The comeback

The Lakers won the first quarter 38-15. The Warriors won the second 38-15.

No team in the shot-clock era had trailed by 23 or more after one quarter and been tied or better at halftime, the Associated Press reported; Golden State was tied at 53 and beat Los Angeles 112-95. Stephen Curry scored 31 and passed Dominique Wilkins for 18th on the NBA's career scoring list.

Every call on this site goes on a public ledger and gets graded. The misses stay up.
Stephen Curry, in the Warriors' blue road jersey with gold trim, rises for a jump shot at the top of the key as Washington's Marcin Gortat, in the Wizards' white home uniform, leaps with both arms up to contest, a crowd and the backboard behind them.

Luka Doncic made five 3-pointers in the first quarter on Friday night. He had 21 points on 12 shots. The Lakers led 38-15 after 12 minutes at Chase Center, and the Warriors had turned the ball over 10 times, the Associated Press counted.

That was the first quarter. The second quarter was the first quarter played back the other way.

Golden State 38, Los Angeles 15. Tied at 53.

By AP's account, nobody had done that. No team in the shot-clock era, regular season or playoffs, had been down 23 or more after one quarter and been even or ahead at the half. The Warriors then kept going and won 112-95. The 17-point margin is also the largest in the era for a team that trailed by 20 or more after one, AP reported.

The record it broke was theirs. On March 4, 1976, the Warriors trailed the Bulls 41-18 after the first quarter and won 124-110. That team was still down 63-50 at halftime, by Basketball Reference's line score. It needed three quarters to dig out. This one needed one.

The fourth quarter had its own line in the book#

Stephen Curry scored 31 points, with six assists and four rebounds. He made 8 of 14 from three. Somewhere in the fourth quarter, AP reported, he passed Dominique Wilkins and his 26,668 points for 18th on the NBA's career scoring list.

Curry came into the night with 26,643, by ESPN's career totals. He needed 26 to pass Wilkins. He got 31, and Basketball Reference now has him at 26,674.

Eighteenth is the NBA-only count. Basketball Reference's combined list also counts ABA points and has Curry 20th, behind Julius Erving and Dan Issel, but their NBA totals are 18,364 and 14,659. Either way, the next name above him is Oscar Robertson, at 26,710.

Thirty-six points. The Clippers are at Chase Center on Sunday.

Then Phoenix on Monday, which is the second night of a back-to-back. Curry sat the last one of those, at Phoenix on October 24, and Steve Kerr has said in public that the club does not play him on back-to-backs. So Sunday is the night to circle, and the one after it is a maybe.

Everybody else#

Brandin Podziemski scored 21, with six assists and five rebounds. De'Anthony Melton had 16 off the bench. Georges Niang scored 11 on 4-of-5 shooting, all three of his 3-point tries went in, and he finished plus-21, the best number on either side. Draymond Green scored two points, had nine assists and three steals, and was plus-17. That is a Draymond Green box score in the purest form it comes in.

As a team, Golden State made 22 of 46 threes. The Lakers made 11 of 39.

Doncic finished with 37. Subtract the first quarter and he scored 16 on 5-of-15 shooting the rest of the way, with one 3-pointer. He was given a technical foul with 21.8 seconds left in the third while the crowd chanted at him. Matisse Thybulle got one in the fourth. The Lakers scored 25 points off Golden State's 17 turnovers. Ten of those turnovers came in the first quarter.

The Warriors started the season 0-3, the first of those a 127-105 loss at the Lakers. They have won three straight since: 134-114 at Denver, 119-114 at Minnesota, and this. They are 3-3.

The read: Curry passes Hakeem Olajuwon's 26,946 career points before November ends. He needs 273. Golden State plays 14 times in November, by ESPN's schedule, and two of those are the second night of a back-to-back. Take those two away and it is 22.8 a game over the other 12. He is averaging 29.2 in his five games this season. What argues against it is the other number from last season: he played 43 of 82 games. Three missed nights would leave him needing better than 30 a game.

Clippers on Sunday, 5:30 p.m. Pacific.

Curry and Podziemski are not expected at Phoenix, a night after Ike started

Stephen Curry said 'Probably not, but I'll talk to the staff' when asked Friday night about playing at Phoenix on Saturday, per Kevin Topley of NBC Sports Bay Area, and Anthony Slater of ESPN reported that Curry is expected to rest and that Brandin Podziemski will miss the game with back soreness. Podziemski said he 'tweaked it a little bit, nothing too serious.' It is the second game of Golden State's first back-to-back, eight days after Steve Kerr said the club does not play Curry in back-to-backs. On Friday the Warriors started Graham Ike, a two-way center, against Memphis with Charles Bassey out with a knee injury; Ike scored 10 points in 12 minutes. Golden State led 106-94 with 3:47 left, did not make another field goal, and lost 111-108 to fall to 0-2. Jimmy Butler, Moses Moody and Kristaps Porzingis are also out.

Stephen Curry signs a one-year extension with the Warriors, not the reported two-year maximum and not a longer deal.

Directly against the reported expectation of a two-year max carrying him through his age-40 season. Term is the whole call: two years, three years, or no extension all make this wrong. It is also the most direct available answer to how much longer he intends to play, in his own hand.

Horford played both nights of no back-to-back last season, and Friday starts one

Golden State lost its opener 127-105 at the Lakers on October 21 and plays four games in six nights from Friday: Memphis at Chase Center on October 23, at Phoenix on October 24, at Denver on October 26 and at Minnesota on October 28. The first two are the season's first back-to-back. Kristaps Porzingis is not expected around the team in the immediate future, the club said Wednesday, and ESPN reported the Warriors are exploring trades for him. Charles Bassey did not play Wednesday with a knee injury. That left the center minutes to Draymond Green, 21, and Al Horford, 17, with two-way big man Graham Ike playing 12, while Walker Kessler scored 26 points on 12-of-12 shooting for Los Angeles. Across Golden State's 16 back-to-backs in 2025-26, by ESPN game logs, Green played both nights of eight, Stephen Curry both nights of five and Horford both nights of none. Golden State opened with all 15 standard roster spots filled, Brandon Williams among them, and sits $347,568 under the second-apron hard cap, by Spotrac.

Al Horford passed his father's whole NBA career in his twelfth game

Tito Horford was drafted 39th by Milwaukee in 1988 and played 63 NBA games over three seasons for the Bucks and the Washington Bullets: 376 minutes, 93 points, no starts. His son Al, born in Puerto Plata in 1986 and sent to Michigan at 14, passed both totals within 22 days of his own debut for Atlanta in November 2007. Al played 141 playoff games before his first Finals game, at Golden State in June 2022, won a title with Boston in 2024 at 38, signed with the Warriors on October 1, 2025, and turned 40 in June. The Warriors open the 2026-27 season at the Lakers on October 21, a year to the day after his first game for them, in the same building.

Podziemski played all 82 last season, and he will miss the first game of this one

The Golden State Warriors ruled guard Brandin Podziemski out of the season opener at the Los Angeles Lakers on Wednesday, October 21, with lower back soreness, Anthony Slater of ESPN reported Tuesday night. Podziemski sat out the previous three days of practice and had been listed as questionable. He played all 82 regular-season games in 2025-26, one of 18 players to do so per Slater, with 43 starts and a team-high 2,333 minutes, and entered the opener on a run of 96 consecutive regular-season games by Basketball Reference game logs. He agreed on October 10 to a five-year, $110 million extension that begins next season. Stephen Curry is listed as probable with right ankle soreness. Jimmy Butler and Moses Moody are out rehabbing knee injuries and Kristaps Porzingis is out indefinitely.

Porzingis is out indefinitely, and Bassey started when Green and Horford sat

The Warriors announced Wednesday that Kristaps Porzingis, who missed training camp and the first five preseason games, met with general manager Mike Dunleavy and Dr. Rick Celebrini at the practice facility on Tuesday and will remain out indefinitely due to the same health-related matter, but will be around the team. The club said it will give an update on a potential resumption of practice, playing status or timeline when available and appropriate. ESPN's Anthony Slater reported he is not cleared to practice. With Green and Horford resting in Tuesday's preseason game against the Lakers in Las Vegas, Charles Bassey started at center beside Stephen Curry, Brandin Podziemski, Gui Santos and Yaxel Lendeborg and played 27 minutes with 12 rebounds, and Graham Ike played 12, in a 101-89 win. The season opens October 21 at the Lakers, with a back-to-back on October 23 and 24.

Vogel gets the Warriors defense, and its shot blockers played 1,425 minutes

Golden State blocked 346 shots in 2025-26, 4.2 a game, 26th in the league, and pulled down 31.0 defensive rebounds a game, 25th. It also finished second in steals and sixth in turnovers forced. Three men who are still under contract blocked shots at better than 1.5 per 36 minutes last season: Charles Bassey at 2.52 on 100 minutes, Al Horford at 1.89, Kristaps Porzingis at 1.62. They played 1,425 of the team's 19,805 minutes, 7.2 percent, across 65 games. The next rate on the list is Draymond Green's 0.81. Quinten Post and Trayce Jackson-Davis, third and eighth on the team in blocks, are gone, and with the other departures go 75 of the 346 blocks and 578 of the 2,540 defensive rebounds. The three players added since are a rookie forward, a power forward and a guard. Frank Vogel was announced as associate head coach on September 17 and Steve Kerr says he is turning the defense over to him. Vogel's twelve seasons as a head coach produced three defenses that finished first in the league and two that finished third. Camp opens in Hawaii on September 29. Two takes filed.

Everyone Stephen Curry Named Is Still Here

At a Warriors practice in Los Angeles on April 14, Curry defined the phrase he had been using. It was not a win total or a round of the playoffs. It was four names and a request that they stay in the same building. One of the four has been gone since 2024. The other three signed contracts that end within a year of each other.
