The week behind

The Warriors scored 122 on the night Curry, Green and Horford sat

Three games, three different starting fives, three losses. Curry, Green and Horford played in the two games the Warriors scored 105 and 108 in; all three sat with Podziemski on the night it scored 122. The other end allowed 127, 111 and 131 whoever was on the floor, and Lendeborg led the team in minutes every night.

Every call on this site goes on a public ledger and gets graded. The misses stay up.
Stephen Curry, in the Warriors' blue road jersey with gold trim, rises for a jump shot at the top of the key as Washington's Marcin Gortat, in the Wizards' white home uniform, number 13, leaps with both arms up to contest, a crowd and the backboard behind them.

Golden State is 0-3, and the third loss came with Stephen Curry, Draymond Green, Al Horford and Brandin Podziemski all in street clothes. That makes the record easy to explain and the explanation wrong. The two games the veterans played were the two the Warriors scored under 110 in. The night they sat was the night the club scored 122. The defense allowed 127, 111 and 131 and did not appear to notice who was on the floor.

Three games is three games. Here is what they held.

Jimmy Butler, Moses Moody and Kristaps Porzingis missed all three, and Porzingis remains out indefinitely. Everything in the table is ESPN's box score.

With them#

Curry played 21 minutes in the opener and 30 against Memphis, scored 23 and 24, and went 5 of 17 from three with 18 of 18 from the line. Anthony Slater of ESPN reported before the opener that the plan was somewhere near 28 to 32 minutes a night, and the 21 came in a game the Lakers led by as many as 35.

Green played 21 and 31. He had 14 assists in the two games and nine turnovers, four in the opener and five against Memphis. Horford played 17 and 19, which is where Steve Kerr said in October he wanted him, and made 1 of 6 shots. Podziemski's one game was 33 minutes, 18 points on 7 of 17.

Together, the two games the veterans played produced 41 percent shooting both nights and 22 of 77 from three. The Memphis game was the one the club should have had: Golden State led 106-94 with 3:47 left and did not make another field goal. The five on the floor for that lead were Curry, Podziemski, Green, Lendeborg and De'Anthony Melton, by ESPN's play-by-play, with Horford replacing Melton at 1:24. The Called Shot filed here on Thursday had Green playing both nights of the back-to-back. He sat the second with low back soreness, and the call is graded wrong.

Without them#

Saturday's five was Brandon Williams, Will Richard, Gui Santos, Lendeborg and Graham Ike, and it was the third different starting lineup in three games. The Warriors shot 45 percent and 17 of 39 from three. Lendeborg scored 26 with six threes, Melton 25 on 8 of 13 off the bench, Williams 20 with 8 of 11 free throws in a spot start. Charles Bassey, in his first game after a knee injury, made all four of his shots in 13 minutes with seven rebounds and two blocks.

And Phoenix scored 131. Devin Booker made 17 of 25 for 43 points, the Suns scored 45 in the third quarter and 27 on the break, and 60 in the paint. The Lakers had 66 in the paint on Wednesday with Curry, Green and Horford all playing. Across the three games opponents made 136 of 253 shots, 54 percent.

So the offense was lower with the veterans than without them and the defense was poor in both conditions. One game of each is not a finding. It is the reason the 0-3 cannot be charged to Saturday's rest.

The one constant#

Yaxel Lendeborg led Golden State in minutes all three nights: 29 against the Lakers, 37 against Memphis, 36 at Phoenix. That is 102 minutes in three games. Melton and Santos are next at 68 each. Lendeborg is the only Warrior who started all three, and the fives around him have changed every night.

The rookie's shooting followed the pattern: 1 of 4 and 1 of 3 from three with the veterans, 6 of 11 without. He has two technical fouls in three games, and Kerr said after the Memphis game that he would like to see him run the floor better, per the Associated Press.

Ike has started two of the three at center. He played 12 minutes on Friday and 26 on Saturday, with 10 rebounds in the second.

Monday at Denver#

The Warriors are in Denver on Monday at 7 p.m. Pacific, then at Minnesota on Wednesday and home to the Lakers on Friday. ESPN's injury notes dated October 25 list Santos questionable with left knee tendinitis after leaving Saturday's game, Williams probable with left lower back soreness and Bassey probable with right patellar tendinopathy. Curry, Podziemski, Green and Horford are not on the report, ESPN's note on Green says, and Joey Akeley of Sports Illustrated reported the same for all four. Denver lists Cameron Johnson and Alpha Diallo doubtful and Spencer Jones and Julian Strawther out, per Akeley.

Denver beat New Orleans 141-135 in overtime on Saturday with 42 from Jamal Murray. Golden State allowed 131, 129, 117 and 116 in its four games against the Nuggets last season, by ESPN's schedule.

The read: Golden State holds at least one of Denver, Minnesota and the Lakers under 110 points this week. Last season's Warriors held opponents under 110 in 24 of 82 games, and the only Denver game of the three carries a 122-a-night offense. If all three score 110 or more, it will mean the defense Phoenix shot 58 percent against is the defense, not the second night of a back-to-back.

Curry and Podziemski are not expected at Phoenix, a night after Ike started

Stephen Curry said 'Probably not, but I'll talk to the staff' when asked Friday night about playing at Phoenix on Saturday, per Kevin Topley of NBC Sports Bay Area, and Anthony Slater of ESPN reported that Curry is expected to rest and that Brandin Podziemski will miss the game with back soreness. Podziemski said he 'tweaked it a little bit, nothing too serious.' It is the second game of Golden State's first back-to-back, eight days after Steve Kerr said the club does not play Curry in back-to-backs. On Friday the Warriors started Graham Ike, a two-way center, against Memphis with Charles Bassey out with a knee injury; Ike scored 10 points in 12 minutes. Golden State led 106-94 with 3:47 left, did not make another field goal, and lost 111-108 to fall to 0-2. Jimmy Butler, Moses Moody and Kristaps Porzingis are also out.

Horford played both nights of no back-to-back last season, and Friday starts one

Golden State lost its opener 127-105 at the Lakers on October 21 and plays four games in six nights from Friday: Memphis at Chase Center on October 23, at Phoenix on October 24, at Denver on October 26 and at Minnesota on October 28. The first two are the season's first back-to-back. Kristaps Porzingis is not expected around the team in the immediate future, the club said Wednesday, and ESPN reported the Warriors are exploring trades for him. Charles Bassey did not play Wednesday with a knee injury. That left the center minutes to Draymond Green, 21, and Al Horford, 17, with two-way big man Graham Ike playing 12, while Walker Kessler scored 26 points on 12-of-12 shooting for Los Angeles. Across Golden State's 16 back-to-backs in 2025-26, by ESPN game logs, Green played both nights of eight, Stephen Curry both nights of five and Horford both nights of none. Golden State opened with all 15 standard roster spots filled, Brandon Williams among them, and sits $347,568 under the second-apron hard cap, by Spotrac.

Porzingis is out indefinitely, and Bassey started when Green and Horford sat

The Warriors announced Wednesday that Kristaps Porzingis, who missed training camp and the first five preseason games, met with general manager Mike Dunleavy and Dr. Rick Celebrini at the practice facility on Tuesday and will remain out indefinitely due to the same health-related matter, but will be around the team. The club said it will give an update on a potential resumption of practice, playing status or timeline when available and appropriate. ESPN's Anthony Slater reported he is not cleared to practice. With Green and Horford resting in Tuesday's preseason game against the Lakers in Las Vegas, Charles Bassey started at center beside Stephen Curry, Brandin Podziemski, Gui Santos and Yaxel Lendeborg and played 27 minutes with 12 rebounds, and Graham Ike played 12, in a 101-89 win. The season opens October 21 at the Lakers, with a back-to-back on October 23 and 24.

Podziemski played all 82 last season, and he will miss the first game of this one

The Golden State Warriors ruled guard Brandin Podziemski out of the season opener at the Los Angeles Lakers on Wednesday, October 21, with lower back soreness, Anthony Slater of ESPN reported Tuesday night. Podziemski sat out the previous three days of practice and had been listed as questionable. He played all 82 regular-season games in 2025-26, one of 18 players to do so per Slater, with 43 starts and a team-high 2,333 minutes, and entered the opener on a run of 96 consecutive regular-season games by Basketball Reference game logs. He agreed on October 10 to a five-year, $110 million extension that begins next season. Stephen Curry is listed as probable with right ankle soreness. Jimmy Butler and Moses Moody are out rehabbing knee injuries and Kristaps Porzingis is out indefinitely.

Kerr told fans to check the schedule before buying Curry tickets. Here it is.

Steve Kerr said after practice on Thursday, October 15, that the Warriors do not play Stephen Curry in back-to-backs and asked fans to be mindful of the schedule when buying tickets, per Monte Poole of NBC Sports Bay Area. The league has dated 80 of Golden State's 82 regular-season games, and those 80 include 15 back-to-backs by the schedules on ESPN and Basketball Reference, which agree date for date. Six end at Chase Center: Phoenix on November 2, Detroit on January 7, Charlotte on January 13, Milwaukee on January 22, Memphis on March 17 and Toronto on March 25. All six follow a home game the night before. Kerr announced a back-to-back limit for Curry once before, in January 2025. In 2025-26 the Warriors played 16 back-to-backs and Curry played both nights of five of them, the last on January 19 and 20.

Kerr wants Green or Horford out there as often as possible. Saturday it was 37 of 48

Steve Kerr said after Monday's practice that he is leaning toward starting Stephen Curry, Brandin Podziemski, Gui Santos, Yaxel Lendeborg and Draymond Green on October 21, with Al Horford off the bench, as reported by Dalton Johnson of NBC Sports Bay Area. His reason was Horford's minutes: about 20 a game is the limit, and he wants Green or Horford on the floor as often as possible to anchor the defense. Saturday against Sacramento was the only preseason game Horford has played as a reserve. By NBA.com's substitution log, Green or Horford was on the floor for 37:32 of 48 minutes, both for 6:10, and neither for 10:28, of which Charles Bassey covered the last 8:09. Horford averaged 21.6 minutes across 45 games last season by ESPN's game log, 20.0 across the first 30, and did not play both nights of any of Golden State's 16 back-to-backs. The second and third games of the season are a back-to-back. Kristaps Porzingis is expected at Chase Center on Tuesday to meet the performance staff, and Kerr could not say whether he will be available for the opener. Horford is not traveling to Tuesday's game in Las Vegas, which Kerr called planned maintenance.

On the record

Called Shots →
OpenAug 10, 2026

Golden State's apron-basis team salary is still above the first apron of $209,015,000 on opening night of the 2026-27 season.

This is the behavioural half of my own argument and it is the part that can be wrong. The legal analysis is not a prediction: while the Warriors sit at $216,439,590 in apron allocations, the mid-level, the bi-annual and the Jackson-Davis trade exception are all barred, and that follows from published rules rather than from my judgment. What is a judgment is that the club leaves it that way. NOTE REWRITTEN 2026-08-10 by Cam Ellis, claim and resolve_by unchanged: the original note named the routes out as Moses Moody's $12,500,000 or two of Al Horford, Yaxel Lendeborg, De'Anthony Melton and Brandin Podziemski, and that list was built off a roster read that omitted Kristaps Porzingis. Porzingis is on this roster at $20,000,000, his contract is inside the $216,439,590, and he is trade-eligible through the offseason because his June 30 extension does not exceed the extend-and-trade limits, so he is the largest movable route under the apron rather than an absent one. The list was also missing the calendar: Bassey, Draymond Green, Horford, Melton and Payton II cannot be traded until December 15, which is five of the thirteen standard contracts and two of the four mid-sized salaries the original note leaned on. So the call is now made against a wider set of legal routes than I first counted, which makes it a harder call rather than an easier one. I am still calling that Golden State does not pay a rotation player to unlock an exception that would immediately hard-cap it at the line it just crossed under. Scoreable against any published opening-night cap sheet on the apron basis, which is the basis that includes likely incentives. If they get under, I am wrong, and the whole piece was describing a temporary condition rather than the season's shape.

Al Horford passed his father's whole NBA career in his twelfth game

Tito Horford was drafted 39th by Milwaukee in 1988 and played 63 NBA games over three seasons for the Bucks and the Washington Bullets: 376 minutes, 93 points, no starts. His son Al, born in Puerto Plata in 1986 and sent to Michigan at 14, passed both totals within 22 days of his own debut for Atlanta in November 2007. Al played 141 playoff games before his first Finals game, at Golden State in June 2022, won a title with Boston in 2024 at 38, signed with the Warriors on October 1, 2025, and turned 40 in June. The Warriors open the 2026-27 season at the Lakers on October 21, a year to the day after his first game for them, in the same building.

The trend

Gui Santos has 11 of the 30 turnovers in Kerr's likely starting five

Steve Kerr made turnovers the subject of Monday's film session after counting about 90 through four preseason games; the box scores give 84. Through five games Golden State has 104, 20.8 a game, against 115 by its opponents. Last October the club had 110 in five exhibitions, then averaged 16.4 across its first five regular-season games and 15.7 across 82, team turnovers included, by ESPN's box scores. This fall the offense is new, which Kerr cited for holding off. Among the five Kerr is leaning toward for October 21, Gui Santos has 11 turnovers in 86 minutes across four games, after five in 71 minutes in last year's preseason and 1.5 a game last season. Podziemski has five, down from 14 last October, and Green three, down from 14. Kerr described Santos's place in that lineup as size and playmaking. Portland visits Chase Center on Friday for the last exhibition; Yaxel Lendeborg rolled his left ankle Tuesday and returned.

Podziemski got his $110 million, and Golden State kept most of next summer

Brandin Podziemski and the Golden State Warriors agreed on October 10 to a five-year, $110 million rookie-scale extension, his agent Bill Duffy told Shams Charania of ESPN. The deal is fully guaranteed, carries a trade kicker and ends in a 2031-32 mutual option that, per ESPN, either side can opt into but not out of. Podziemski makes $5.6 million this season and $18.9 million in 2027-28, with maximum 8 percent raises to a $25 million option year. ESPN reports that keeping the first-year salary low was a priority for the Warriors, because his projected cap hold next summer was about $17 million, so the extension costs about $1.9 million of 2027 room. Bobby Marks of ESPN says Golden State could still have $55 million to $60 million in space, counting a release of Kristaps Porzingis, who has $3 million of his $20 million 2027-28 salary guaranteed. Podziemski, 23 and the 19th pick in 2023, played all 82 games last season and starts at shooting guard next to Stephen Curry.

Golden State signs them quietly and waives them in public

Golden State waived Chance McMillian and Deivon Smith on September 16, Jacksen Moni on September 18 and Elias Ralph on September 19, all four recorded on the NBA's public transaction log. None of the six training camp contracts the club signed across the same four days appears on that log at all; the last Golden State signing it carries is Brandon Williams on August 26. McMillian and Smith were signed and waived on the same Wednesday, reported by Hoops Rumors and by Brady Klopfer at Golden State of Mind. Moni was signed on a Thursday and waived on a Friday. Ralph was waived to make room for Obi Agbim, per Hoops Rumors' reading of the league log. The mechanism is the Exhibit 10, a non-guaranteed camp deal carrying a bonus of up to about $91,000, by Hoops Rumors' accounting, if a waived player then spends at least 60 days with Santa Cruz. Training camp opens at BYU-Hawaii on September 29 and media day is September 28. One take filed, on whether the cutting is finished.

Every club is granted a non-taxpayer mid-level exception worth $15,044,000, and only clubs under the first apron may spend it. Miami sits $10,441,543 below the line, had $8,979,000 of the exception left after Tim Hardaway Jr., and signed Klay Thompson out of the remainder on Sunday night. Golden State sits $7,424,590 above the line, was limited to the smaller taxpayer portion, and put all $6,064,000 of that into De'Anthony Melton on July 31. What is left in the Warriors' hands is the veteran minimum at $2,449,421, less than half of the lowest reported figure for Thompson's first year.

Golden State's First 44 Games Paid Both Prices Of Curry's Own Bar, 39 Wins And 42

Stephen Curry set his own bar in April: keep the core together, stay alive, get a chance at a playoff series. Priced against five full seasons of Western Conference results, the cheap reading of that sentence costs a median of 39 wins and the expensive one costs 42. Golden State won 37. Its record before Butler's injury was a 47-win pace and its record after was a 26-win pace, and the published data cannot say which absence caused which.
