Yunior Marte's 40-Man Spot Was Already Spoken For In November
San Francisco selected Yunior Marte's contract on August 29 and started him in the second game of a doubleheader against Arizona, under three months before the November deadline at which the club had to protect him or lose him in December. Marte signed with Kansas City on June 2, 2022 at age 18, which under the published rule gives his club five seasons, and 2026 is the fifth. San Francisco acquired him from the Royals for Mike Yastrzemski at last year's deadline. Buster Posey described the promotion criterion in public on August 23, six days earlier. San Francisco Used The Same Roster Spot For Two Major League Debuts On Saturday
San Francisco handed out two major league debuts on Saturday, eight hours apart, and used one active-roster spot to do it. Seth Lonsway, 27, threw two innings of relief in a 7-1 loss in the first game and was optioned to Triple-A Sacramento between games so the club could add Yunior Marte, a 23-year-old right-hander promoted directly from Double-A Richmond. Marte started the second game and gave up one run in four and two-thirds innings of a 7-2 win. He had thrown 291 professional innings before Saturday and none of them at Triple-A. The 40-man spot came from Casey Schmitt, moved from the 10-day to the 60-day injured list with a left knee meniscus tear he has carried since July 28. Marte is the eleventh man to start a game for the Giants in 2026 and the fourteenth to debut for them, a figure MLB.com's Maria Guardado reports is second in the majors behind the White Sox. Six of the fourteen came between April 1 and June 26, none in July, and eight in August. Two takes filed.
