The back-to-back

Golden State moved Curry's night off to the Clippers

Stephen Curry and Draymond Green sat the second night of the first back-to-back, at Phoenix. For the second one they sit the first night, at home against the 1-4 Clippers on Sunday, and are listed as likely back for the Suns on Monday.

Stephen Curry will not play on Sunday night. That part was always coming. Steve Kerr said on October 15 that the Warriors do not play Curry on back-to-backs, and Sunday's game against the Clippers at Chase Center is the first night of one.

What changed is which night.

The first time, Curry played the first game and sat the second. He and Draymond Green played Memphis at home on October 23 and then did not play at Phoenix on October 24, a 131-122 loss. This time the order is reversed. Curry is out Sunday managing his right knee, and Green is out resting a bilateral low back injury, Ali Thanawalla of NBC Sports Bay Area reported on Saturday afternoon, citing the club's listings as posted by his colleague Dalton Johnson. Both are likely to be available Monday, when Phoenix comes to Chase Center. ESPN's injury listing, crediting Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints, calls Curry's absence rest and gives his return date as Monday.

So the two men who sat out Phoenix are lined up for Phoenix. Al Horford and Brandin Podziemski, who also did not play on October 24, are not on Sunday's injury list at all.

Why Sunday#

Nobody on the record has said yet. Kerr talks before Sunday's game. The schedules say plenty in the meantime.

The Clippers are 1-4. They played at Minnesota on Friday, play in San Francisco on Sunday, and are home to Toronto on Monday, so they are on their third game in four nights and the front end of their own back-to-back. Phoenix is 1-3, lost at home to Denver 127-120 on Friday, and then has nothing until Monday. The Suns arrive with two days off.

The read: Golden State put Curry and Green on the night against the more rested team, which is also the team that beat it without them on October 24. That is a coaching staff picking the harder game to win rather than the easier one to rest for. It is also an inference, and Kerr can wreck it in a sentence on Sunday evening (he does this).

The tickets#

Kerr's October advice was aimed at the people buying seats. "We have fans who buy tickets expecting to see Steph," he said, per Monte Poole of NBC Sports Bay Area. "And then we have a back-to-back, and we don't play him."

Monday is the first of six back-to-backs this season that end at Chase Center, by ESPN's schedule. The October pattern said those were the nights to avoid. The second data point says the club will pick either night, and that it may pick by opponent.

Two weeks ago I told you to buy the night before. Sunday is the night before.

(Sorry.)

Monday's game is at 7 p.m. Pacific. The next back-to-back is on the road, at Dallas on November 18 and Memphis on November 19, and it will be the third data point. Anyway, two of them now disagree, which is the most useful thing a sample of two can do.

The comeback

The Lakers won the first quarter 38-15. The Warriors won the second 38-15.

The Golden State Warriors beat the Los Angeles Lakers 112-95 at Chase Center on Friday, October 30, in an NBA Cup group game, after trailing 38-15 at the end of the first quarter. They won the second quarter 38-15 to tie the game 53-53 at halftime. The Associated Press reported that no team in the shot-clock era, regular season or playoffs, had trailed by 23 or more after one quarter and been tied or ahead at halftime, and that the 17-point margin is the largest in that era for a team down 20 or more after one. The previous best was Golden State's 124-110 win over Chicago on March 4, 1976, after trailing 41-18. Stephen Curry scored 31 points, made 8 of 14 3-pointers and passed Dominique Wilkins (26,668) for 18th on the NBA's career scoring list; he has 26,674, 36 behind Oscar Robertson. Luka Doncic scored 37, 21 of them in the first quarter. Golden State is 3-3 after an 0-3 start and plays the Clippers at home on Sunday.

The Warriors scored 122 on the night Curry, Green and Horford sat

Golden State opened 2026-27 at 0-3: 127-105 at the Lakers on October 21, 111-108 to Memphis on October 23 and 131-122 at Phoenix on October 24. Stephen Curry, Draymond Green and Al Horford played the first two and sat the third, the second night of a back-to-back, with Brandin Podziemski, who played only the Memphis game. By ESPN box scores the Warriors shot 41 percent in each of the two games the veterans played and 22 of 77 from three; on the night they sat the club shot 45 percent and 17 of 39. Horford played both nights of no back-to-back last season, and Friday starts one

Golden State lost its opener 127-105 at the Lakers on October 21 and plays four games in six nights from Friday: Memphis at Chase Center on October 23, at Phoenix on October 24, at Denver on October 26 and at Minnesota on October 28. The first two are the season's first back-to-back. Kristaps Porzingis is not expected around the team in the immediate future, the club said Wednesday, and ESPN reported the Warriors are exploring trades for him. Charles Bassey did not play Wednesday with a knee injury. That left the center minutes to Draymond Green, 21, and Al Horford, 17, with two-way big man Graham Ike playing 12, while Walker Kessler scored 26 points on 12-of-12 shooting for Los Angeles. Across Golden State's 16 back-to-backs in 2025-26, by ESPN game logs, Green played both nights of eight, Stephen Curry both nights of five and Horford both nights of none. Golden State opened with all 15 standard roster spots filled, Brandon Williams among them, and sits $347,568 under the second-apron hard cap, by Spotrac.

The trend

Gui Santos has 11 of the 30 turnovers in Kerr's likely starting five

Steve Kerr made turnovers the subject of Monday's film session after counting about 90 through four preseason games; the box scores give 84. Through five games Golden State has 104, 20.8 a game, against 115 by its opponents. Last October the club had 110 in five exhibitions, then averaged 16.4 across its first five regular-season games and 15.7 across 82, team turnovers included, by ESPN's box scores. This fall the offense is new, which Kerr cited for holding off. Among the five Kerr is leaning toward for October 21, Gui Santos has 11 turnovers in 86 minutes across four games, after five in 71 minutes in last year's preseason and 1.5 a game last season. Podziemski has five, down from 14 last October, and Green three, down from 14. Kerr described Santos's place in that lineup as size and playmaking. Portland visits Chase Center on Friday for the last exhibition; Yaxel Lendeborg rolled his left ankle Tuesday and returned.

Porzingis is out indefinitely, and Bassey started when Green and Horford sat

The Warriors announced Wednesday that Kristaps Porzingis, who missed training camp and the first five preseason games, met with general manager Mike Dunleavy and Dr. Rick Celebrini at the practice facility on Tuesday and will remain out indefinitely due to the same health-related matter, but will be around the team. The club said it will give an update on a potential resumption of practice, playing status or timeline when available and appropriate. ESPN's Anthony Slater reported he is not cleared to practice. With Green and Horford resting in Tuesday's preseason game against the Lakers in Las Vegas, Charles Bassey started at center beside Stephen Curry, Brandin Podziemski, Gui Santos and Yaxel Lendeborg and played 27 minutes with 12 rebounds, and Graham Ike played 12, in a 101-89 win. The season opens October 21 at the Lakers, with a back-to-back on October 23 and 24.

Directly against the reported expectation of a two-year max carrying him through his age-40 season. Term is the whole call: two years, three years, or no extension all make this wrong. It is also the most direct available answer to how much longer he intends to play, in his own hand.

Curry and Podziemski are not expected at Phoenix, a night after Ike started

Stephen Curry said 'Probably not, but I'll talk to the staff' when asked Friday night about playing at Phoenix on Saturday, per Kevin Topley of NBC Sports Bay Area, and Anthony Slater of ESPN reported that Curry is expected to rest and that Brandin Podziemski will miss the game with back soreness. Podziemski said he 'tweaked it a little bit, nothing too serious.' It is the second game of Golden State's first back-to-back, eight days after Steve Kerr said the club does not play Curry in back-to-backs. On Friday the Warriors started Graham Ike, a two-way center, against Memphis with Charles Bassey out with a knee injury; Ike scored 10 points in 12 minutes. Golden State led 106-94 with 3:47 left, did not make another field goal, and lost 111-108 to fall to 0-2. Jimmy Butler, Moses Moody and Kristaps Porzingis are also out.

Al Horford passed his father's whole NBA career in his twelfth game

Tito Horford was drafted 39th by Milwaukee in 1988 and played 63 NBA games over three seasons for the Bucks and the Washington Bullets: 376 minutes, 93 points, no starts. His son Al, born in Puerto Plata in 1986 and sent to Michigan at 14, passed both totals within 22 days of his own debut for Atlanta in November 2007. Al played 141 playoff games before his first Finals game, at Golden State in June 2022, won a title with Boston in 2024 at 38, signed with the Warriors on October 1, 2025, and turned 40 in June. The Warriors open the 2026-27 season at the Lakers on October 21, a year to the day after his first game for them, in the same building.

The Golden State Warriors ruled guard Brandin Podziemski out of the season opener at the Los Angeles Lakers on Wednesday, October 21, with lower back soreness, Anthony Slater of ESPN reported Tuesday night. Podziemski sat out the previous three days of practice and had been listed as questionable. Kerr wants Green or Horford out there as often as possible. Saturday it was 37 of 48

Steve Kerr said after Monday's practice that he is leaning toward starting Stephen Curry, Brandin Podziemski, Gui Santos, Yaxel Lendeborg and Draymond Green on October 21, with Al Horford off the bench, as reported by Dalton Johnson of NBC Sports Bay Area. His reason was Horford's minutes: about 20 a game is the limit, and he wants Green or Horford on the floor as often as possible to anchor the defense. Saturday against Sacramento was the only preseason game Horford has played as a reserve. By NBA.com's substitution log, Green or Horford was on the floor for 37:32 of 48 minutes, both for 6:10, and neither for 10:28, of which Charles Bassey covered the last 8:09. Horford averaged 21.6 minutes across 45 games last season by ESPN's game log, 20.0 across the first 30, and did not play both nights of any of Golden State's 16 back-to-backs. The second and third games of the season are a back-to-back. Kristaps Porzingis is expected at Chase Center on Tuesday to meet the performance staff, and Kerr could not say whether he will be available for the opener. Horford is not traveling to Tuesday's game in Las Vegas, which Kerr called planned maintenance.

Golden State's last two-way job went to a man it did not draft

Golden State signed Graham Ike, undrafted out of Gonzaga in June, to a two-way contract on September 21, filling the last of the three two-way slots the club had carried open since the summer. Inside the same 24 hours, Lajae Jones, the guard Golden State took with the 54th pick of the 2026 draft and never signed, was announced by Pallacanestro Trieste of the Italian first division. Ike and Jones played the same nine games on the same Golden State summer roster: Ike averaged 10.0 points and 7.2 rebounds in 21.2 minutes, Jones 7.0 and 3.4 in 17.1. Two-way contracts are capped at three a team and pay $678,882 this season, and 79 of the league's 90 slots are now filled. The Warriors keep Jones's NBA rights while he plays abroad, which is the road Gui Santos took after Golden State drafted him 55th in 2022 and which ended with Santos starting 30 games last season. One take filed, on how much Ike plays.

Vogel gets the Warriors defense, and its shot blockers played 1,425 minutes

Golden State blocked 346 shots in 2025-26, 4.2 a game, 26th in the league, and pulled down 31.0 defensive rebounds a game, 25th. It also finished second in steals and sixth in turnovers forced. Three men who are still under contract blocked shots at better than 1.5 per 36 minutes last season: Charles Bassey at 2.52 on 100 minutes, Al Horford at 1.89, Kristaps Porzingis at 1.62. They played 1,425 of the team's 19,805 minutes, 7.2 percent, across 65 games. The next rate on the list is Draymond Green's 0.81. Quinten Post and Trayce Jackson-Davis, third and eighth on the team in blocks, are gone, and with the other departures go 75 of the 346 blocks and 578 of the 2,540 defensive rebounds. The three players added since are a rookie forward, a power forward and a guard. Frank Vogel was announced as associate head coach on September 17 and Steve Kerr says he is turning the defense over to him. Vogel's twelve seasons as a head coach produced three defenses that finished first in the league and two that finished third. Camp opens in Hawaii on September 29. Two takes filed.
