Rafael Devers Is Done For The Year, And The Paperwork That Says So Is Also A Call-Up

San Francisco placed Rafael Devers on the 60-day injured list on Sunday with a core muscle injury, and the league's roster system carries his status as Injured 60-Day. With 13 games left on the schedule the designation ends his season by the calendar, whatever Monday's consultation with a Philadelphia specialist recommends. The club's 40-man roster held 40 of 40 before the move and 40 of 40 after it: the transaction that closed Devers's year is the transaction that made room for Scott Bandura, whose contract was selected from Sacramento the same day. Devers hit .258 with a .340 on-base percentage and a .525 slugging percentage across 148 games, with 37 home runs, 98 RBI and 36 doubles, which ties him with three other hitters for the major league lead. He homered in each of his last two games. He is the 16th man on this club's 60-day list and the second infielder it has moved there to end a season, after Matt Chapman in August. Seven contract years remain. One take filed at -160.

San Francisco has stolen 69 bases in 147 games this season, after 68 in 162 games in 2025 and 68 in 162 games in 2024. Buster Posey, the club's president of baseball operations, told Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle this week that he has added running to the pitching and defense he has emphasized since taking the job, and that he has spent two years wanting that tone set. The season number is not what changed. The split inside it is: 27 steals in the first 85 games at a 69.2 percent success rate, then 42 in the next 62 at 80.8 percent. Since July 1 the Giants have stolen bases at 0.677 per game against a league rate of 0.668 over the same span, which ranks them twelfth of thirty after finishing 29th in each of the two previous seasons. Of the four Giants with nine or more steals, Luis Arraez was traded to Philadelphia on August 3 and Casey Schmitt is on the 60-day injured list with a torn meniscus. Jung Hoo Lee stole none in his first 56 games and twelve in his next 78. Fifty-eight major league players have stolen fifteen bases this season and no Giant has stolen more than twelve. The Giants Have More Men On The 60-Day Injured List Than Any Club In Baseball, And All Of Them Return In November

San Francisco has fourteen players on the 60-day injured list, the most in the major leagues; the next-highest total is nine, shared by five clubs, and the median across the thirty teams is six. Three of the fourteen have not appeared in a major league game in 2026, including Randy Rodriguez, who threw fifty games with a 1.78 earned run average in 2025, and Rowan Wick, who has not thrown a major league pitch since 2022. Nine of the fourteen were moved to the list on or after August 2, and every one of those nine transfers happened on a day the club also added a player to its 40-man roster, either by selecting a contract or by claiming somebody off waivers. The most recent pair came Thursday, when Keaton Winn was transferred with right elbow neuritis and third baseman Brett Harris was claimed from Boston and optioned the same afternoon. MLB's glossary lists the transfer as one of four ways a club with a full 40-man roster can open a spot, and describes the removal as temporary. The 40-man carries thirty-nine names today; adding the fourteen back makes fifty-three. In each of its last three Novembers the club reinstated four, four and two men from the list. Six men have started a game at third base for San Francisco in 2026. Matt Chapman made 82 of those starts and has not played since June 30; Casey Schmitt made 24 and has not played since July 27. Both had surgery in the following days and MLB's injury page gives both an expected return of 2027. Christian Koss has held the job since July 28, but he has also started nine games at shortstop since July 1, and on every one of those days somebody else played third: Schmitt once, Buddy Kennedy five times, Shay Whitcomb three. Kennedy and Whitcomb were both claimed off waivers this month, from Seattle on August 2 and Houston on August 13, and Kennedy was designated for assignment on Thursday after going 4 for 33 with four singles. Willy Adames received a PRP injection in his sprained left elbow on Thursday; Tony Vitello said three or four weeks of rest and the club's injury page says a four-week minimum, which lands on September 24 against a last scheduled game of September 27. Koss and Whitcomb have drawn six walks in 159 plate appearances between them this season, against 74 in 857 for Chapman and Adames. Three takes filed, on Adames, on Koss at shortstop and on a seventh third baseman.

Ten Pitchers Have Started A Game For The Giants This Season, And Three Of Them Cannot Start Another

San Francisco has played 127 games and used ten starting pitchers, tied for the sixth-fewest in the majors against a league median of thirteen. Three of those ten are unavailable: Tyler Mahle was traded to Atlanta on August 2, Robbie Ray to San Diego on August 3, and Trevor McDonald has been on the injured list since July 21 with a strained right elbow. Between them they made 53 of the 127 starts and threw 287.2 of the club's 677 starting innings.
