Tim Ream retired, and the back line that started in St. Louis needed Richards

Tim Ream is done with the national team. He said so on the TNT broadcast before the United States played Chile in St. Louis on Tuesday, and he said age was "the biggest factor," as Jeff Carlisle of ESPN reported. He is 38. He made his debut against South Africa on November 17, 2010, and he finishes with 86 caps.

The federation's own pages call Tuesday a recognition of his career. They do not use the word retire. The retirement comes from Ream himself.

He is not done playing. Carlisle reports that he intends to stay at Charlotte FC, with no decision yet beyond this MLS season. Charlotte has started him in 20 of its 27 league matches this season, for 1,755 of a possible 2,430 minutes. His club is still picking him. He decided the national team was finished first.

The first hour without him#

The United States won 4-2 in front of 21,680 at Energizer Park. Pochettino made ten changes from the Peru eleven, with Gio Reyna the only holdover. The federation called it the youngest starting eleven of his tenure. Six players made their first start. Antonee Robinson captained the team for the first time, in his 60th cap.

The center backs were Neil Pierre and Miles Robinson. Frankie Westfield started at right back.

Sebastian Berhalter scored first, in the 37th minute, from Sergiño Dest. Chile equalized in first-half stoppage time through Diego Ulloa. Maximiliano Gutiérrez put Chile ahead in the 49th. Julian Hall equalized a few minutes later, his second goal in his first two caps.

Carlisle's ratings put the problem where the goals were. He gave Westfield a 4 and wrote that his failure to win a header let Gutiérrez run forward and score. He gave Pierre and Miles Robinson a 5 each. Pierre was "dominant in the air" and loose with his passing; Robinson had "some poor touches" that gave Chile chances. His summary of the night was that "the inexperience showed, especially in the back."

In the 63rd minute Pochettino sent on Chris Richards for Pierre and Auston Trusty for Miles Robinson. Alex Freeman had already replaced Westfield in the 62nd.

Chile did not score again. Richards scored the winner in the 72nd minute from a Berhalter assist, his fourth goal for the United States. Mathis Albert added the fourth in stoppage time from Trusty's knockdown. At 17 years and 131 days, the federation says, he is the youngest scorer in the program's history. Carlisle gave Richards an 8 and wrote that the defending "improved immensely" with him on. He gave Trusty a 6.

Four center backs, two matches#

Two friendlies do not tell you who is good. A 4-2 win over Chile is not a finding. The elevens are a finding, because they show what the staff is testing.

Against Peru on Saturday the federation started George Campbell and Trusty. Against Chile it started Pierre and Miles Robinson. That is four center backs in two starting elevens. Richards started neither match. He sat out Peru for what the federation called load management, and Chile was his first action of the window.

The club minutes explain why Richards is the fixed point. He has played all 450 league minutes of Crystal Palace's season, five starts in five matches. Trusty has 560 of a possible 630 at Celtic, with six starts in seven matches. Miles Robinson has started 19 of FC Cincinnati's 26 league matches, 1,480 of a possible 2,340 minutes. That is 63 percent, the lowest share of minutes among the three.

Pierre is the newest of them. Tuesday was his first senior start.

Mark McKenzie is the other name. He has played all 450 of Toulouse's league minutes, the same count as Richards, and he is not in this squad.

Ream's retirement does not open a place in this camp, because he was not in it. It changes the next one. Every squad from here to the next World Cup is picked without him, and the men who have started beside the empty place so far are the four from these two matches.

Ream had a view of the young players coming through. "They have a ridiculous amount of confidence, and it's refreshing," he said, per Carlisle. "They're still learning."

Who starts beside Richards on Saturday#

Mexico comes next, at State Farm Stadium in Glendale on October 3, four days after Chile. Then Canada in St. Paul on October 6.

My call is that Richards and Trusty start together against Mexico. They are the pair that closed out Chile, and between them they have started 11 of their clubs' 12 league matches this season.

The case against is Pochettino's own pattern in this window. He has not started the same center-back pair twice. He made ten changes between Peru and Chile. And Richards has already been held out of one match for load management, with Canada three days after Mexico. If the staff wants a second look at Miles Robinson or George Campbell, Saturday is when it gets one.

Whoever it is, Richards is no longer the question. Every other center back in camp is auditioning for the place beside him.
