A Third-Round Rookie Has The First-Team Edge Reps Opposite Keion White

Matt Barrows filed his account of Monday's practice on Tuesday morning, and the most consequential line in it sits in the notes section of a story about a rookie receiver. With Mykel Williams on the physically unable to perform list and Nick Bosa kept out of team drills, Barrows writes, Romello Height has been working with the first-string defense opposite Keion White.

That is the 49ers' first-team edge pairing after two practices. One arrived in a trade nine months ago. The other was the 70th selection of April's draft and has been a professional since May.

Nobody planned this. It is worth writing down anyway. A defense that produced 20 sacks last season, fewest in the league, spent the offseason on the premise that the edge would be fixed by two men getting healthy, and through two practices the first-team reps have gone to somebody else.

Why the ones look like this#

Bosa tore his ACL in Week 3 last season, his second full tear as a pro, the first having come in 2020 on the other knee. He was cleared to open camp, with no PUP designation. Beyond that the record is contested. Barrows, filing Tuesday, says he was held out of team drills entirely. The day-two account this site's tracker was built from had him taking a limited number of team reps before 11-on-11. Two published versions of the same practice, and they do not reconcile, so neither is asserted here. Raheem Morris, whichever it was: "He's limited and working his way back, but he looks excellent."

Mykel Williams is the cleaner case. Last year's first-round pick tore his ACL in Week 9 and opened camp on active PUP, alongside George Kittle, Alfred Collins and Isaac Guerendo. John Lynch said in July that Williams is "making every effort to be ready for Week 1." Active PUP carries no minimum absence and he can practice the day he is cleared, which is why this site has not moved his grade. It also means he has not practiced with the first team in July.

Take those two out and the edge room is Keion White, Romello Height, Sam Okuayinonu, Cameron Sample and Mikail Kamara. The first two are the ones taking the reps.

Height was drafted to be this, just not yet#

The 49ers took Height 70th overall out of Texas Tech and signed him to a four-year deal against a 2026 cap hit of $1,325,510. He is 25, old for a rookie, after six college seasons across four schools: Auburn, USC, Georgia Tech, Texas Tech. Only the last was productive. Starting 14 games as a Red Raider in 2025, he finished with 10 sacks and 11.5 tackles for loss and was named first-team All-Big 12.

The other number on his file is 239 pounds, and it explains the job. Barrows projects him as this season's designated pass rusher, "similar to the role Bryce Huff had last year."

Huff is the part of this that matters for the roster math. He retired on March 12 at 27, announced on his own Instagram, to build a company that works on lithium battery fire risk, and cited a torn wrist ligament as what made him reconsider. His 2025 season was 15 games, eight starts, 15 quarterback hits, two forced fumbles and four sacks. Whether those four led the 49ers outright is unclear: Barrows posted the team leaderboard with Huff at four and Clelin Ferrell at three, while other season write-ups have Ferrell tied at four. Either way, the number that led this defense in sacks was four, out of 20.

So the front office drafted a replacement for a player who led or tied for the lead on the worst pass rush in football, and that replacement is taking first-team reps two months early because the two men above him are not available to take them.

White has earned the grade move#

The 49ers announced White's acquisition from New England on October 29, 2025. The team's release did not disclose compensation; the reported framework was a 2026 sixth-round pick to New England for White and a 2026 seventh. The 46th pick of the 2023 draft, he played 38 games with 18 starts and 6.0 sacks for the Patriots. San Francisco went looking for him five weeks after losing Bosa.

He missed the spring rehabbing a leg injury. There was no PUP designation at camp open, he was a full participant in the first practice, and he has appeared on no injury or absence list since. Three days of availability is not a season, but it is the specific thing his file was waiting on, and this site's 53-man tracker moved him from 7 to 8 on Tuesday. His 2026 cap hit is $1,812,295, which for a fourth-year defensive end taking first-team reps is the least interesting number here.

The rest of the room, briefly#

Gracen Halton, the rookie defensive tackle, left Monday's practice with a bone bruise in his knee and is out indefinitely, per Maiocco. He was already a bubble player, and the interior crowds the moment Collins comes off PUP.

Andrew Farmer II left the same practice with a back injury and will be evaluated further, also per Maiocco's July 27 report. Four sources list him at three different positions: 49ers.com and Maiocco have him as a defensive lineman, Barrows calls him an edge rusher, and Spotrac carries him as a linebacker. He is not taking first-team reps at any of them.

The scheme wants bodies this room may not have#

Morris is the fifth 49ers defensive coordinator in five seasons and has been given room to install his own looks. The players confirm the change is structural. Trent Williams, in comments Tim Kawakami collected at the SF Standard on July 27: "We've been going against the same defense... since I've been here. It's always been a four-down front." Fred Warner, who framed it as seeing something new after eight seasons: "Definitely saw some new things... we're adding some of that five-down looks, different coverages."

Five-man fronts want hybrid edge and linebacker bodies. Kawakami, writing a columnist's read rather than a report, questions whether this roster has them beyond Bosa, and floats the 49ers turning aggressive on the trade market before November 10. That is a projection with no source attached and it should be read as one. What is not a projection is who is filling those reps now: a rookie, a player acquired midseason, and two men who have not practiced with the first team this month.

The next real evidence is Wednesday#

The team has billed it as the most intense practice of camp so far. Thursday is a league-mandated day off, so it is the only session this week that will produce anything. Tuesday was the club's first jog-through of camp and carried no media availability, which is why nothing here is dated July 28.

The thing to watch is not whether Height makes plays. He will make some; 239-pound rushers in July usually do. It is whether he is still taking first-team reps the week Bosa is cleared for full team work, because that is when this stops being a story about who is unavailable and becomes one about the depth chart.
