Preseason

Kerr sat three starters at halftime and kept Yaxel Lendeborg on the floor

The five Steve Kerr named for the preseason opener played three minutes and 14 seconds together in Honolulu. The rookie in it played more than any other Warrior and was told afterward to be more aggressive. Kerr's stated doubt about the group on opening night is Al Horford's age and minutes.

Stephen Curry rises for a jump shot in Golden State's blue road uniform while Washington's Marcin Gortat reaches to contest it, in February 2017. Not a photograph from Sunday's game in Honolulu, where Curry played the first half only.

The five men Steve Kerr named to start the preseason played three minutes and 14 seconds together in Honolulu on Sunday. Kerr made his first substitution with 8:46 left in the first quarter, and the group did not share the floor again.

Stephen Curry, Brandin Podziemski, Yaxel Lendeborg, Draymond Green and Al Horford have no other game minutes as a unit. The Clippers won, 104-101, at the Stan Sheriff Center.

The box score says more about one of the five than about the group. Lendeborg, the rookie, played 18 minutes and 44 seconds, the most minutes of the 18 Warriors who appeared.

Three ways the job goes to somebody else#

Lendeborg is not in the lineup at the Lakers on October 21 if one of three things happens first. Sunday bears on each of them.

The men ahead of him come back. Jimmy Butler and Moses Moody did not play, and the NBA's box score lists both as out with an injury or illness. Dalton Johnson of NBC Sports Bay Area, who covered the game, wrote that Butler will be sidelined for at least a few more months as he recovers from a torn ACL.

Somebody already in camp takes it. Kerr brought every alternative off the bench. Curry, Green and Horford were done at halftime by plan, and the five who started the third quarter were Lendeborg, Podziemski, De'Anthony Melton, Gui Santos and Charles Bassey. Three starters were replaced. The rookie was not one of them.

Santos and Melton, either of whom could start in his place, joined him after halftime. Will Richard played 17 minutes and opened neither half.

Kerr decides he is not ready. Lendeborg made one of his six shots, a corner three for the game's first points. He finished with four points, a game-high nine rebounds, three assists and a block.

"Yaxel was good," Kerr said afterward, per Johnson. "We need him to be more aggressive."

Kerr singled out a play early in the third quarter. Lendeborg caught a pass over his defender in transition and tried to feed Bassey under the basket. Bassey lost the ball, and the Clippers made a three at the other end. "That's got to be a layup," Kerr said. Curry made the same point. He said the club does not "want anything passive" from the rookie, and that he hopes Lendeborg can thrive on being allowed to play through his mistakes.

Kerr's one complaint was about a shot Lendeborg did not take.

The condition Kerr attached#

Kerr announced the five after practice on Thursday, October 1, and put a limit on it in the same answer.

"The question will be, can we do that opening night given the age of Al and the minutes and all that stuff, who knows," he said, per Johnson. "But for now, that's how we'll start."

Horford is 40. Kerr said Saturday that Horford, Curry and Green would play the first half only, probably between 12 and 16 minutes each, and all three finished inside that range. If Horford is the one who comes out of the five on October 21, the vacancy is at center, where Bassey started the second half on Sunday. Kristaps Porzingis did not travel to Hawaii because of a health issue, Johnson reported, and the box score lists him as not with the team.

If rest is the worry, the opener is not half of a back-to-back. Golden State's first one is the second and third games of the season, Memphis at Chase Center on October 23 and Phoenix on the road on October 24.

What three minutes can carry#

Three minutes and 14 seconds out of 48 is a small sample, and "for now" was Kerr's own phrase. Five preseason games remain: the Lakers at Chase Center on Tuesday, Portland on the road on Wednesday, then Sacramento on October 10, the Lakers again on October 13 and Portland on October 16. Kerr has said some players will stay home from the Portland trip, so the five he starts on Tuesday is the next reading.

Kerr can still start Santos or Melton on opening night and give Lendeborg the same minutes off the bench. Sunday did not rule that out. It showed how he sorted the roster the first time he had to choose. Lendeborg started, he stayed on when three starters sat, and what Kerr wanted from him afterward was a layup he had passed up.

The call on this site since August 31 is that Lendeborg starts on October 21. It stands.

The Warriors have one center who shoots threes, one night at a time

Warriors general manager Mike Dunleavy said at media day on Monday, September 28, that Kristaps Porzingis is out indefinitely with a health issue the club learned of on Sunday, and that he will not travel to training camp at BYU-Hawaii. The club gave no timeline and did not describe the issue. Steve Kerr said the same day that Golden State is 'playing a more modern brand of basketball now, five-out.' Basketball Reference lists three centers on the roster. Porzingis took 74 threes in 356 minutes for Golden State last season; Al Horford took 205 in 969; Charles Bassey has taken 13 in 1,410 career minutes. Horford, 40, did not play on consecutive days last season: of Golden State's 16 back-to-backs he played one night 12 times and neither night four times, per his game logs at Basketball Reference and ESPN. Golden State's first back-to-back of 2026-27 is Memphis at Chase Center on October 23 and Phoenix on the road on October 24. Butler and Moody traveled to Hawaii with no return timeline.

The defense

Vogel gets the Warriors defense, and its shot blockers played 1,425 minutes

Golden State blocked 346 shots in 2025-26, 4.2 a game, 26th in the league, and pulled down 31.0 defensive rebounds a game, 25th. It also finished second in steals and sixth in turnovers forced. Three men who are still under contract blocked shots at better than 1.5 per 36 minutes last season: Charles Bassey at 2.52 on 100 minutes, Al Horford at 1.89, Kristaps Porzingis at 1.62. They played 1,425 of the team's 19,805 minutes, 7.2 percent, across 65 games. The next rate on the list is Draymond Green's 0.81. Quinten Post and Trayce Jackson-Davis, third and eighth on the team in blocks, are gone, and with the other departures go 75 of the 346 blocks and 578 of the 2,540 defensive rebounds. The three players added since are a rookie forward, a power forward and a guard. Frank Vogel was announced as associate head coach on September 17 and Steve Kerr says he is turning the defense over to him. Vogel's twelve seasons as a head coach produced three defenses that finished first in the league and two that finished third. Camp opens in Hawaii on September 29. Two takes filed.

Georges Niang's New Contract Protects The Warriors Against Georges Niang's Foot

Georges Niang's one-year minimum deal with Golden State is only partially guaranteed at $1,838,009 against a full-season salary of $3,876,529, and it carries Exhibit 3 language protecting the club if he has further trouble with the left foot that cost him all of 2025-26. Brandon Williams' deal is entirely non-guaranteed until he makes the opening-night roster. Charles Bassey's salary does not lock until January. Twelve of Golden State's standard contracts are fully guaranteed and three are not, which is the number that matters with training camp opening at BYU-Hawaii on September 29. Dalen Terry signed a non-guaranteed Exhibit 10 on August 28 and Alex Toohey agreed to one on September 9, both of them convertible to the third two-way spot the club has left open, and 2026 draft pick Lajae Jones is still unsigned. Two takes filed, on Jones and on whether Niang is still here in January.

Stephen Curry took nearly $21 million less and kept the 20th season for himself

Stephen Curry agreed on September 25 to a two-year, $116 million contract extension with the Golden State Warriors, first reported by Shams Charania of ESPN; the club announced the signing that night. Per Anthony Slater of ESPN, Curry's salary drops from $62.6 million this season to $55.7 million in 2027-28, then $60.2 million in 2028-29 on a player option. The maximum was two years and $136.7 million. ESPN reports the Warriors laid out several paths including waiting and a slight pay cut, and that the cut gives them about $10 million more projected cap space in the summer of 2027, when Jimmy Butler's and Draymond Green's contracts expire; Bobby Marks puts the space between $38 million and $55 million depending on Brandin Podziemski. The Associated Press notes 2028-29 would be Curry's 20th season, which would make him the fourth player to spend 20 or more with one franchise, after Dirk Nowitzki, Kobe Bryant and Udonis Haslem. One take filed, on Podziemski's October 19 extension deadline.

The Warriors Are Counting On The Three Men Who Played The Most Minutes On A 37-45 Team

Steve Kerr told the Tom Tolbert Show on Friday that Golden State tried to get younger this offseason and could not, that nothing offered to the club made sense to him, and that depth is now the answer. He said the back end of the roster, including the two-way players, has to hold the fort until Jimmy Butler and Moses Moody return in the second half. Golden State's published schedule lists 80 regular-season games with dates, and 47 of them fall before February. The men Kerr named already carried the largest share of last season's minutes: Brandin Podziemski led the team at 2,333, and Gui Santos and Will Richard were fourth and fifth. Stephen Curry was sixth and Butler eighth. That arrangement produced 37 wins and 45 losses. Butler turns 37 on September 14 and is listed OUT. Two takes filed, on minutes and on Richard's starts.

Stephen Curry Has Until June 30, 2027

Stephen Curry became eligible on August 29 to extend a contract that pays him $62,587,158 this season and makes him the highest-paid player in the league. The most he can add is two years and $136.7 million, because the NBA's Over-38 Rule will not let him be under contract for more than three. He spoke about it for the first time on Monday, at the seventh annual Workday Charity Classic at the Palo Alto Hills Golf & Country Club, and said the deal will happen at the right time. Anthony Slater reported on September 1 that the Warriors are not negotiating at all: they have laid out the one-year max, the two-year max and waiting, and told him to pick. The eligibility runs until his contract expires on June 30, 2027, and if he waits past that and reaches free agency he can sign for three years instead of two.

OpenAug 10, 2026

Golden State's apron-basis team salary is still above the first apron of $209,015,000 on opening night of the 2026-27 season.

This is the behavioural half of my own argument and it is the part that can be wrong. The legal analysis is not a prediction: while the Warriors sit at $216,439,590 in apron allocations, the mid-level, the bi-annual and the Jackson-Davis trade exception are all barred, and that follows from published rules rather than from my judgment. What is a judgment is that the club leaves it that way. NOTE REWRITTEN 2026-08-10 by Cam Ellis, claim and resolve_by unchanged: the original note named the routes out as Moses Moody's $12,500,000 or two of Al Horford, Yaxel Lendeborg, De'Anthony Melton and Brandin Podziemski, and that list was built off a roster read that omitted Kristaps Porzingis. Porzingis is on this roster at $20,000,000, his contract is inside the $216,439,590, and he is trade-eligible through the offseason because his June 30 extension does not exceed the extend-and-trade limits, so he is the largest movable route under the apron rather than an absent one. The list was also missing the calendar: Bassey, Draymond Green, Horford, Melton and Payton II cannot be traded until December 15, which is five of the thirteen standard contracts and two of the four mid-sized salaries the original note leaned on. So the call is now made against a wider set of legal routes than I first counted, which makes it a harder call rather than an easier one. I am still calling that Golden State does not pay a rotation player to unlock an exception that would immediately hard-cap it at the line it just crossed under. Scoreable against any published opening-night cap sheet on the apron basis, which is the basis that includes likely incentives. If they get under, I am wrong, and the whole piece was describing a temporary condition rather than the season's shape.

Golden State's last two-way job went to a man it did not draft

Golden State signed Graham Ike, undrafted out of Gonzaga in June, to a two-way contract on September 21, filling the last of the three two-way slots the club had carried open since the summer. Inside the same 24 hours, Lajae Jones, the guard Golden State took with the 54th pick of the 2026 draft and never signed, was announced by Pallacanestro Trieste of the Italian first division. Ike and Jones played the same nine games on the same Golden State summer roster: Ike averaged 10.0 points and 7.2 rebounds in 21.2 minutes, Jones 7.0 and 3.4 in 17.1. Two-way contracts are capped at three a team and pay $678,882 this season, and 79 of the league's 90 slots are now filled. The Warriors keep Jones's NBA rights while he plays abroad, which is the road Gui Santos took after Golden State drafted him 55th in 2022 and which ended with Santos starting 30 games last season. One take filed, on how much Ike plays.

Golden State signs them quietly and waives them in public

Golden State waived Chance McMillian and Deivon Smith on September 16, Jacksen Moni on September 18 and Elias Ralph on September 19, all four recorded on the NBA's public transaction log. None of the six training camp contracts the club signed across the same four days appears on that log at all; the last Golden State signing it carries is Brandon Williams on August 26. McMillian and Smith were signed and waived on the same Wednesday, reported by Hoops Rumors and by Brady Klopfer at Golden State of Mind. Moni was signed on a Thursday and waived on a Friday. Ralph was waived to make room for Obi Agbim, per Hoops Rumors' reading of the league log. The mechanism is the Exhibit 10, a non-guaranteed camp deal carrying a bonus of up to about $91,000, by Hoops Rumors' accounting, if a waived player then spends at least 60 days with Santa Cruz. Training camp opens at BYU-Hawaii on September 29 and media day is September 28. One take filed, on whether the cutting is finished.

Steve Kerr Floated A Starting Lineup With A Rookie At Small Forward

Steve Kerr told NBC Sports Bay Area on September 3 that he would not predict a record, and in the same conversation named the lineup question he has to answer in camp: Yaxel Lendeborg at small forward, Draymond Green at power forward, Kristaps Porzingis or Al Horford at center. Kerr also said out loud that he cannot count on his older players for 82 games. Those four played 171 of a possible 328 last season, when Golden State went 37-45. Jimmy Butler, who turns 37 on September 14, is not expected back until the second half; Moses Moody is not expected back until 2027. Two takes filed, on Lendeborg's minutes and on how many games the four veterans reach.

Georges Niang Missed All Of Last Season. The Warriors Just Gave Him Their Fifteenth Job.

Golden State agreed to terms with forward Georges Niang on Tuesday, one year at a reported $3.9 million, filling the fifteenth and final standard roster spot a day after agreeing with guard Brandon Williams. The club's own roster page carries both men. Niang has not appeared in an NBA game since April 11, 2025, when he played 16 minutes for Atlanta at Philadelphia; he missed all of 2025-26 after Utah diagnosed a fourth metatarsal stress reaction in his left foot on September 27, 2025, and was traded and waived while rehabbing. He has made 457 of 1,156 three-pointers in his career, 39.5 percent. Both new contracts are veteran minimums carrying a cap charge of $2,449,421 apiece. The two men will be paid $6,502,156 between them; the two charges total $4,898,842, against $5,246,410 of room under a second-apron hard cap of $221,686,000. Without the league's reimbursement of one-year minimum deals, the pair would not have fit. Once Spotrac posts both, Golden State projects to have $347,568 left. That margin is the reason a live August 6 call on this site's ledger said the club would stop at fourteen, and it is on course to be wrong. One take filed, on Niang's games played.
