San Francisco signed the fourth overall pick on July 18 and assigned him to the Arizona Complex League the same day. He was activated there on July 29 and never pitched in a game. He was sent to Single-A San Jose on September 1, debuted on September 4, and started Game 2 of the California League Division Series on September 10, telling reporters that night he was lined up for Game 3 of the championship series if it was needed.
