Dahlien tore her ACL in a federation camp, and the November ledger kept moving
Maddie Dahlien, three caps and a SheBelieves Cup starter in March, is out for the season after an injury at the under-23 camp. Claire Hutton and Avery Patterson, both starters against Spain, missed their clubs' weekend as questionable. The quarterfinal that decides a World Cup place is November 27.

The United States finished with Spain at Subaru Park on October 13. By Sunday night the group Emma Hayes will pick from for the Concacaf W Championship had lost a forward for the season and picked up two question marks at positions she had just settled, and one of the three changes happened at her own federation's camp.
A forward out, in a federation camp#
Seattle Reign FC announced on October 17 that Maddie Dahlien is on the season-ending injury list with a torn anterior cruciate ligament, suffered, in the club's words, "while attending training camp with the U.S. U-23 Women's National Team." The release gives no date for the injury and none for surgery. Five days earlier she had started the under-23s' 5-0 win over the Dominican Republic in Fayetteville, Georgia, and come off in the 61st minute, by U.S. Soccer's match report.
Dahlien is 22 and has three caps. She debuted off the bench against Paraguay on January 24, came on again against Chile four days later, and made her first start against Argentina at the SheBelieves Cup on March 1, by the federation's lineup notes for that match. She was an unused substitute against Colombia on March 7 and has not been in a United States matchday squad since. The pool table had her 36th of 48 before the injury, four squads and one start in twelve months. For Seattle she had played 1,937 minutes across 25 appearances, with three goals and four assists, by the Reign's count, in a season in which the club has played 28 league matches.
So the November roster does not lose a player who was going to be on it. It loses one from the pathway Hayes has described as moving players between the under-23s and the senior team, in that pathway's own camp. A camp injury is an injury; nothing published by the Reign says more than that, and U.S. Soccer has published nothing on it.
Jeff Kassouf's USWNT Big Board for ESPN, published Tuesday morning, sorts 57 players into four tiers. Dahlien is not among them.
Two starters, two question marks#
The league's availability report, updated Sunday, lists Claire Hutton as questionable with a leg injury and Avery Patterson as questionable with a foot injury. Neither was in her club's squad that day: Hutton was not among Bay FC's 18 for the 2-2 draw with Portland, and Patterson was not among Houston's 20 for the 2-1 loss to Orlando, by ESPN's rosters. The report gives a body part and a status, never a diagnosis, and neither club has published a word about either injury that I could find.
Hutton played 85 of the 180 regulation minutes against Spain: the last 24 on October 10 after replacing Lindsey Heaps, and the first 61 on October 13 as a starter before Jaelin Howell replaced her. She has been in all 12 United States matchday squads of the last twelve months, with six starts, and has started 27 of Bay FC's 28 league matches, 2,412 of a possible 2,520 minutes. Kassouf's board lists her as a lock and, with Sam Coffey out injured, as the only other ball-winning defensive midfielder in the group.
Patterson played 45 of the 180: she started at left back on October 10 and came off at halftime for Gisele Thompson, and she was an unused substitute on October 13. She has been in every United States matchday squad since her first, on March 4, nine in a row, with four starts, and has started 25 of Houston's 28 league matches. Kassouf's board has her in the squad, not among the locks.
Both are questions, not absences. The league's next report, ahead of this weekend's matches, is the first place either status can move again.
The rest of the ledger#
Kate Wiesner, two January squads, has been on the league's season-ending list with an ankle injury since at least October 3; Emily Sonnett, Olivia Moultrie and Catarina Macario are on it with knee injuries. Naomi Girma and Coffey withdrew from the October roster hurt, and Kassouf reports neither was available for her club at the weekend.
The ledger moved the other way, too. Croix Bethune came on in the 65th minute for Kansas City on October 17, her first appearance in six weeks after a hip injury, by Kassouf. Trinity Byars, who did not dress for either Spain match, scored San Diego's second goal at North Carolina the same night, her 11th league goal of the season, by ESPN's count. Evelyn Shores, unused on October 13, crossed for Angel City's first goal at Denver. Jaedyn Shaw, who left the under-23 camp early, was an unused substitute for Gotham at Washington.
What the roster has to settle#
Hayes started a different left back in each Spain match; Thompson is nowhere on the league's report and Patterson is on it. Behind them the pool holds Shores, a fullback on the bubble by Kassouf's board, and Lilly Reale, who did not dress on October 13. In midfield, Hutton's leg is a question at the position thinnest without Coffey, and the player who replaced her on October 13, Howell, was making her first appearance in 316 days, by the federation.
I think Patterson is named for November. She has not missed a matchday squad since March, Hayes gave her the first start of the window, and Kassouf's board keeps her in the squad. The case against her is a foot that kept her out of a club match, a halftime substitution, an unused Tuesday, and Emily Sams, who started all 28 league matches for Angel City this season, was in seven of the twelve squads, and was not called for Brazil or for Spain.
The quarterfinal against El Salvador is November 27 in Mansfield, Texas, and the winner goes to Brazil, by the federation. No roster date has been published.
