log: every outing from August 23 through September 23, fifteen of them, without an earned run. He finishes at 2.31 in twenty-three and a third major league innings with twenty-seven strikeouts, though none came in the final week. It is a bullpen audition that went about as well as twenty-three innings can, and twenty-three innings is still what it was.

Three innings against the Dodgers on September 26, one hit, one run, one walk. A short start, and the box score does not say why. The season closes at 27.2 major league innings with five walks, which is the most useful fact about him: the command that fell apart at Triple-A, seventeen walks in forty-three innings, did not follow him to the majors. A twenty-three-year-old lefty who threw strikes in September is a rotation candidate in March, and there will be openings.

Six innings against Minnesota on September 22, four hits, two runs, one walk, six strikeouts, and the Giants lost 3 to 2 anyway, which is a 65 and 97 season in one sentence. As a Giant: twenty-nine innings, twenty-nine strikeouts, six walks, 3.72. That is the best case anybody could have made for the Tyler Mahle trade in five starts, and it holds up.

Five innings against the Dodgers on September 25, six hits, two runs, and the Giants lost 2 to 0, so the start was good enough and the offense was not there. The club optioned him to Sacramento the next day, which with two games left is a roster move and not a review. He finishes having pitched at High-A, Double-A and the major leagues in one season at twenty-three. Fifteen strikeouts in 24.1 major league innings, after seventy-two in sixty-four at Double-A, is the thing to watch in 2027.

Sixty-day list, left elbow, last pitched August 24. Final: eight major league starts at 6.49 and thirty-eight walks in eighty-two Triple-A innings. The elbow and the walks are the same offseason question asked two ways.

Sixty-day list, right elbow strain, last pitched July 20. Fourteen major league starts and seventy innings is a full rookie half-season, and he is now one of three pitchers in this section whose year ended on an elbow.

No games anywhere in the organization this week, so the board is a set of final lines, and his is the best one. A .966 OPS in the complex league, then .357/.444/.566 in thirty-one Low-A games at eighteen, with forty-one walks against fifty-five strikeouts between the two stops. The hamstring cost him most of a month in May and June and he still reached full-season ball. Holds at 1.

Eighteen home runs and a .302 average across two levels at nineteen, and the High-A half is the part that matters: sixty-nine games against older pitching without the strikeouts ballooning. If the argument for Gonzalez over Level is youth and on-base percentage, the argument for Level is 113 games of it. Holds at 2, and the gap is small.

Five professional innings, three appearances, and the last of them a Double-A elimination game. The ranking rests on draft position and on the organization's own decision to push him two levels in two weeks, not on the innings, and that is worth saying plainly while he sits at 3. His first full season is the one that tests it.

His season ended on San Jose's seven-day injured list with no injury ever named at the source, and his last game was August 20. The complex-league line at seventeen, .917 OPS with six home runs, is the reason he is ranked here. The twenty Low-A games, with twenty-nine strikeouts in ninety-one at bats, are the reason the ranking is a projection. Holds at 4.

A 2.92 ERA and 118 strikeouts in 98.2 High-A innings is one of the best pitching seasons in the system, and sixteen Double-A innings with seven walks is where it stopped. He opens 2027 back in Richmond with something specific to fix. Holds at 5.

The same .812 OPS at High-A and Double-A, to the point, in 111 games between them. A college infielder whose numbers did not move when the level did is the most reassuring kind of boring. Holds at 6.

Finished on Eugene's seven-day injured list with nothing named. Sixty-nine innings and 105 strikeouts across two organizations, ten of those innings as a Giant. The strikeout rate is the whole case and it is a strong one. Holds at 7.

Eighteen home runs at High-A, one at Double-A, and 124 strikeouts across 102 games. The power is real and the strikeout rate is the entire scouting report, and seventy-nine Double-A at bats is not enough to tell which one wins. Holds at 8.

134 strikeouts and 134.2 innings across two levels, with a 3.74 ERA at Triple-A in the Pacific Coast League. He is twenty-five and has a full season at the level below the majors. On a staff that just lost three starters to elbows, he is the name on this board most likely to pitch in San Francisco first. Holds at 9.

Twenty-two home runs in ninety-two full-season games, eight of them in twenty-two High-A games, and 106 strikeouts to go with them. Ranked thirty-third in April. Holds at 10.

Nobody in this group played, so nobody moved, and the honest thing to do with a frozen board is point at the lines that will matter in February. Keyner Martinez struck out 134 hitters in 93.2 Low-A innings at twenty-two, a strikeout rate that plays anywhere, with a 4.61 ERA that says the rest of the package is still being assembled. Diego Velasquez reached Triple-A and got on base at .381 in thirty-six games, which is how a middle infielder without much power earns a 40-man conversation. And Luis De La Torre is the cautionary line: 126 strikeouts and eighty-two walks in 100.2 innings. Eighty-two walks is not a slump. It is a delivery.

The bottom half of the board is where the 40-man roster decisions of November live, and the lines that will get argued over are not the loud ones. Jakob Christian got on base at .371 with nine home runs in fifty-five High-A games at twenty-four, which is either a late bloomer or a college bat doing what college bats do to younger pitchers, and a single season cannot tell those apart. Walker Martin hit eighteen home runs and struck out 152 times, a combination that has a ceiling and a floor about a mile apart. Three names at the bottom, Reggie Crawford, Josh Bostick and Reid Worley, lost the whole year to injury, and nothing about their rankings means anything until they throw again.

One new entry and it is the one that matters: Blade Tidwell has a sprained ulnar collateral ligament. With Whisenhunt and McDonald already down with elbows, three of the rotation-age arms on this page end the season with the same body part in the transaction log. Luis Hernandez and Ramon Marquez finish on minor league injured lists with no injury ever named, which is the question to ask the organization this winter.

The season is over at every level, and the arguments it leaves behind are good ones. Whether Jhonny Level's 113 games outrank Josuar Gonzalez's sixty-one. Whether Jackson Flora belongs at 3 on five innings and a transaction. What three elbows do to the 2027 rotation, and whether Joe Whitman and Matt Wilkinson are part of the answer. What is wrong with Luis Hernandez, for whom nobody has named an injury since August. And how much of Bryce Eldridge's fifty-nine walks at twenty-one is the player he already is. There is a whole winter for it.
