Michigan gave the ball away 27 times in game one against the Lithuania senior national team, 19 of the 26 charged to individuals belonging to guards, and it lost a game it led by 14 largely on that count. The case for the call: this is a roster with two transfers and six newcomers playing its first games together, the guards who turned it over most are the guards who will play the most, and the third game is against a professional club rather than a national team, which does not make the pressure any lighter. What makes it losable rather than safe, and it is the ordinary outcome: teams clean this up fast. Going from 27 to 19 is a 30 percent improvement over four days, three days of which are practice, and a coach who watched Sunday will have spent all of them on it. I am calling that the giveaways are a property of this roster in August and not an opening-night nerve.

Costello took nine of Michigan's thirty three-point attempts in game one, off the bench, made five, led the team with 17 points and played the second-most minutes on the roster while recording no assists and no turnovers. That is a shooting specialist's usage pattern, and the question this call asks is whether it was the job or the night. The case for it: a coach who wants the floor spread around Elliot Cadeau needs somebody whose only instruction is to shoot, and Costello was given 27:45 to do exactly that. What makes it losable: nine attempts is one game, Trey McKenney took six and made three, the sample is three exhibitions in five days, and a freshman who shoots five-of-nine on Sunday can shoot two-of-eight on Thursday and see the leash shorten. Rotations in August are also deliberately unstable, which is the whole reason the games are being played.

For: the NCAA's September 9 opposition raises three New York obstacles his moving papers did not answer. Bounds v. Eastern College Athletic Conference, decided in Monroe County in 1972, held that an athlete derives no rights from an unincorporated association's constitution and bylaws because he is not a member of it, and the NCAA says Gayle's motion never cites it. Martin v. Curran is a standing New York bar on actions against unincorporated associations. And the relief he asks for is mandatory rather than preventive, which in New York raises his burden to extraordinary circumstances and a clear right to relief. The Tenth Circuit has also found a strong showing that the NCAA is likely to win on the merits of the underlying rule, which a state judge will read. AGAINST, and it is strong enough that this is priced at 60 percent rather than higher: Justice Sedita signed the September 2 order himself, so he has already read one round of these papers and sided with Gayle. State trial courts granted this relief repeatedly over the summer, including to roughly three dozen athletes in Louisiana and ten in Kentucky. Gayle has not filed his reply yet, due September 14, so I am pricing one side of a brief. And the freshest evidence for this call does not transfer: the Trotter denial on September 9 turned on West Virginia Code 55-8-12, which lets a third-party beneficiary sue only where a contract is made for its sole benefit, and New York has no such statute. Three things have to break the other way for this to be wrong: the Tenth Circuit has to leave Sweeney's injunction standing through the fall, the Exhibit 10 Gayle signed with Detroit has to not trip the NCAA's preserved bar on athletes who have signed professional contracts, and Gayle has to choose Ann Arbor over an NBA camp. Boynton has said publicly he wants him and Gayle has said publicly he wants back, so this call is against the stated intentions of both parties and loses loudly if it is wrong. Scoreable by a stranger with one page load.

Mike Boynton said on August 18 that the doctors' report he had received the prior week put Reed well ahead of a rehab schedule that had pointed at a late-December ramp-up, that Reed is expected to be cleared for live contact when Michigan returns from Europe on August 29, and that the opener is a real target. That is a full month of movement volunteered by the coach rather than extracted from him, and Michigan has an obvious incentive to have him: behind Moustapha Thiam and J.P. Estrella the frontcourt is freshmen. The case against is Reed's own record and is strong. He tore an ACL in December 2024 and his left Achilles against Drake in November 2025, and has appeared in 14 of the 64 games his team has played across those two seasons. August 29 to November 3 is nine weeks from first contact to a live game, and a program that has already watched this player lose two seasons has every reason to hold him out of one November game against Oakland to protect the other thirty. This is an availability call and not a performance call: one minute scores it.

The Tenth Circuit does not decide the merits of the NCAA's appeal in Wisne v. NCAA before Michigan's November 3 season opener, leaving the August 21 stay as the rule that governs who is eligible on opening night.

This is a call about a court's clock rather than about who deserves to win, and it is the load-bearing assumption under every roster sentence anyone writes about the class of 2022 this fall. The case for it: the Tenth Circuit expedited the STAY briefing, not the appeal, and having granted the stay it has removed the urgency that produces a fast merits ruling. Ten weeks from a stay order to a decided federal appeal would be quick. What makes it losable rather than safe: this court has already shown it will move fast on this case, it ordered expedited briefing once, the fall season is exactly the window in which the question stops being theoretical for hundreds of athletes, and a panel that has already read the merits briefing to rule on likelihood of success is further along than a cold panel would be. If it wants to decide this before the season, it can.

Costello came off the bench in Vilnius on August 23 and started in Utena on August 24, where he played 34:34 and took eleven of Michigan's forty-three three-point attempts. Two of the three men who produced Michigan's forty bench points in game one were promoted into the starting five for game two, and Costello is one of them. Against that: the Utena lineup was drawn from a box score listing ten players rather than twelve, so the promotion may be a function of who was available rather than a judgement about Costello, and November 3 is eleven weeks and a full roster away. Forty-five percent is a genuine coin-flip and it is meant to be. Filed at 45 percent confidence, which the writer calls a genuine coin flip.

Michigan took 105 of its 199 field-goal attempts from behind the arc across the three European tour games, 52.8 percent, and cleared this bar in two of the three: 30 threes against 35 twos in Vilnius, 43 against 33 in Utena, 32 against 26 in Igalo. So the tour says yes at roughly two-to-one. The reason this is still a live call rather than a formality is that the tour roster was short five men for most of it and an opener at home against Oakland is a different distribution of shots, with more of the rim available. I put it near 60 percent.

Estrella was charged with five fouls in Vilnius, one in Utena and five in Igalo, where he fouled out after sixteen minutes with sixteen points on seven-of-eleven shooting. Two of three tour games at five. This is deliberately the losable side: an opener at home against Oakland is softer opposition than three European professional sides, the whistle in college is not the FIBA whistle, and the honest read is that he draws fewer. I put it near 35 percent and I am filing it anyway, because the load he is carrying is the thing this beat has been writing about for two weeks and this is the cheapest test of whether the fouls travel with it.

Hartman started none of the three European tour games and played 21, 20 and 28 minutes in them, the 28 coming in the game Brandon McCoy Jr. left after one minute. He finished the tour with 69 minutes, the most of any Michigan player who did not start, and 9 assists against 7 turnovers. He is a 6-foot-6 guard from the same signing class as McCoy and was the highest-rated guard in it behind him. With McCoy's status unstated and Elliot Cadeau charged with 14 personal fouls in 62 tour minutes, the second guard spot is genuinely open. I put this near 35 to 40 percent, which is why it is worth filing: it is not a call I expect to win.

The against-half is real and I wrote it first: Michigan beat UConn 69-63 for the national championship five months earlier, and the two players who ran that game, Elliot Cadeau and Trey McKenney, are both back. The for-half is that Michigan's entire frontcourt went in the first round of the June draft, Brandon McCoy Jr. is out for the season, and this is the second game ever coached by Mike Boynton at Michigan, in a building 90 miles from Storrs. Priced at -150, which is 60 percent. The against half is worth roughly ten points on its own: a defending champion returning the backcourt that won the title game is not a 70 percent underdog to anybody, and it is the reason this is not shorter. What keeps it on the favourite side is the frontcourt and the venue, and the venue is the half that gets underrated, because a neutral floor in Boston against Connecticut is a neutral floor in name only.

NARROWED ON THE EDITOR'S OWN TERMS, 2026-09-13. The three-or-more version was bounced on 2026-09-12 because my honest price and hers were both shorter than the -200 floor, which means it was a fact with a date on it rather than a call. Her bounce said it files if it is narrowed to four or more. It is. THE ARITHMETIC, so the desk can price this blind against it: four of the twelve are Oakland, William & Mary, Detroit Mercy and Toledo, and losing any of those four is not the way this resolves. The other seven or eight are UConn, Marquette, Villanova away, three in the Players Era field and Louisville, played by a roster returning 25.8 percent of last season's minutes under a first-year head coach. Treat those as roughly coin flips and the mean is about three and a half losses, which is why three or more sat at 72 to 75 percent for both of us. Four or more, on the same model, is 52 percent. That is -108 and I have filed -110, the nearest standard price, and it is my actual belief rather than a floor. Does NOT restate my open wins-under-24 row: Michigan can lose four here and still reach 24 by running the Big Ten, or go 12-0 in non-conference and miss.

This takes the unpopular side and should lose loudly if it loses. Michigan is a defending national champion with a top recruiting class and it won 29 regular-season games last year, so 24 is five fewer than the program just managed. The case for the call is turnover rather than talent: this roster returns 25.8 percent of last season's minutes and 24.1 percent of its scoring, against the 38.7 percent the title team itself returned, and it has a first-year head coach installing a system whose three best executors were lottery picks in June. Note what this call does NOT claim: Boynton can miss this benchmark and still earn his second year by hitting two of the other three, and a Final Four satisfies the criteria outright. This is a call about a number in a contract, not a prediction that he is fired.

No Michigan player averages 2.0 or more blocked shots per game in the 2026-27 regular season, after Aday Mara averaged 2.6 in 2025-26.

This is a call about the one thing Michigan's championship defense had that is hardest to buy back. Mara blocked 2.6 a game in 23.4 minutes, roughly 4.0 per 36, which was the outlier on a team that finished first nationally in KenPom adjusted defensive efficiency. The call takes the side that says it does not come back in one summer, and it should lose loudly if it loses, because Moustapha Thiam is 7-2 and averaged exactly 2.6 himself as a freshman at UCF in 34 games. What makes it live rather than safe: Thiam's rate fell to 1.6 a game at Cincinnati last season, and if Michigan plays him the 27 minutes he has played at both previous stops, 2.0 is well within reach. J.P. Estrella (0.4 last season) and Jalen Reed (0.3 in six games) are not plausible routes to it. Scoreable by a stranger with one page load.

Michigan does not enter the 2027-28 season with Mike Boynton working the unextended second year of the two-year deal he signed on July 10, 2026. Either Michigan extends him or Michigan is hiring someone else.

Michigan announced on September 1 that McCoy tore the ACL in his right knee and will miss 2026-27, and said nothing about his eligibility, his surgery or his timetable. The default assumption is that a five-star freshman rehabs in Ann Arbor and plays there in 2027-28, and I am filing this because I think the default is closer to a coin flip than it looks. He signed in April for Dusty May, who left in June. The coach he would be returning to, Mike Boynton Jr., is himself working a two-year deal whose second season only exists if he hits two of four benchmarks in 2026-27, so a player rehabbing all year has no assurance about who is running the program when he is healthy. Set against that: he never played a college game for anyone else, Michigan is where the rehab happens, and every player who had committed to May stayed except L.J. Cason. I put this near 55 to 60 percent, which is why it is worth filing rather than assuming.
