Michigan's roster is full at fifteen, and the two guards it wants are outside it

Michigan signed Kenny Noland on Wednesday, August 19. The team flew to Lithuania on Thursday, August 20. On Friday, August 21, a three-judge panel of the Tenth Circuit voted 2-1 to stay the injunction that had given Noland a fifth season, and nothing since has given it back.

Michigan's official roster listed fifteen players on Saturday morning. Noland is not on it. Neither is Roddy Gayle Jr., who has held a court order since September 2 saying he may practice and compete.

Fifteen is not a preference. It is the roster limit in NCAA Bylaw 17.2. So the question on this beat is not whether Michigan wants either guard. It is where a sixteenth name would go.

The fifteen who flew and the fifteen on the page#

Michigan's cumulative statistics sheet from the European tour lists fifteen players. The roster published on Saturday lists fifteen players. They are the same fifteen men.

The tour was three games and 600 team minutes, against two Lithuanian national teams and a Serbian club. Eleven of the fifteen played. Four of them did not play a second: Ricky Liburd, Lincoln Cosby, Howard Eisley Jr. and Jalen Reed all sit on the sheet with zeros across the row.

Michigan carried four men to Europe who never got off the bench, listed all four, and still did not list Noland, who had signed the day before the plane left.

Gayle was there. UM Hoops reported on September 2 that he practiced with the team in Lithuania and Croatia and appeared on the scout team in video the program put out. He is not on the statistics sheet either, because the sheet counts who played.

Kenny Noland's name is not on Michigan's website anywhere a search will find it. A search of mgoblue.com for "Noland" returns about ten results. One is a sprinter, two are Vanderbilt baseball players, one is a swimmer, one is a lacrosse player. None of them is him.

What the stay did#

The Tenth Circuit did not rule that the 2022 high school class is ineligible. It froze a July 31 order from Judge Charlotte Sweeney that had made the class eligible while the appeal runs. The practical effect is narrow and it is total. An athlete from that class who has used four years is ineligible now unless he holds a court order of his own.

Gayle went and got one. He sued the NCAA in Niagara County Supreme Court on August 31, and Justice Frank A. Sedita III signed an order to show cause with a temporary restraining order on September 2. His complaint says Michigan has offered him a roster spot for this season, an opportunity it describes as conditioned solely on his NCAA eligibility.

Noland has no such order on any public record. In late August the Detroit News wrote that the stay had put his eligibility in question, and Sports Illustrated wrote on August 22 that he and Gayle would each need to go to court to get it back. One of them did.

The docket, read Saturday morning#

The Niagara County docket in Gayle's case carries 43 entries. The most recent is dated September 14, and it is an order admitting an out-of-state lawyer to the case.

There is no decision on the injunction motion. There is no notice moving the hearing. And there is no reply brief from Gayle's counsel, who has filed nothing since an acknowledgement of service on September 11, two days after the NCAA filed its memorandum of law in opposition.

A hearing was scheduled for Thursday at 2 p.m. A docket records filings, not what is said in a courtroom, so silence on it is not an outcome. What the silence does establish is that the September 2 restraining order has not been vacated, which means Gayle can still practice, and Michigan still has not listed him.

What Michigan is actually short of#

Fourteen Michigan players appeared in a game during the championship season. Four of them are on this roster: Elliot Cadeau, Trey McKenney, Oscar Goodman and Howard Eisley Jr. Those four played 2,068 of Michigan's 8,025 minutes, a little over a quarter of the season.

Gayle was sixth on that team in minutes with 823 across 39 games. Nimari Burnett played 792 and signed with the Raptors in June. L.J. Cason played 519 and left. Gayle is the one whose season is still being decided.

The passing is thinner than the minutes suggest. Cadeau had 234 assists, which is 234 of the 745 Michigan recorded all season. McKenney had 35 in 885 minutes. Eisley played 12 minutes in nine games last season. Brandon McCoy Jr., the freshman guard who led the tour in steals, tore his ACL and will miss the season. He is one of the fifteen. So one of the names holding a place on that page will not play a minute this year, and whether a player in that position can be moved off the limit is the only route to a sixteenth name that does not require somebody to leave. Michigan has not said whether it intends to use it.

Noland averaged 33.1 minutes a game at Columbia last season, which is more minutes per game than any Michigan player averaged in a championship year. He started all 28 games, scored 480 points, shot 37.5 percent from three on 192 attempts and 92.1 percent from the line on 76 attempts, and had 101 assists against 69 turnovers. Twenty-eight Ivy League games are not forty games against Michigan's schedule, and the rate is not the thing to carry across. The role is. He started every game Columbia played and brought the ball up on all of them.

That is the job Michigan has one healthy answer for.

The dates that are coming#

Michigan opens against Eastern Michigan in an exhibition on October 11. It opens the season against Oakland on November 2, which is also the last public snapshot before the roster limit binds for the year. Big Ten play starts on December 9 at Rutgers.

Between now and October 11 there are 22 days. The court has one motion in front of it. Michigan has fifteen names on a page. The guard it signed to back up Elliot Cadeau has been Michigan's for a month and has not appeared on that page once.
