Spain won 2-0, and the back four Hayes tried lasted one half
Fox, Davidson, Wesley and Patterson had never started together. Spain scored twice in the first 14 minutes, Patterson came off at halftime, and none of the five uncapped players in camp got on the field. Spain again on Tuesday is the last match before the World Cup qualifying tournament.

Spain needed three minutes. Laia Codina won the ball near midfield, Spain worked it up the right, and Edna Imade laid it off for Patri Guijarro, who hit it from outside the box into the side netting. In the 14th minute Salma Paralluelo cut toward the end line on Spain's left and crossed to the far post, and Eva Navarro met it first time. Spain won 2-0 at Audi Field in front of 19,220, a sellout, and did not put a shot on target after the first half.
The United States did nearly everything else. It had 13 shots and 10 on target, against Spain's six and three, by U.S. Soccer's match report. Adriana Nanclares saved Lily Yohannes's penalty in the 70th minute. Sophia Wilson had a goal ruled out for offside after a video review in the 53rd. Claudia Dickey did not face a shot in the second half.
"You can't afford to go 2-0 down against the best team in the world, especially the way we conceded those goals," Emma Hayes said afterward, as reported by Jeff Kassouf of ESPN.
The four who had not started together#
The way they conceded is the selection story. U.S. Soccer's lineup notes said Emily Fox, Tierna Davidson, Kennedy Wesley and Avery Patterson had never started a match together as a back four. They were standing in for a line that was not available. Naomi Girma and Emily Sonnett, one or both of whom started at center back in seven of the eight matches before this window, are both injured.
Kassouf wrote that the back line "collapsed" before Guijarro's goal and that Navarro scored as an unmarked runner. The federation's own recap has Paralluelo isolated against Davidson on the second. Fox told reporters, by Kassouf's account, that the defenders needed to react more quickly, get goal-side of attackers and close space instead of dropping too deep.
Gisele Thompson replaced Patterson, who started at left back by ESPN's lineup, at halftime. Neither the federation nor Hayes gave a reason in anything published after the match. It was Patterson's 10th start in 15 caps and her second in a row, after the 1-0 win over Brazil on June 9. Michelle Cooper, listed among the forwards on the federation's roster, came on for Fox in the 82nd minute and finished the match on the back line. By the end, Davidson and Wesley were the only two of the four still on the field.
Wesley's start was her sixth in eight caps. Tara Rudd, who started at center back against Argentina in March, and Kate Del Fava, called up in Girma's place, did not get on. Emily Sams, who started at center back against Japan in April, is not in camp, as Tuesday's piece set out.
Less experimentation, as promised#
Before the window, U.S. Soccer reported Hayes as saying that two matches meant less experimentation, and that Ashley Sanchez, Mallory Swanson and the uncapped players might play limited roles off the bench. Saturday went that way.
Hayes used 16 players: the eleven starters and five substitutes. Sanchez and Swanson came on together in the 66th minute, with Claire Hutton. It was Swanson's first appearance for the United States since the autumn of 2024 and Sanchez's first since October 30, 2024, against Argentina. In the 87th minute Swanson crossed to Sanchez on the left, and Sanchez could not put her sliding shot on target.
The five uncapped players on the 26-player roster did not play. Trinity Byars, Jordan Silkowitz and Evelyn Shores did not dress. Pietra Tordin and Del Fava were unused substitutes. The federation's match preview counted 32 debuts in Hayes's first 32 matches and none in the eight after that. Saturday made it nine.
That leaves one match for any of the five to play their way onto the next list. After Tuesday, the United States' next match is in the Concacaf W Championship, the qualifying tournament for the 2027 World Cup, against El Salvador on November 27 in Mansfield, Texas.
What Spain were missing#
Spain came without Aitana Bonmatí, Mariona Caldentey, Vicky López and goalkeeper Cata Coll, and lost forward Claudia Pina and center back Mapi León the night before the match, by the Spanish federation's notices. Guijarro, Alexia Putellas, Paralluelo and Navarro all started. A loss to this Spain is still a loss to the world champions, and it is not a measure against the side that won in 2023.
Hayes said she thinks the United States is "much closer to them than we were three years ago," and also: "I'm frustrated, I'm disappointed, but I'm not deterred." Kassouf reported that Hayes cited expected goals of 2.26 to 0.43 in the United States' favor, a figure from ESPN's research unit, not from the federation.
Tuesday#
The teams meet again at Subaru Park in Chester, Pennsylvania, at 7 p.m. Eastern on Tuesday. The last time Hayes played the same opponent twice in one window, in Brazil in June, she changed two of her back four between the matches, by ESPN's lineups. Gisele Thompson started at left back in the 2-1 loss on June 6, and Patterson replaced her for the 1-0 win on June 9. Wesley came in for Davidson at center back the same night.
Gisele Thompson has already played one half of this match in Patterson's place.
